The PSX is a high-end electronics device designed to run PS2 and PlayStation games, connect to broadband and record both DVDs and television. The unit is also be capable of receiving analogue television broadcasts to an included TV tuner. Hmmm now the Xbox isnt the only over-sized brick sitting under a TV.

It may be as big, but tivo like features and dvd burning are the only thing that's lacking from a modded xbox.

I guess SONY Electronics is winning the war against the movie business.

I can't wait for the next gen consoles.

What's everyone's problem with big things under the TV?

Wow my xbox is big. WTF is the problem with that? It's sitting in a huge cabinet under a large TV with big speakers to either side, and shelves full of dvds. What does it matter? I'm not planning on carrying with me when i go to the park.

it being big is only half the problem, it looks to me like this was a really big rush job, i think they just put all the parts together and hoped it would work!!

Anyone played Midtown Madness 3 on the Xbox ?? hang on or was that True Crime: Streets of LA ??

Either way there are civilians in the actual game that walk around for ages carrying big muthaplucking Xboxes.

Haha notice the strain on their backs :D

How was it rushed? They announced most of the features like six months ago (well the ones i consider important) and according to this article SONY usually holds its cards close to its chest, so that doesn't seem very rushed to me.

Well, it did and does work. No console is exactly Michelangelo, but why would you really give a damn? It's a console, not a modern sculpture.

I remember hearing Sony removed stuff like the DVD recording so they could get it to market quicker. Guess this wasn't true?

The article lists some of the things they left out (fast DVD ripping and mp3 support off top of head)

Also due to the orientation of the PSX controller ports, Playstation 2 Multitap units are not compatible therefore ruling out any 4-player action.

hahah $1300, it's just a pc.

Seriously, I want my console to play games and that's it, the only useful feature added was the HDD (mem cards blow).

Tivo style video recording would be awesome, but the problem is that TV blows anyway.

I was setting up Freevo on my linux machine when i realised i don't really want to watch McClouds Daughters or Gilmore Girls.

tivo's the s***. Try tivo.com

The head of the FCC in the US described it as "God's gift" when given one last christmas. Just reading descriptions about it and what not won't let you appreciate how cool it is, and from what i've read, the features most people end up buying it for are not the ones they grow to love.

Tivo actively embrasses the hacking community too, so there's lots of cool mods coming out for it all the time. Only problem is it doesn't look promising for Australia with them pulling out of the UK market despite a fanatical fan base.

Basically, it completely changes the way you watch tv. And if all you think when told that is 'tv sucks' then poor you.

Just to add to that, not only does it change the way you watch tv, but there's suggestions that by 2006 PVRs (led by Tivo) could have destroyed television as we know it. It's predicted that by 2006 tivo's/pvr's will have reached 15% market penetration in US homes, and the current advert based (and based on lies) model of TV will no longer be sustainable. Article.

Sounds intersting, apart from the fact that the website reads like one big infomercial.

ok by making it have more hdd space etc, aren't they just supporting piracy in a way? and isn't it going to be a loss in a way to them?

It's not a PC. It's a Playstation 2 (which already has PS1 compatibility), with a tvtuner card, harddisk to save captured TV to, and a DVD burner to burn captured TV on.

^^ ya i'll second that.

TV will still reek no matter what you do with it and which way you look at it. Console support was the best thing that happened to it so far.

Except now with the psx you'll be watching world idol, pop stars 2 and big brother 73634 all over and over again.

Piece of s*** shows... where's sideshow bob when you need him.
