Topic: Are ProGamers Celebrities?

Well, we sure had an interesting discussion tonight on the #ausgamers IRC channel. Python (I'm sure you recognise the name, Australia's best Q3 player, etc, etc) was being questioned by someone about why he didn't talk to him during a game on a Rocket Arena server somewhere. I started sticking up for Python, as did a few others, following the basic principle that celebrities don't like having to talk to absolutely everyone that continually tries to talk to them.

What followed then was a pretty lengthy discussion regarding whether or not pro-gamers were in fact worthy of the label 'celebrity'. My opinion was basically that they're the most well-known players in a fairly large (and rapidly growing) field of competition, and that like it or not (I'm sure they probably don't like it) that basically accords them with a fame of some type. Some comparisons were made to contemporary sports stars, with alternating views.

If you're interested, you can check out my quick summary of the events in the channel - worth a read to see the differing thoughts people have on this subject (disclaimer: this contains some naughty language - don't read it if you're offended). What's everyone else think?

I dont know about others, but pythons got to be pretty good to get to where he is

hes well known and respected, so that kind of makes him a celeb, because i know of him more than anyone else in q3

a legit phirst post.

The point is, even if python is a celebrity there is always the issue of player etiquette. Even if he didn't want to chat he can simply say "please don't ask any question's im not in the mood" and most of the ra3 community would probably understand seeing he does play professionally and would probably be asked the same questions constantly when playing on public servers.

I raised that point with Trog, which basically reflects around the idea that if Pyth was to be something of a rolemodel for Q3 and professional gaming then the way in which he conducts himself in the public will reflect upon CPL and pro-gaming as a whole.

i don't think they are celebrity's they don't get extensive TV cover etc. and they don't have press following them around every where

Its kind of weird, cos if you consider a 'celebrity' in any other sport (if we assume for now that pro-gaming is a sport) rarely plays alongside the largely untalented public. And when they do, they aren't trying to practice.

Australian 'pro-gamers' are stuck in a position where there really isn't a large amount of gamers who can compete at the level required. to keep their skills up, they have to play online. Compare this to traditional sport, where you basically just train with your team mates and occasionally play other teams in 'friendly' matches, and you can see that 'pro-gamers' rely heavily on public servers to practice on.

I think its silly to expect Python to answer every stupid question someone asks online. I think not saying anything is a fair enough thing to do - servers are for playing on, not chatting. (insert P-A image here)

i reckon there are different types of gaming celebrities. there are the ones that are in news headlines for winning best in the world s***, then there are gaming celebrities that the average player knows. like a player that has been around for f***en ages and had a large profile within the gaming community. like trog, strex, boba etc.

I am a celebrity in the porn industry though.

Python keeps getting asked what all his settings are, thats gotta be f***in annoying... who cares whether he uses inverted mouse?? changing your config to his isnt gunna make anyone a better player.. i dont think he really has to answer that type of s***

if u want python's attention though, pretend your a chick on put some (.Y.) after your name :)

firstly, whoever said that you had to have reporters flocking and your face on tv to be a celebrity .. you dont.

what about famous authors? how many of thier fans have seen thier face?

allthough is there really a distinction being celebrity and 'reknowned social figure'? or do they mean the same thing. i.e: is there some arbitrary number of people that need to know who you are before you are classed as a celebrity?

Or is it just within a universe of discourse however it may be taken? Fatality is a celebrity among quakers but he's just some little gimp kid that one a bit of money playing games to anyone else.

And whoever said that (trog, strex, boba) were celebs? they arent really world reknowned? trog nationally perhaps, but only by a small group of games. There has to be a line drawn somewhere? Hell, a f***load of people know my nick but i wouldnt for one second consider that grounds for 'celebrity' status not even within this small community.
To me the word seems alot more large scale and global. I also think that calling Pyth a celebrity is pushing the idea a bit, as 'the nickname' might be known to a heap of overseas players, but really put that in percentage reflecting the numbers of the whole world. Compare that to the ammount of people that now the name and face 'Madonna' and its a joke.

Confused? I know I am

well, for me (and this is back on the subject of gamings celebrities), after i went to DeePers LAN, i couldn't believe my eyes. (genocide will be able to back me up :D), when i met, deeps, geno, some_nob etc, i was like "WoW! these guys have killed me sooo many times". Its almost like they sorta hang out in their own little community or something

s***, ando is very lucky he wasn't in one of the channels I moderate.. he would have his arse banned, one for consently arguing with trog, and.. harrasing Python.

Reading that Im kinda glad Im not a celeb or something.. That kinda s*** would drive me insane.

Who cares if Pyth is a pro gamer ... That doesn't give him uber rights.

However to squirt out a blubbering cry on how much it sucks that someone won't talk to them on RA3 is a bit much. Hell I ignore most of the comments on games, quite often even if im not actualy playing in the round.
Not because I think I am better than anyone else (well I do, but that isn't the reason I don't talk often) but because its game playing time, not chat time. You want to chat go to irc you want to play stay right here.

acidreign: i said it cos i was saying that python is known by the same number of people as what trog, term and nathan are.

think about it.

python's really only known in australia for his quake skill, cos as of this far he hasn't won a big american tournament that would get him on the gamers in america's minds

who are you kidding, there's thousands of international quakers that would recognise the name.

sif python is a celebrity

if quake can be considered a sport than it'd be in the same category as skateboarding and bmx shiznits and being the best in a country in those sports doesn't make you a celebrity.

you dont have to be world wide known to be a celebrity, a person can be a celeb in their own country or city, or even town.

And python does have uber rights, just like you do Typo, you can make the choice to chat to someone when your playing a fast packed game or not to....the fact is he is a damn great player, and deserves the 'celeb' image. I mean, you dont hear him be egotistical about it do you? he just does what he does best, play q3, and yes, if you wanna chat to him, do it in irc.

People also might think just because someone is of a quiet nature that they are snobby, well just ask anyone in #ausgamers and im sure they wouldnt think of pyth like that.

Famous Skateboarding Proffessional - particuarly on vert ramp. Also makes his own decks and other accessories for the industry.

Oh, any of you Quake players heard of a guy called caulfield? He pioneered a lot of trick jumps in Quake2 and used to write for PC Powerplay magazine. Would you consider him to be a celebrity? He's interviewed such people as Paul Steed and Tim Willits, as well as the creators of TF2. Powerplay is a worldwide distributed mag (tho mainly only Aus and NZ).

to be a celebrity you'd have to be recognised by people other than gamers

and that hasn't happened to python or even the worlds best quakers yet
