Well.. yeah.

But more accurately, I CBF. Auto is like using "wizard" software or having your own roadie (which I wish I did).

This whole "Oh you have to drive manual because its "hip" and "cool" and your dumb if you cant." thing is f***ing stupid.

Yeah that's right 3dee

nearly all the drag cars are autos, cos they can't afford the downtime of a manual.

Changing a vehicle's gears manually using a clutch pedal and a gear stick in the modern age of computers and automation is a basic life skill? So you can't have life without manual automotive gearbox operational knowledge?

I seem to get by absolutely fine without the skill of driving a manual.

needing to drive a manual is a phase that has come and gone. the fact is that the vast majority of the cars on the road are automatic, and you'll spend 99% of your driving time driving your own vehicle anyway, of which most people who are going to buy a modern car are going to buy an auto anyway.
I like manuals. They're fun. Manuals have their place. Driving a manual is personal choice, and it's not stupid. But thinking that someone is somehow retarded for choosing not to learn how to drive one in this day and age is a stupid thought.

2 years of sitting in peak hour traffic on the Bruce/Gympie Road/Kelvin Grove Road/ICB/Gateway in a manual (V8 heavy clutch at that) made me realise how awesome it is now to have an auto.

I don't have a manual license either

I can drive a manual car no worries tho.. I drove one to work almost every day for a year (had learners and I was driving someone MOST of the time). I had to drive thru peak hour city traffic most of the time and it sucked balls; I'll never buy a manual car.

Well, not really Jimbo.

In true QGL tradition I'm overstating my point, but I really do think that everyone should know how to drive a manual icar. I don't personally give a s*** what people choose and think that declarations one way or the other are a bit silly.

There's no reason not to learn and every reason to have this simple skill.

FYI most cars in europe are manual (nothing beats a sweeping generalisation :p)

Auto's seem to be the 'non standard' however back home manual seem to be the 'non standard'. Almost all cars I've been in (including taxi's!!!) are manual, I am talking 95%+

Auto's are awesome for being lazy.

Manual's 'back in the day' were handier for more 'control' i.e. downgear to help with breaking etc etc however most modern cars have good brakes and abs and all that new shyte no need to downgear etc.

I still think it's kinda important to know how to drive a manual, but it's hardly a life or death issue... I would have thought most people would want to learn in case they are in a position of having to drive one at some stage...

I personally don't see why having to focus on changing gears makes driving any easier so I don't drive them.
After a short period of time if you still have to focus on changing gears in a manual, you shouldn't be driving.

Everyone to their own.

Personally I drive a bit of both and I find I become really lazy (notice the "i" not a generalisation about "everyone") and less aware of the road conditions etc when driving the auto but there are many factors which could include the difference in cars (auto hybrid honda civic vs manual straight cut dccd wrx) etc.

I prefer driving the manual but I guess only really cause I grew up driving them on the property.

the minority of auto drivers who are just so clueless that they can barely drive an auto are the ones who give auto drivers a bad wrap

Not being able to drive an auto well means you probably deserve the Darwin award.

I don't find that driving an auto makes me a lazy driver in that sense or an 'unalert' driver. I suppose it gives me more time to focus on my surroundings and whatnot, but then again, driving an auto makes driving pretty relaxed and easy, which is what I want driving to be. Even if manual driving was second nature to me, I still wouldn't want to do it in traffic.

But then again, driving is a subjective experience. Some find it easy, some find it fun, some find it a chore and some find it difficult.

Yeah I dont think its the act of driving a manual that makes you a better driver, its the fact that if you tried to learn a manual and it was too hard so you just got an auto only licence, then you probably lack skill in other driving areas, like being able to do multiple things at once etc.

Again I think there are way more factors than the transmission or how good a driver you are in a particular style of vehicle.

Try driving a 3 plate button clutch in traffic :) but then again cruising through the hills from personal experience we have found the auto's to chew the fuel quicker.

It is close minded to say one is better than the other cause it is situational. I guess the main advantage to getting a manual licence is you are not limiting yourself to what you can drive -eg- friends cars if you have to etc and they are manual even if you don't want one.

