Who is going to see it ?
Any plans for a combined QGL'er session ? :) I'm really looking forward to it. On another note - Tom Clancey's latest book 'Red Rabbit' has hit the stores (cheapest I have seen it is $22 from Big W @ Garden City). |

i'm thinking of seeing it, but i dunno. it looks good as a movie, but they're fully butchered the book, which was awesome. for starters, jack ryan wasn't new to the CIA, he was the deputy director (but really ran it, his boss was retarded) and it wasn't neo nazi's, it was arab (understandable they'd change that fact though) and it was at the superbowl in Denver, not wherever they said.....but other than that, it looks decent. :P

Baltimore I think they blow up, where as in the book the nuke turns out to be a dud and just kills everyone in the stadium from radiation. Tom Clancy novels have always been butchered, specially Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games, and to a lesser extent Hunt for the Red October. I was always disappointed they never did a movie on the Cardinal of the Kremlin, but I'm looking forward to Sum of All Fears, cause quite frankly the book was boring as s***, and the movie can only improve on it.

Not me - this looks like the WORST MOVIE EVER MADE and sucks even more because they're taking what is an awesome Tom Clancy book (out of the range of increasingly worse books that he's writing) and just making it into a stupid Hollywood cash in. Also, Ben Affleck? HELLO!? Remember what happened to Batman when they took Michael Keaton out?! Any series where there are 2 or more actors playing the same characters always end up sucking, because they're almost always lame cash ins. 3 actors is just ridiculous - this is the 3rd Jack Ryan and replacing Harrison Ford is just a dumb idea. It makes me mad!

the bomb wasn't a dud, it was a fizzle. so it achieved nuclear detonation, but only to 15 kilotons, instead of achieving second stage ignition which would have boosted the nominal yield to 400-500 kilotons. and who says this book was s*** and that clancy's books are getting worse? well, i don't know about his other series, but the jack ryan/rainbow 6 books rule.

Sum of all Fears is part of the Jack Ryan series. Hunter for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger are also part of the series, so Sum of All Fears is a quasi sequel to them.

if you liked the book its doubtful u will like how they BUTCHERED it , to make it a movie. Some of the things have been kept , but really ditching some dirty arabs for some nazis, get real movie makers.
On a side note having just finished clancys latest book Red Rabbit i advise ppl to give it a read. Lots of spy stuff, but not very long at all :( If you havent read the book you wont notice how they f***ing butchered it. Go read the book , its more enjoyable. |

doh, typo, fixed.
Yeh, Batman definitely went downhill. Val Kilmer was ok, prolly cuz he was a bit more physically intimidating, but Michael Keaton had a heaps better 'haunted' look about him that I would associate with Bruce Wayne. He rocked! |

this is the 3rd Jack Ryan and replacing Harrison Ford is just a dumb idea. It makes me mad!As opposed to Alex Baldwin (who I actually thought played the character better) in Hunt for the Red October and Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger? The director (his name eludes me atm) pulled out of Sum of All Fears first to do Rabbit Proof Fence, then Harrison Ford pulled out, so of course it had to be changed. They totally butchered Clear and Present Danger,(they killed off Dan *Insert Surname* the FBI agent who ends up becoming the FBI director in Executive Decision) so why not Sum of All Fears? Heh Trog, I seriously question your taste if you thought the Sum of All Fears was good ;), I thought it was the worse one of the lot! Red Storm Rising is by far the best non-Jack Ryan book that Clancy has done, another semi-Ryan one is Without Remorse if u are a fan of John Clark's. |

Dan Murray. Clear and Present Danger was obviously butchered a hell of a lot less than SOAF has been though! SOAF was good, not the usual action slaw but a nice thriller with awesome technical detail that I found really interesting. Also, it had F-14s kicking ass and John Clark.
I agree that Alec Baldwin was a mad cainer Jack Ryan though - he fits the mental image I had of him better than anyone. Of course, he's a fat f*** now though so wouldn't be able to do it! Without Remorse is _the best book_ Clancy has written, imho. By miles. That will be the most killer movie if they ever get around to making it. Clark is the most badass character ever! |

