CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson just finished his keynote presentation titled "Winning the War" here at GDC, providing an interesting overview to the companies history as they've developed one of the leading (and longest-lasting) MMOs, EVE Online.

The big news, however, is the announcement of a new game in the EVE universe - Dust 514. From the announcement slide presented:
DUST is a hybrid first person shooter (FPS) and real time strategy (RTS) experience set within the EVE universe.

The primary gameplay features brutal ground combat that takes place on the surface of planets, delivering the visceral, adrenaline-fueled experience of futuristic firefights.

Developed for the current generation of consoles, DUST will be equal parts battlefield reflexes and strategic planning, allowing commanders and ground infantry to work together, utilizing the real time configurable modular weapons and vehicles at their disposal to adapt to and control dynamic battlefield conditions.
The coolest part though is what Hilmar described as "Strategic Connection" - Dust 514 will actually interact with the rest of the EVE universe in EVE Online, and you'll be able to take part in battles as part of your Dust 514 experience that will have actual effects in the EVE Online MMO.

A brief trailer was shown, showing off a pretty cool FPS ground combat scene, after which the player jumped into some sort of aircraft to take off and watch a massive ship hovering over the surface of the planet get taken out in a super-impressive explosion by another ship. I'd be surprised if they didn't release the trailer officially soon, so stay tuned.

(I took a handful of truly atrocious photos of some of the video, which you can check out on our screenshots page, but I'd wait for the real ones before checking them out.)

While I think there should be a whole lot more melding of online games going on, I have to agree that it seems like a backwards decision not to offer PC support, where most of the present fan-base would be.

Strikes me odd that it wouldn't be on PC?

I highly welcome their move of integrating it into their MMO, there needs to be more of this.

Hilmar CEO of CCP has not discounted a PC version of DUST 514 at this stage, but the money in gaming is heading towards consoles, the exception seems to be MMO style games like Warcraft, EvE, etc.

From a gaming and expansion of the EvE universe POV this is staggering, a vision, if they can make it happen well...

I think it is a smart move. Funnily enough their current fan base plays MMO's, and not FPS's. I can't see a mad rush from the Eve community to suddenly start playing an FPS...