Well the thing is... With an auto I can do (if not legally) all kinds of other s*** like changing CDs, loading up maps on my phone, reading email, holding macca's coke and stuff. I do it in the safest possible way (which still doesn't make it legal), but its still win.

Its like having a dual core with one core doing jack all.

I took my test in an auto. I never even considered a manual. I'd never been in a manual car, or seen one, or know anything about them. They don't ask you at the place 'would you like a manual test?', they don't give you any pamphlet explaining what manual is. Nobody ever made that suggestion to me. I didn't even think about whether my car was auto or manual because the only kind of car I know is an auto.

Luckily the lady who prints the licence for you also does not ask "was the test manual/auto" because they gave me a licence that does not specify 'automatic' or anything like that. So I assume if I ever find a car from the 1930s without automatic I will be able to drive it.

Conversely at the toll booths they don't explain that 'manual' and 'automatic' does not refer to what kind of car you have. That is really f***ing confusing, as I pull up to the 'automatic' one with a note and they have a problem with that - but I do drive an automatic. Perhaps they should choose more appropriate terminology.

Pretty much.

It's not the fact that you're driving an auto or want to drive an auto that makes you a noob... its the auto license.

It's either.

A. Manual was too hard
= you fail, get off the road
B. You're just lazy
= s***ty attitude, get off the road

Everyone should get a manual license, regardless of what type of car you're going to drive.

Realy?, that was the least offensive way I could have said that. I still think its true though. If u just didnt even bother to try and get a manual licence then thats kinda different, you probably could drive a manual, its realy not that hard, but if u tried and tried and couldnt do it then in my opinion, chances are you are probably a bad driver, even in an auto.

So I assume if I ever find a car from the 1930s without automatic I will be able to drive it.

There realy are alot of manuals still around these days. Auto 4 cylinder cars are the worst thing ever, gutless pieces of crap, i'd never even consider getting a 4 cylinder auto.

Also, if I didnt have an manual licence I wouldnt have my current job, or wouldnt have gotten the company car, cause they are all manuals.

That being said, drumming doesn't automatically qualify someone as liking or easily picking up coordination of manual gears.

Like I said, I know how to work a manual gearbox (though I never got good at it), but I just didn't like it. I tend to like things to be easy and enjoyable regardless of whether I know how to execute a task, and driving auto is no exception. Its just... easy to drive an auto. There's no effort or chore-ness involved (such as heavy traffic).

I don't really care if that makes me lazy or whatever, because its my choice as a free-thinking human with my own personality to not bother with having the ability to use a manual gearbox. Its not a skill I've ever required. Drumming is not a skill I require, but it makes life easy and interesting and fun, so I pursue it.

I'm sure after two or three months of solid driving, I'd be fairly good at it, but I honestly have no reason to bother at this point since I rarely ever drive anyone else's car and don't have the desire to use a manual.

IMO its always a good idea to be able to have the option of driving a manual if you're required to.

Hypothetical: You go somewhere with a mate who drives a manual car, they get injured and you have to drive them to hospital. If you never learnt they are s*** out of luck or are going to have to deal with you kangaroo hopping the car down the road.

Oh but I'll just call an ambulance, still gonna take time for it to get there. If it was life or death that time may count.

Happened to me, out riding BMX with a mate, smashed my collarbone apart and he drove me to the hospital in my manual car, no problems cause he learnt to drive a manual.

That said I own an auto car. Why? Because manual cars f***ing suck in traffic.
My "fun" vehicles - motorcycles are manual, if I had a "fun" car it would also be manual.

Eh. Essentially its just a personal choice. Some people are really dumb drivers and can't even drive an auto properly, some don't like manual and just drive auto, some like manual but prefer auto, some like manual and some hate autos with a passion (as seen on this forum).

Its called free-will. I for one, have not at all been hindered by my choice to just go auto. Manual's pretty much don't apply to anything I do and so lacking that skill doesn't mean anything to me.

Driving an automatic is fine, but the co-ordination required to drive a manual car is seriously f***ing low and if you can't achieve that I definitely think you are wasting oxygen

dw 3dee, i think i'm the only one in this thread who's seen all sides of the story, ie had an auto only licence then a manual licence, and owned both manual and automatic cars.

and i will guarantee that manuals are hugely overrated and if you choose not to drive them you ain't missing out on too much.