Red Storm Rising was his best book ever. Without Remorse is second however. Of course, both of them are completely different sorts of stories so I guess it's not a fair comparison.
I finished reading Red Rabbit the other day...*yawn* Sure I guess it might have been okayish as a "this is how the CIA/SIS/KGB operates/used to operate". Or at least officially for the conspiracy theorists. Being a Tom Clancy book, it's so ludicrously pro-American at the expense of everything else, that you just roll your eyes... Still, despite all that, at least it was better than the Stephen Coonts book Saucer that I read recently. |

It's a shame Alec Baldwin is, as mentioned, a fat f***, as he was tops in Hunt for Red October. Now if I read a Clancy book I tend to visualise Ryan as Baldwin.
I constantly get freaked out when I think of Executive Decision predated 9/11 by so many years, yet in many ways its pretty f***ing spot on. |

Remember what happened to batman when Tim Burton stopped directing is more accurate I feel. Exactly. There is no doubt that the films went downhill from the 3rd one onwards but that was because of Joel Schumacher, and his f*****ry ideas like putting nipples on batman. The new scripts made the batman character a bit more of a bundle of gooey emotions which most of us didn't give a frick about, but I still think Val Kilmer could've played a better batman than crusty Keaton. |

you all speak about how they f***ed up the ryan character , and well i have to agree. i am with trog, baldwin was much like the ryan i imagined when reading the books, but harrison was very very good.
But i reckoned they f***ed with the clark character in CAPD and in SOAF i think they got a little closer , but who do u reckon is the "clark" character |

I think he used to be, but he's sliding! Rainbox Six was drivel, with some interspersed action scenes (which were awesome). I bought one of his non-fiction books recently about the Delta Force, and it was one of the most non-engaging things I've ever read - its like we're just supposed to remember that he wrote all these awesome books and that's enough. Everything he's done recently seems to be cash in. I'll still get the new book, but don't really have high hopes for it - he's gone back in time because Ryan is pretty much his most involved and best developed character, but dragging him out as President is way less exciting than throwing him back to when he can use a gun and run around and be an action hero.

Actually Red Storm Rising was co-written f***ed if I can remember if it was Larry Bond or Clive Cuzzler that wrote it with Clancy though :-(
Red Storm Rising is still my favourite Clancy novel. I just finished re-reading Without Remorse and I really wish they'd make that one into a movie as well. I didn't realise the first time through that Jack Ryans farther was the cop pursuing Kelly/Clark (btw that doesn't give any of the story away its just an interesting addition to the novel). |

Ruhk coonts has gone waaaaaaaaay downhill. He wrote Flight of the intruder didn't he?
can someone remember who wrote "flight of the old dog" ? I used to read his series as well the one with Patrick Maclanahan as the main character. His books were entertaining but got waaay outta hand. |

Even though I much prefer the darker first two batman movies by Burton I still respect Joel SChumacher as a director. Batman, while all campy and funny, was a fairly good Batman IMHO. However, Batman & Robin (the movie) is a pile of trash.
I wonder who will get to be ol' Bruce Wayne in the next Batman movie... (hopefully will go ahead with Darren Aronofksy as director). (BTW Joel Schumacher has directed some f***in' excellent films: Falling Down, Tigerland) Also, it was Phillip Noyce who directed CAPD and PG. |

The only crap thing is how immortal Ryan and Kelly are.
And how Clancy obviously fantasises about being a mixture of the two, so somehow his wall street trader nerd guy somehow gets to be president. THAT'S NOT A STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION AT ALL. |

Yeah, after finishing that Coonts book (which apart from maybe one scene, should have been classed as a children's book), I read the latest Dale Brown book. Another guy who can't write too well, though at least he's better than Coonts.
Another author who probably won't be winning any writing prizes in a hurry, but does actually make some pretty fun books is Matthew Reilly. His stories are so way over the top, that it's comedic, but they're still fun to read :) I'm probably going to either start a full reread of The Wheel of Time or maybe just Book 9 next....That or a reread of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series as it so far stands. |

Saw it last night, and quite enjoyed it. Bear in mind that the movie is completely different from the book in almost every respect, but the good thing is that the movie is different in a good way. Sure, its still nowehere near as good as the novel, but it was still a good movie. After you get over the stupid changes and stop yelling 'Ryan is supposed to be married, you stupid f***s! Neo-Nazis? What were yout thinking!?!' and so forth, it really not bad. Also, Ben Affleck is bad, but thats hardly unexpected. Still worth seeing.
