Topic: Firefox 3 Released - Download Day

Firefox 3 is now officially released and available for download from the Mozilla website. Ordinarilly, we'd be linking you to our local download mirror of the browser, but today is different. It's download day and they are trying to set a world record for the most downloads of a single product in a single day.
Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do to help us set the record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours is get Firefox 3 now – it’s that easy. We're not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.
Download day officially ends at 17:00 UTC on June 18, 2008 (3am June 19 Sydney time) so get cracking.

Update: now the download record is achieved we've got mirrors of the installers up now - Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.

Yeah it's a shame that some of the plugins don't work yet. Especially annoying that firebug hasn't got a release out yet.

Jadz0r, I've got firebug running. Think it's a beta ver though.

How do companies like mozilla that make free products make money?

Through donations and support from large companies. If you have some spare dollars, throw them mozilla's way!

Well you're doing it wrong, because Adblock has been working with FF3 for months.

In Firefox's case, Google pays them millions for having Google as the default search engine.

Ah s***...the auto-url thing is still s*** house....worst idea ever to do that :/

Example: Type "com" into the URL.. the piece of s*** goes looking through all of your favourites and any site you've been to recently with com in it and just lists them from the latest on I think.

Anyone know how to change this?

You can disable the awesomebar pretty easily IIRC, but all the comments I've seen show that once you get used to how it works, it is way way way better, so I'd encourage you to give it a go and learn how it works. At first it will no doubt be a change but from what I've read it is a big improvement.

Pretty much everything works, including all-in-one gestures, it's just that a lot of them aren't loaded because they're not officially supported in FF3. If you download the Nightly Tester Tools add-on, it'll make all of your out-of-date addons work again. Well, maybe not all of them, but in my case, all of them are working.

Only thing that doesn't work in all-in-one gestures (at least until they update it) is that the close gesture only closes tabs. It wont close the browser anymore.

oh yeh I forgot about that, ta.

That's OK, I only use 4 - scroll to top/bottom of page, and forward/back pages.

Browser.urlbar.matchBehavior

That's what I was after! w00t! Normal URL match behaviour returns :)
I'd encourage you to give it a go and learn how it works
I tried using it during the beta/rc's, but hated it and just found it s*** and stupid....

Type "com" or "www" into google and you'll see similar results.

The awesome bar is awesome .. can't imagine doing things any other way :)

Update: Looks like we're getting ahead of ourselves. Although a file titled, "Firefox 3.0" (without the RC# associated with previous release candidates) is active and available to download, it looks like it's just the RC3 installer placed in the final 3.0 folder.

this is actually incorrect. just out of interest i did an md5sum on the file that was there yesterday and the one being put out today and they are the same.

c971bb2273d24d62dd15dcdbd6030ea3 Firefox Setup 3.0.exe.yesterday

Seems like a load of crap just to make sure people re download it today.

i bought a shirt of them back when they had version 1. when people didn't know what firefox was. now if you wear it it is like wearing a big NERD sign over your head or worse, a shirt with an apple logo on it.

more like a load of crap so engadget can link whore like douchebags. That's the second lame thing they've done in like a week (optus iphone plans, whatever). Its sort of completely unsurprising that the RC3 version is the same as the final release, its just lame that in an attempt to link whore and possibly screw up the Mozilla attempt for the world record, they treated as this awesome breaking story.

Yeah, it took a while for me to get used to it in the beta. But now, I probably couldn't browse without it. Very nifty.

That's why it's called the awesome bar. It remembers all of the sites you visit and their titles and the tags assigned by you when you save them as a favourite and then you can type any of those words in the bar and it will start throwing up suggestions of what your are looking for.

The deeper the history your create the more awesome it becomes.... trust me.

I just realised when I upgraded it used the bookmarks.html from a completely different profile, wtf. Anyone else have a problem like that ?

edit: Oh, I had this exact problem. Followed manual restore steps and now it is fine.

Anyone else notice ff3 uses even more memory than ff2...also seems slightly sluggish when heavily multitasking.

yeh I agree, it seems about a billion times better. It's so awesome to get a software upgrade that really features some noticable differences for a change. Pretty stoked about the whole thing really.

Wow, now I'm starting to get used to the awesomebar, its f***ing awesome. I often go back to pages on old sites - for example, ausgamers files pages - and now I can just type like 'aus gran' and it'll take me to the AusGamers Granado Espada files page.

Need some more practice so I start doing it reflexively but it seems awesome.
