Topic: GTA IV on PC - massive video memory leak
bepatient

I picked up GTA IV for PC last night after putting it off due to endless complaints about instability and what not.

Now, when people say "it keeps crashing for me" " GENRALLY the people that say this have a old computer which barely runs as is and are attempting to play the "latest" games on it. No surprise why it doesn't work. So i normally buy it anyways and have yet to have an issue.

GTAIV i put off, and eventually picked it up last night and i have to say... DO NOT PAY MONEY FOR GTAIV (pc)

With in about 2 minutes of playing it crashes claiming I do not have enough video memory. (i have a 1GB 4870). Even on the lowest settings.

I tried every fix and applied every update known to man... and I am done with trying to fix this piece of ....
(just thought i'd spread the love)

bepatient,

generally most people don't have issues with games unless their underlying hardware or drivers are at fault. I'd suggest that perhaps one of your sticks of ram is faulty possibly, or you need to revise your motherboard or video drivers. I'd be surprised if the game was the issue and not the hardware.

^ i see what you mean. And i normally agree.

In the case of gta, it isn't my ram, it is actually my video Ram. But i have run a memtest just incase and passed overnight.

My graphics card runs fine with every other game (currently playin RA3, SF4, CRYSIS, FC2) -> but i updated my drivers just in case. Again no luck.

Do a quick google for memory leak gta iv, or somethin similar and you will see an endless amount of people faced with the same issues with various systems.

You seem fairly clued but just in case... Have you downloaded and installed the patches? :P http://www.ausgamers.com/files/browsegame/html/13/2506

Assuming that here you are talking about drivers and maybe not game patches.

I tried every fix and applied every update known to man...

Thought as much. Really though, its a fairly terrible game after the first 30mins. By the 30min mark you've played through every type of mission you will encounter. Has absolutely nothing on San Andreas.

apparently GTAIV running like s*** is 'working as intended' because its meant for 'next gen hardware'...

even though it looks like s*** at max settings and runs like s*** at min, regardless of hardware.

HTH. (it wont)

I must admit the hoops you have to jump through to install the game is ridiculous, but ever since I got into the game menu screen I've been hooked. I've finished it now (well, got to credits etc & currently 81% through entire game content) and I am only just starting to see the things they had to leave out of the game to ship on time (no semi trailers, Firetruck / Ambulance missions, & NOTHING to spend your money on when you complete story other than taxi rides, guns & hamburgers :( )

Im on vista with a GTX 285 so yea I've had no problems. It's sad to hear that there is a memory leak though as I think that anyone who has a fast PC should be playing this game, it's quite enjoyable & very funny.

Basically:
If you can play it, it's one of the best games :)
If you can't play it, its the most frustrating pieces of software :(

Hopefully the Lost & Damned DLC on Dec 3rd will contain patches also to solve all this. It would be annoying if they haven't sorted out there PC s*** before Ballad of Gay Tony arrives mid next year

/end rant (yes I have to much time on my hands)

This is a game I've been looking forward to for over a year, but now I might not get it because I am one that always gets stuck with something broken. It is unusual for me to be able to play a single player game from start to finish without it f***ing up and crashing my whole computer, or not being able to install it, or the disc somehow won't get read on my machine....

Oh & one more thing, make sure you've turned OFF Video Capture / Replay option if you haven't, as that takes alot of memory / pc power etc to run, as it's literally recording EVERYTHING in 100m radius for the replay

sadly you wont be able to press F2 to keep funny moments during the game, but you might be able to actually play the game :)

now ill STFU

you got further than I did before I realised that. Admittedly I'd spent the weeks prior to GTA4's release playing GTA San Andreas, which then left me with unrealistic expectations about GTA4, which I found to be a mere withered HUSK of a game in terms of play compared to GTA:SA.

Argh! so many mixed reviews. I really want to at least try it but i cant play for more than a minute without it dying.

It really annoys me because I am against game piracy and i purchase every single game i want. I feel like i really got screwed here, should've just downloaded it.

now to my new thread: Anyone want to buy a copy of GTA IV? lol

Well I "did" actually notice somethings during the story mode, but the internet appeared to have all these links to keep you entertained after the game story was complete (such as "real estate" links etc) so i didn't even bother using the laptop except for story missions) but yea, not to much in there.

I sort of feel like GTA IV is the "reset button" for GTA III, as San Andreus was definitely the pinnacle of their last gen engine. As that's definitely a better GTA "world" as it has alot more depth in its environments than just the city motif of Liberty City. & heck I was playing San Andreus well after the story mode was complete.

I remember spending around 40min to drive a 7-train-tow truck chain at the top of the canyon to "Scorpion-Whip" a lorry dumpster 30km. :)
Sad i know but I love doing stupid s*** in the world & it keeps me entertained

Infact Im gonna find that video now & uplodad it to youtube to make sense on what Im talking about.

hmm, I think 400ml red bull is to much for me in one day...

Runs pretty smoothly for extended periods of time on my laptop with 256MB video memory on lowest settings, but then I suppose I'm running the vastly superior in every way Windows Vista!!!!!! Zing!

The series peaked with Vice City. Only thing I liked about SA was that you could ride pushies. f*** YEAH!

there's a shock, someone who bought an ATi videocard is blaming the software instead of their POS hardware

bepatient, if you care to use the search function you'll find that quite a lot of peeps on this forum who've been in the business of building and fixing computers made for gaming have strongly suggested that users avoid ATi cards due to all the issues that can come with them.

Ouch, sounds like i got you a bit upset there. Just so you know I haven't had any other issue with this graphics card. In fact it has been my (multiple) NVIDIA cards that have died in the ass, thus my switch to ATi.

And your trusted "search function" is purely a collective matter of opinions, providing neither true or false facts to which cards are better. Not to mention the fact that every card changes, along with every opinion out there.

Oh and by the way, I have been building pc's for years now AND Ausgamers isn't my online resource for computer part reviews so no, i didn't use the search function.

After hearing how bad this game runs on high end PCs, I found it weird that it ran almost perfectly on normal settings for me on e8500, 8800gt and 4gb ram. Seems to be really hit and miss.

I stopped playing because it was too serious and the missions nowhere near as fun as the previous games.

Anyone else with a ATI card confirms this works without vram leak?

Nvidia if nothing else spends a lot more money on paying game makers to make their card the 'official' card for the game. Generally that means they work better.

To be fair when it comes to card quality I couldn't blame nvidia or ati, it'd be mostly blamed on the maker of the card. Unless you know, the actual GPU is dead.

I support nvidia because their drivers have generally been better, but occasionally ati come back with a better price/performance card by a bit.. but again it generally only takes nvidia a couple of months to rebadge another card to resell at similar price performance.

To be fair - ati has come a long way in the last few years. the radeon 9800 pro era was a bad time for ati really. It got a terrible reputation as so many sites said "this is the best card" and then 1/2 the people who had that card ran into issues in most of their games. I think that kind of stigma still exists to a large degree, warranted or not. That and the catalyst control centre is a resource hog and feels like a nanny who is difficult to fire at times.
