I am having a few probs installing new drivers for new hardware on my win2k system. After the system starts up it says it detects new hardware but when i choose the folder which i extracted the new drivers, win2k says that it finds a "better" driver for the device and won't let me use the new one. Any ideas how to overcome this guys?

Oh and btw how do you edit the registry to delete a startup reference? Cause when i boot up the system, it comes up with dialogue boxes saying that it couldn't find a program which was asked to autolaunch when it was installed, to launch (i deleted it without going through the control panel- add/remove programs)

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanx.

Regarding your first problem, make sure you select "Display a list of all drivers..." and dont select for it to search. Even thought you can still specify the path, when you select to search for the best driver, it still craps on about how it thinks it's driver is better. BTW this same s*** happens in win98, althought its hardly a problem

And wif your second prob, what is the program it tries to launch? Cause you could try doing a search for it in the registry and just manually deleting it

hope this helps =)

not too sure about win2k, but with win98se just go

Start -> Run -> type in " msconfig " (without the "")

carefull with this cause it might do something bad mmkay

but click the startup tab and unclicky all the gay stuff and whollah

fork^ msconfig didn't work - windows said that it couldn't find the file.

Creepingdeath - I tried your suggestion but when i tell it to list all compatible dirvers and then select "Have disk" and point it in the right directory it doesn't display the new driver and ends up installing the old "windows - better" driver!!

Any other suggestions???? Guys???

*GENUINE ANSWER HERE*

Let win2k install whatever the hell it wants, then go to your c:\winnt\inf directory and move all the files called stuff like oem1.* oem2.* etc to a temp subdirectory. Then when you go to install the correct drivers for the device, win2k won't find the old ones that it installed before and will see the ones you want as the 'best' ones. Well, this works for the nvidia drivers anyway and i almost have to do this every darn time i upgrade. I've been doing it for years and it doesnt seem to hurt anything.
