A demo of the home-grown Half-Life 2 modification Dystopia has been released! Download it locally from AusGamers. There are a bunch of servers up and running on GameArena and there will no doubt be more servers around during the day, some jump online to check it out.

Just finished having a lengthy bash at it.
There is only the one map, which makes it a bit easier to learn. Unfortunatly one map gets a bit boring after a while, 2 would have been great.
The models and textures are really good. The cyberspace stuff is fun, sorta feels a bit like cyberspace in System Shock.
There are a nice choice of weapons, differnt for each class and the implants give the game a nice twist.
Hopefully another map will be released shortly.

A person with a cyberdeck implant can hook into the terminals, 1 person per terminal. They then proceed to the data centers and open doors/take control of turrents. They can also put passwords and encrypt the terminals to slow down the other hacker if they arrive.
If your not sure what to do just stand in front of the screen while someone else is hacking and you can pick it up real quick.

Yeah the hacking bit is a bit strange, I'm not really into it. I'm more interested in racking up kills and securing stuff while the hacker gets abused for doing a crap job :)

An interesting game. Has a very Natural Selectionish feel to it, along with hints of Deus Ex, SS2, etc... I like the hacking stuff myself, I think its cool to have some sort of sub-game to break up the usual team dm affair.

Does anyone else experience an odd jerking every so often? Its not like lag and my FPS are fine but sometimes you get this elastic-band effect while walking.

Finally got decking fully sussed out, loads of fun as soon as you remember where the locations for the doors/turrets/coredefense. Its a bitch at first because people whinge if you are trying to learn how to do it but fun once you do.

The best thing is that they have implemented it in a usefull way. Most mods would have this as a gimick that might assist the team but in dystopia its IMPOSSIBLE to win unless the right objectives are hacked. Very cool. (as long as you have somone that knows what they are doing heh)

The best counter to a stealthed katana ninja is Heavy with thermal vision and a dirty great big fist... So much splattering :D

Actually, it's a lot like the RPG "Shadowrun" (originally from FASA, now owned by Wizkids and licensed out to Fantasy Productions). There's a few rumours saying FASA Interactive is making a Shadowrun FPS for the Xbox 360.

Actually it isnt all that much like Shadowrun, because it has no Elves, Dwarves and so on.
Shadowrun burrows alot of its terminoligy from various cyberpunk sources.
Words like Decker, cyberdeck and so on are used everywhere.
So there isnt all that much, if any, taken from shadowrun itself..

This man does not lie. The game is pretty much UNFUN until you learn how it all works.

If they bought out a decent shadowrun FPS on just about any system I'd probably pony up the cash for it. Of course, they'd better port it to PC.

Agreed, once i finally figured out my favourite weapon/class setup and how everything worked, it was a pretty fun game. Its better than your average action fps, you have objectives and the hacker has to help the team.

IT would make for an excellent matches between clans. The spider nades are awesome, i just sneak up, open the door throw 2 in and bam, garuteneed a kill or 2. I am pretty impressed with the game. Providing the iron out a few bugs, like some people can see the stelathys anyway because the cards are old c and cannot render the stealthed model.

It crashed twice on me today, i am hoping there just bugs there going to iron out. could have something to do with my card though.

It crashed twice on me on the first day I played it, hasnt crashed since.

I was playing a round or 4 where the defending team all camped the Spawn Room at stage 1. I was standing directly in front of the door button, bouncer stylz. Had to kill me before pushing it.
Our team just camped and camped, TAC'ed and camped and won the round. So very, very hard for public games to bust the uber heavy camped spawn room.
Clan matches would be much easier for that.

They did a couple of mistakes that really shouldnt have been made.

1. Spawning rooms can be blocked by one person if they stand in the door.
2. No auto team swap means team stacking occures alot, allthough the current
community climate evens it out pretty quickly, allthough not always.
3. Voice-command spamming, how many times must we hear 'I dont think so, sister' from the same person over and over..

4. Not really a flaw, just 1 map can get boring pretty quick. 2 would have been awsome. True it would probably be heaps harder to understand the game with 2 maps, as 1 map allows constant replaying to quickly learn it.

Those are about the only obvious flaws that I have noticed. The second may have a good reason for not having the auto team swap though.
That means these guys get massive props because of a good solid first release. I hope they continue to build on the game and fix those few problems.

Tollazor, you nailed it. My thoughts exactly.

Although i would like to add, apart from those flaws, the units seem pretty balanced to me, based on what you can and cannot use and carry. I saw the photo of the developers and im guessing the one girl would have put in the "I dont think so sister" line.

Just a quick question. Alot of discussion over wether or not its a free mod. At first i thought it was, then i went to website, under the FAQ they answered this question simply with "The demo is free". Which leads me to believe their going to release a full version for retail sale, assuming valves cut has already been organised?...will it be available for online purchase only or in retail stores? Someone clear this issue up for me.

i was playing on one of the internode servers, one of the devs happened to be playing there and i told him to charge for it so they can hoard some loot, they deserve it mean come on .. retail games these days dont give as much value as this would

(well it would probably have to sell cheap)
