GS have a top article discussing the state of pro gaming here in Australia. Although personally I never got into the 'pro scene' as a competitor I have been following the 'esport debate' from a distance and seeing how it might develop. I'll always hold a soft spot for AusGamers for bringing me to the attention of lans such as Wonderlan and Zlan when I was in my early teens (jeez 10 years or so :S).

Anyway check out the article. Raises some interesting points.promoted forum item

Pro gaming is a good bit of fun for a while but the time investment you put in to what you get out is never favorable, even if you win every competition you enter. The problem with games is unlike football, boxing etc games aren't really enjoyed as a competitor sport. The only people interested in watching it are other players. So big events are always a bit of a charade.

The split between 1.6 and source ruined the competitive CS scene.

anyone who saw the carve up of quake players when Q2 came along knew it was a matter of time before that happened anyway, though I disagree with some points. Cheating killed CS imo:D

You wanna know whats stop the bad internet.

Telstra owns all the hard lined infrastructure and the Trojillo f***er took over from Ziggy.

Get another company like Verizon, Comcast or even Beijing Telecom to come in and lay Fiber Optics in EVERY city. Get them to run it. Telstra disappears out of the picture like free Jolt in the Shafted LAN Fridge.

Thats why LAN gaming is more popular in Australia than ever. Cause the internet is utter crap.

I've been to a handful of lans since QGL stopped. This one down the coast last year or the year before had an epic setup with 360's, a stage for main games, a shop with plenty of hardware and accessories but the place was only 1/4 full and everyone attending were only attending for the CS comp.

QGL pwnt everything because heaps of people just rocked up with plenty of games installed and plenty of hard drive space. Now with broadband the appeal isn't as great.

I'm pretty sure Telstra have already started doing that.

I think one of the big problems with competitive video gaming is that since the "game of choice" changes relatively frequently, you can't build up a proper fanbase.

Normal sports are rather fixed in their content, in terms of rules, tactics, equipment etc. The "popular" video game of choice, and the equipment used to play it change every few years at most. Which is why older games like CS and Starcraft are better suited for tournaments.

On the plus side, video games have visually improved to an extent that watching them as a spectator can actually be fairly engaging, such as a large scale battle in an RTS game, or a really intense firefight in a modern FPS.

CS killed lans (for me). Eventually that was all that was being played... and the game's not even that great.

i don't even know of major lans run around QLD anymore. are there any regularly held?

i'd actually like to see ausgamers run coverage on this type of stuff to be honest, it's always good to hear whats happening in international comps, even if it is war3 or starcraft.

Yes...

Well, thats not going to happen unfortunately.

You see, there is this thing called the National Broadband Network - its a Government policy from the last election. Its either going to be Telstra or Terria (Optus + 7 others) who roll out a network, and its only going to be FTTN.

Bad luck dude, you'll have to live with a 50 ping.

Chances are Rudd and his crew will be out before they ever make a single decision regarding it.

That'd be almost, but probably not quite, the stupidest most bass-ackward thing for these companies to do
