ok

quake3 was running fine 2 days ago...now all of a sudden the sound decides to f*** up.

it sounds like its running at about 3 frames per second (real chunky sound) even tho the video is displaying its usual 125.

i have tried a re-install of quake3 and found that its the 1.27h_beta exe that does it ?!, when i apply the 1.27g exe the sound seems to run at like 30 fps with a 200ms lag from when the sound happens to when i hear it. sys specs are following:

celeron 875
sdr 6600 (asus) with dets 6.50
sound blaster live! value with 4.11.01.0711 drivers (10-07-99) these are recent as of a few months ago from the creative web site. (sound card was purchased feb 2000)
128 ram
6gb seagate hdd 5400 (about 2 years old now)
8x panasonic DVD - recently ive noticed that there is like a fuzz sound when i watch DVD's (i can only bearly hear it when volume is at max) but i know that it wasnt there before.
running win98SE with only the vbrun60sp5.exe patch installed (updates dll's etc, installed about a month ago now) no other patches have been installed on it cept for ie 5.5

if any of you have any suggestions at all please let me know
my best guess is that its the sound card (der) or the drivers, i will get some updated drivers as a last resort as i am happy with these ones atm (only sb ones that dont gimme any troubles) also it might be my old hdd ?! (getting a 46gb 7200 soon)

oh and *every* other sound application works fine....the only other game i have tried it on tho is quake cause i dont have any other games or couldnt be bothered installing them as i dont think it will help

*ok i tried colin mcrae rally2 and halflife (no updates) and they both work fine*

any suggestion would be much appreciated

Ahh easy fix, go to where your q3 is downloaded, delete it, Then install cs, this will kill all your gay stuff on your pc. Delete cs. then get the Operation Flash Point Demo, play that forever, Then reinstall q3. PLUG IN YOUR SPEAKERS. and play, ooher TRAVIS your always the first to reply, and the last to actually help. ooher

Fork, this problem has been discussed to great extent on PlanetQuake for some time now. The guys at ID have been trying to re=produce the problem but reckon they can't. There are heaps of people on that forum who all have similar problems relating to the 1.27h beta and Sound Blaster Live cards. Me included.

My problem was not the sudden drop in perfromance but rather a crackking or 'pausing' effect every now and then. really s***ted me off... using the 1.27g patch and it was fine. The id guys offered the reason as being that the game is contantly laoding 'media' on the fly and this can cause system degradation...not too many on the forum baought it though.

Ok so from all the solutions I tried this one seemed to alleviate my prob and it might help you.

In the console type

give it a go . Hope it helps.

i managed to fix the problem after d/l the latest drivers (again) off the creative website.

i uninstalled my sound card and deleted all the files associated with it.

after reinstalling my sound card from scratch q3 now seems to work fine

go figure ?!

-also thanks to those that helped =)
