Haven't got to post a story like this in a long time, Microsoft said today that it will increase expenditure on research and development by 20% this year and hire an additional 5000 employees or 10% of its current work force. Much nicer than the usual employment news.

Does anyone else find this somewhat ironic, what with the microsoft advertising on the site and all.

It's almost like... they're watching us...

i·ron·ic Pronunciation Key (-rnk) also i·ron·i·cal (-rn-kl)
adj.

Characterized by or constituting irony.
Given to the use of irony. See Synonyms at sarcastic.
Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended: madness, an ironic fate for such a clear thinker.

Usage Note: The words ironic, irony, and ironically are sometimes used of events and circumstances that might better be described as simply “coincidental” or “improbable,” in that they suggest no particular lessons about human vanity or folly. Thus 78 percent of the Usage Panel rejects the use of ironically in the sentence In 1969 Susie moved from Ithaca to California where she met her husband-to-be, who, ironically, also came from upstate New York. Some Panelists noted that this particular usage might be acceptable if Susie had in fact moved to California in order to find a husband, in which case the story could be taken as exemplifying the folly of supposing that we can know what fate has in store for us. By contrast, 73 percent accepted the sentence Ironically, even as the government was fulminating against American policy, American jeans and videocassettes were the hottest items in the stalls of the market, where the incongruity can be seen as an example of human inconsistency.

Microsoft employ people from all over the world.

A ex-uni grad from Australia who now works at MS in the US came to my uni to recruit graduates.

From a lot of what I've heard, the working conditions @ MS are nothing to be laughed at. They're damn nice if u can get in.

And while I'm talking about it, if it wasn't for MS, Windows and their marketing, PCs would never have become as popular as they are.

Quote from the article re: Mobile, Phones, Enterprise Servers etc...

"Microsoft is the primary competitor to these leading companies in most of these markets, which helps boost quality and innovation. I might be going off on a tangent, but if Microsoft can enter already dominated markets and manage to keep its head above water, why can't other large companies compete in markets Microsoft dominates? Better news than what we are used to hearing about employment issue's. Only hope that a fair whack of those job's are down here in AU. We could really use 'em.

Cheers
