In case you missed it, the Golden Globe awards were on last night. Amongst the winners were Gladiator for best film, Tom Hanks won best actor for his performance in Cast Away, and Julia Roberts won best Actress for her role as Erin Brockovich. Amongst some of the other winners were Ang Lee for best director (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Stephen Gaghan for best screenplay (Traffic), George Clooney as best comedy actor (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), and Renee Zellweger for best comedy actress (Nurse Betty). While filming Cast Away, Tom Hanks came close to death. Hanks cut his leg while filming the movie in Fiji, and underestimated the severity of the infection that followed. Hanks said: "Something got in there and, boy, was my leg hurting. The weekend we were home it swelled up really big so I finally went to the doctor and it turned out I had a staph infection that was close to giving me blood poisoning. The doctor said to me, 'You idiot, you could have died from this thing.' They literally had to take a big chunk of the stuff in my leg."

Movie maker Guy Ritchie and his cast were thrilled when Brad Pitt signed to star in Snatch. Ritchie says: "I play cards and the rest of the cast and crew play cards, and the reason why we were all so excited about having Brad Pitt along is because the rest of the cast have no money and he earns $20 million a movie. But Brad came along and cleaned everyone out. He plays everything. He has the greatest repertoire of gambling card games I've ever come across. I lost."
