Proving they're not to be outclassed in the CG video department, Blizzard have released the intro movie from the forthcoming World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King - perhaps a timely response to their competitors impressive trailer yesterday. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is due on PC November 3rd, 2008. |

Jesus no mate that was just a comment on wow as a whole. It's only an ex-pack and as such will do nothing to change the guts of the game reguardless of how many or how varied the new bells and whistles are. It'll still be a mind numbing grind based on pve content with a s***ty element of pvp which is balanced based on who cries the loudest on the forums each month.
Oh and btw, how are ya term it's been a while since I have spoken to you? last edited by Taipan at 11:18:57 22/Aug/08 |

I think the wow one was more appealing, however the war one looked cooler. I just don't think they can top the lore and crap they've built up around the wow universe, I mean there's probably stuff behind who and what was involved in the war trailer but from a casual gamers point of view it was more like this:
WAR - "Ok cool, goblins and ice mages and burning and castles, looks epic" WOW - "f*** yeah, arthas and northrend with dragons, do want" |

I just don't think they can top the lore and crap they've built up around the wow universe Just remember that the Warhammer lore is just over 20years old, etc. Also remember the opening trailer for WoW when it first came out was something similar - A NE running through a forest, a dwarf and a bear and an angry orc. |

I just don't think they can top the lore and crap they've built up around the wow universe Games workshop has literally published thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of articles, papers, journals, novels, source books and rule books on the world they created over the last 25 years. Hell, they have dedicated magazine(s) dedicated to exploring, visualising, and creating lore. After this expansion they have practically no lore to utilise they'll have to invent new lore. Considering that the essence of their game world is heavily based on Warhammer and every time they try and invent their own they do a "lasers pew pew pew" job of it I'm surprised that anybody could think that Blizzard can out lore GW/Mythic. Don't get me wrong, Blizzard have created some awesome story lines in the past, but you can't deny that GW haven't been doing the same, for much longer. |

I think the difference he's getting at is that warhammer is just some game along the concepts of a general idea of a world of which a butt load of stories have come from so you have no affiliation, as its the idea of a world rather than a specific set of characters or narrative. Wow, is in some respects the opposite, while we don't have an affinity for the idea of a world we do for the charactors and a set of specific events that unfold, or something I dunno, thats how I feel about it anyhow. |

As said in the other thread - I like the trailer, it's subtle and mature.. From recollection Diablo 2's intro was much along the same lines of setting the scene & didn't dabble in the eye-candy department (like the WoW & TBC ones did). the Warhammer intro was also kickass because, well, it was kickass & showed lots of fun eye candy.
As a side note - new WoTLK beta push went out today & with it a metric s***tonne of warrior love. MMO-Champion has all of it up for display along with the updated Talent calculators if you're so inclined to have a play with new builds... Now if only I could get a beta invite to have a play with it all :( ps. hi term! |

hi dj :) I've avoided even trying to get on the beta for this one, for wow me n jim were playing it for over half a year before it was released, having to grind upto 60 again sucked. Then in TBC I did exactly the same thing, leveled my mage to 70 then when the game was released I couldnt be arsed so everyone I knew was playing end content and sick of it by the time I could be bothered to ding 70:( Dunno what I'm going to do yet, maybe level the dk but stuffed if I'm going to do it in beta, which I would if I had access... |

Why dont you dual-box and start 2 new toons and get triple the xp with that recruit-a-friend thingy going at the moment. That's what I'm doing. Be easy to get up to lvl 70 in 3 months by the time Lich King comes out.

Warhammer intro pisses all over this, you'd think with blizz's massive budget they could've come up with something better... Where's the combat in it? |

Must admit that I'm in the same boat, mostly want to have a look around & play with the DK starting zone.. Levelling a warrior to 70 once, then doing it again when TBC launched did suck (especially since in beta, 69-70 required just over 1 million XP to do, come launch they'd cut that to around 600k xp or so)...

Its worth rolling a death knight just to do the starting area and the first few levels, even if you never level it all the way up. The starting area for the death knights is so f***ing cool and epic, anyone who even has a passing interest in wow owes it to themselves to at least play that much :P
Warhammer intro pisses all over this, you'd think with blizz's massive budget they could've come up with something better... Where's the combat in it? See original WoW trailer and TBC trailer for the combat bits. This time, its all about Arthas, hes who people are coming to see, hes the motherf***er to end all motherf***ers. |

I think they're going to have trouble topping Arthas, its like Typo said, they're running out of lore that people know after this expansion, they'll be inventing new stuff, and even if they have big bad guys to fight, it wont be big bad guys with as much of a fan following as someone like Arthas.

