Topic: Defender of the Crown on PS2

Theres been a rather large thread on retro-gaming doing the rounds on the forums lately, and talk of the Commodore 64 has had quite a few reminiscing. One of the games a few people have mentioned is Defender of the Crown, a little strategy title made by a small company called Cinemaware. Its gathered quite a following over the years and to this day still has a very devoted fan base.

So Cinemaware thought "what the heck" and have now decided to bring Defender of the Crown to the PS2. The new version Defender of the Crown: Robin Hood, is more a remake of the original than a sequel. Instead of controlling some unnamed Saxxon Lord, you are Robin Hood, fighting to initially win back your realm of Sherwood Forest, and then embarking on a quest to unite the British Isles under your rule.

The whole thing is presented in very luscious 3d, and you command your troops from an overhead map of Britian in the late 12th century. You can lay siege to castles, joust, engage in a little archery (being that you're robin hood and all), and even storm people's castles, fighting your way to the vault to steal their gold (I guess this comes under the rob from the rich part of things).

The game is looking pretty awesome so far, IGN have a full preview that goes into a bit more detail about the game and contains some screenshots, I'd recommend any fans of strategy war games or the original DOC to definately have a look :)

I hope they realise that the highlight and compelling factor in DOTC was the VERY simple strategy game on the basic map, the outcome of which was fought within very short mini games. These mini-games where just like 'oh yeah cool another mini game' but the real thing that kept people involved was the simple RISK-like strategy game.. well that's my take on it anyway.. all this talk of 3D and stuff has me worried, sure the Jousting was 3D, but it was a very short minor part of the game.

Nahhhhh the real thing that kept people coming back was the chance to win the maiden and nail her by candlelight in your chamber...

Man, that game rocked; I remember spending hours playing that. natslovR is right though, if it doesn't come back with the simplicity of the original, it might just not be cool.

Damn I played DOTC freakin ages ago on my old 386..
I must say it brings back some fond memories.. Even if it was CGA. lol

A good game should be like chess.
Simple to pick up, yet have timeless depth in its stratagy. DOTC had this, easy gameplay, with timeless stratgy as you tried win your provences. The mini-games are there to help break up the game, giveing you time to think about your next move, without you really knowing about it.
And getting robin hood to help out in segies and stuff 0wned. Robins band sneaks up the garrison and slit the thought of sleeping guards... o yeah..
If a game has s***storms replayability it most likly has deep stratagy element to it.

chess == a timeless game, that will forever be played unmodifed.
