News.com.au are reporting that everyone's favourite copyright violating software, Napster, will be charging a subscription fee by the middle of the year. Would you guys pay to use Napster? What if you were paying to use Napster, but the range of music was greatly reduced - ie, only bands that had 'signed on' with Napster were able to have their music distributed? |

If the music is limited to subscribed bands then they can f*** off. If they left it like it is but made us pay some it would be ok... sorta. Can't they just leave the f***ing thing alone. the industry isn't losing out - that has been proven. |

err, I beleive their hand has been forced. They have jumped into bed with the parent company of one of the majors, mainly to avoid more legal action. I dunno if I'd pay a subscription, if it was limited to commercial pop and sellouts like Metallica, then they can shove the subscription. If it stays the same, and the fee is reasonable, maybe, just maybe I'd pay. |

Geez aren't you smart. SIf it wasn't obvious to everyone. We all just wanted it to stay how it is. Lyco yeah thats what I said. If the fee is ok and it stays the way it is I will maybe pay. The other sharing programs suck ass.... |

IF we gotta pay for napster, it dun matter, cause in like 24 hrs of the notice there is a crack for it i bet. Just like any software that has a day limit set on it, someone has a crack for it. So napster will not get any money from us. Oh yer if napster does want us to pay i will post the crack. :D |

as far as im concerend were entering a age that makes music free. the ONLY way i see file sharing stoped is if the governments of the world go nazi on the the internet and constrict whats on the net and i dont see that happening there will be more progs just like napster and ppl wont have to pay for them (not realy anyway) it seems to me that software in general is free. when it gets too the point where you can rip off the world's richest man (gates) of his sofware that made him a fortune, realy who is going to stop you? |

OK, so the main Napster server becomes subscriber based, how the hell are they gonna do that to the 100 other Napster compatible servers which were set up for just such an eventuality. Some of them have as many ppl sharing thru them as the main server. AFAIK they aren't linked. For those who don't know, do a search on 'Napigator', and also have a look for 'filefunnel' whilst yer at it. |

Yeah Sub I was wondering about that. You reckon you will still be able to use napigator? If so then all is well. Psco that is a gay statement. If all music was free then there will cease to be music. How the f*** are musicians gonna live if they don't get payed at all? |

Napster management should move to south-east asia where copyright laws aren't enforced (or are there just no copyright laws altogether?). China doesn't have © laws does it? |

f*** off it was gay music basicly is free the only thing is there are ppl who dont know how to get at it musicans still make money becase of these ppl and also becase some ppl buy cd's even tho they can get at the mp3's the only ppl that would realy not have access to music are ppl who are living (for lack of a better word) very poor lives there are even free isp's now so your basicly looking at the price of a phonecall. realy if u have a computer and know what your doing you have acces to (what i'd wager) the largest music libary in the world |

Yeah and that is truly gay in some ways. Not everyone should have access to it. Musicians still need to make a good bit of money cos their career is always fairly short. Well their recording career anyway, there are very few artists that keep making and selling lots of records for many years. I like Napster cos it gives access to stuff that I would not be able to get unless I went overseas. But common s*** should not need to be downloaded. If you wanna listen to that before you buy it then go to a CD store. The stuff I get you can't find in CD stores/ |

Yeh Anarot... One thing I dont agree with though is your statement that not everyone should have access to Napster... Why should you, or me or anyone else for that matter have access to the service... but billy bloggs down the road isn't aloud to use it??? If its going to be available to people.. then it needs to be available to everyone (regardless of whether users have to pay or not) and not just some little computer geeks (not saying ur one, Just using it as a general term) that think they are more important than everyone else... I personally think that Mp3's downloaded should automatically delete themselves after 24 hours.. so that if the Little Jew listening to song likes it, then he gives due credit to the artist, when he buys the Cd or so forth Just my opinion though.... |

Saying anything else other than 'napster takes money out of artists and record companies pockets because people use it to steal music' is obviously wrong. The simple FACT is that if you use napster to get a song that you don't have, and then listen to it on your PC, you're not aquiring that song in the way you're supposed to - you are STEALING IT. Unless the artist in question has explicitly posted the things as a free download (as some cool artists do). I'm not saying I'm pure and innocent and have never used napster (because I have), but I try and make sure I have all the CDs of artists I like. In fact, quite a few of the CDs I've bought recently I've already had the mp3s, and the CDs themselves are still shrinkwrapped. I like the 24 hour deletion idea. Obviously some of the techniques they're trying to get working for digital audio security will have features like that in it (one would hope) - will be interesting to see how they accomplish it. |

heh, i think that .wma filetype that MS is trying to pimp has some security features like that. But then, thats the reason its not going to take off, MP3 is the same quality and size, and its widely used and accepted. Hell, I bought a vinyl of an AFI album I allready had in MP3. I bought an at the drive-in album last week that I'd had in MP3 for a month before it was released, but the fact is I have alot that I dont own the albums. There are heaps of artists that I would have never gotten into liking if I didnt have the MP3's. I went to see No Use For A Name last year because I liked the MP3's Id downloaded (hadnt heard them anywhere else), bought some of thier cds too. Its not all bad, the reason they have to take action is the Recording Industry thinks they arent getting phat enough, simple as that. |

I can see this is prolly the future of online music but if I can't get what I want I won't bother paying for a limited coice of bands. |

Yeah trog you are totally correct. But my point was that I generally always use napster to get stuff that isn't available in shops, often not even releaed in Australia. If I could buy the Cd's I sure would, but I can't. I'm sure these bands would like to be able to market to AUstralia, but they need people to hear them here first. SO in a way I am "kinda" helping them. I own tonnes of CDs, cos I love the feeling of actually owning the album, and the fact that it is much better quality. |