Sorry, I should have emphasised more, I mean specifically coming from myself as a casual computer gamers point of view, the wow cinematic is more appealing.
I know there must be more behind the war one, but I haven't spent hours bent over a table studying game rules or the warhammer universe because it just doesn't appeal to me at all. I'm not demeaning warhammer, I can definately see how it would be cool, and having known a few people who've played it, but judging by the average mmo player who make up a large part of the player base these games are trying to attract (ie, wow players or prospective wow players or people who at least know about wow), there's a higher chance that they'd at least know a tiny bit about warcraft as opposed to warhammer. I've played all the different versions of the warcraft rts, and I can actually see where that video is heading towards. Obviously I'm a little biased having played (and still log on every zg reset to 2 man thekal cuz I want my tiger damnit) they both are great cinematics and I definately will be checking war out. Speaking in exaggerated terms, it's like if they made a counter-strike/quake/whateverpopularfps mmo as opposed to a magic the gathering/more obscure lore filled game from a different gaming genre/whatever mmo. If they made cinematics, the CS one would appeal, even though appeal may not be the right word, maybe something along the lines of "more-known-by-and-probably-will-play-it" to a lot more people based around a fancy cgi short (they seem to be a dime a dozen these days). |

wow v4.
The demons have invaded Azeroth after one summoned by (reuse some character) broke loose. The old world as you know it is gone. (leveling 1-60 is gone too, new characters start at 55 or 60 in the new land/wotlk/outlands). The world is already created! rescale everything for 80-90 add 2 new hero classes. New quests through out Azeroth ... Heroic Wailing caverns! Lets new people join without doing content no one is using. Lets old people relive the original content. Yet what of pandaren! http://littlenorichan.250free.com/pandaren.jpg |

No way, the Warhammer cinematic was just another generic fantasy battle scene, nothing new or interesting. Seeing the new WoW intro actually had me really interested the whole way through. |

After this expansion they have practically no lore to utilise they'll have to invent new lore. They still have the emerald dream to do. That has been mentioned many times in warcraft 3, TFT and wow but nothing about it yet. THEN after that they should be made to create new lore. |

if arthas ends up just another farmable boss I am gonna be annoyed, oh yeah and can't wait to see dozens of people on the same server wielding frostmourne.... not. I really hope blizz don't do that. |

Funny you mention The Emerald Dream actually. It much like Outland, were both originally in vanilla WoW, but were removed prior to launch because Blizz felt both deserved better. If you've ever played around with WoW model/map viewers, you can actually find the original Outland (well, what became Hellfire peninsula anyway) map & an Emerald Dream map. if arthas ends up just another farmable boss I am gonna be annoyed, oh yeah and can't wait to see dozens of people on the same server wielding frostmourne.... not. I really hope blizz don't do that. All raid content ends up being farmable eventually. Except for Kel'Thuzad anyway, but that's because Naxx came way too close to the release of TBC and hardly any of the big guilds had downed him before it all became a moot point. Hence why Naxx has been relocated to Northrend as an entry-level lvl80 raid instance :) As for Frostmourne being wielded by every Legolololas huntard, I doubt it very much.. It'll be a legendary drop - I mean you don't exactly see Illidan's Warglaives around that often, so I'm sure it'll be getting special treatment. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if they decide to adhere to Warcraft Lore and make Frostmourne a quest item drop instead - I mean, it's a cursed sword so in theory whoever picks it up is going to end up as Arthas #2. The only solution would be making it a Death Knight only drop, but then you'll piss off all the Warriors & Paladins who could use it. nfi really. I'm just happy that Icecrown (like all the Northrend raids) will have a 10 man version so I actually get to run them :) |

Why? It's being moved to Northrend, re-jigged to a lvl80 raid. Nothing's being changed, beyond slight changes to the 4 horseman encounter to reflect the fact it's current state isn't feasible with a 25man raid.
It'll get significantly more usage this way, rather than being left as a legacy raid in Azeroth that people run when bored/drunk. |

DM beat me.
The Emerald Dream is the next expansion pack; or The Emerald Nightmare, what ever it is going to be called. After that my guess is they will start gearing up for the sequel to WoW. Don't ask me for a source but I'm sure I read in an interview not long before TBC was released, that they were only planning on three expansions before a new game. As for going up against someone bigger and badder than Arthus the Lich King. My guess it the final battle in The Emerald Dream will be a corrupted Ysera, the green dragon aspect. As for what could corrupt a dragon aspect... My next guess is an old god, and not a weakened half sealed up old god like C'thun. |

I think the point that many are making though term is that with the sheer weight of lore that warhammer has to offer, there is as much detail in their "general idea" to flesh out a specific set of characters and narrative. If i was a WFB fan rather than a W40K fan i'm absolutely certain i could wander to my room and come back with a short story about any of the Order rulers and some of the other special characters plus describe individual historical campaigns to much the same depth and detail as warcraft. (note that the orcs and chaos get a somewhat short end of a stick here in that i believe their faction leaders are Mythic productions rather than GW. The nature of being a disposable "bad guy" really) About the only real difference being they haven't been shown to us in technicolor 3d. |

Yeah, but your average warcraft or wow player who isn't knee deep in lore, probably doesn't know or give a s*** about sargeras. EVERYONE knows arthas, and knows the story of arthas and knows what a badass motherf***er he is. So even if theres someone bigger and badder than him later on, I doubt it'll have anywhere near the same impact.

I have never read a more nerdier thread in my entire life, this is bulls*** and embarrassinghaha, this made me laugh right out loud; its such a funny difference between the various types of gamer extremes and really highlights why publishers can just keep popping out stuff and we just keep lapping it up - there's the guys that just wanna play fun games so only buy good ones, and there's the guys that are addicted to the brands and will buy just about anything with the label of their favourite thing on it. |
