Following on from our interview with Cryptic Studios for Star Trek Online, we've prepared a full hands-on report after being given a handy media pass to the recent STO beta (which allowed us extra special access).

So if you're still not sure what to expect with the game, jump on in and read our full thoughts and impressions to see if you have what it takes to tackle the final frontier.

Been playing STO for a week now, mad Trek nerd that I am.

There's not a great deal of depth to this game. Scott Kurtz summed up the reason I'm playing better than I ever could.

It's fun though and if you're going to grind through an MMO, for me STO may as well be it. Less complicated than EVE and more lore references than you could throw Doctor McCoy at. Can't see non-Trekkers lasting the distance though, again the lack of depth will kill off any casual player base.

Instancing removes the kill stealing elements. The missions are stock standard "go here, kill these ships, report in" with some PvP, exploration and fleet events thrown in. Away missions make up about a quarter of the action but again, they don't vary from the tried and true MMO formula.

Can't comment on the endgame, however two of the guys in TOG have reached Admiral rank and I'm sure they're not the first. Oh and gold (credit?) farmers are already spamming inboxes and global chat. Some things never change :-)

I liked the ship combat, but the away mission stuff was horrible, pretty much killed the game for me and is what made me stop playing during the beta. I guess I'm also not really much of a trekkie either so at least 75% of the references were probably going over my head.

No talk of PvP? The game sounds interesting but if it doesn't have any decent PvP then I don't think non star trek people will enjoy it.
