Hmmm

I have this "friend" who's too "lazy" to unlock his xp.. :)

err.. i can tell by the look on your face that you don't believe me. I can't be rooted unlocking this xp.. I was wondering is there like a store or some dude in brisbane that does it.. i simply cannot be f***ED doing it.. with all that little magnified conductive paint bs et al.

ask in the AMD forum on OCAU - there are a few fellas willing to do it for a small fee or even for a free lunch :)

$10 says that if they f*** it, they will attempt an RA claim.

gotta love the people that try RA after voiding a warranty.

Sometimes I think that AMD deliberately make their chips overclockable and only put the crackable barriers their to merely appear that they are trying to stop it.

When you think about it, the reseller will be able to tell it's been f***ed with, and deny a Warranty claim, leaving the customer with no chip.
Whats he gonna do?

Buy another one.

Depends on how good a CPU you get cOrr. A mate bought an Athlon 1GHz and got 1.5GHz out of it. I OC my 1.2 to 1.4 (could probably go higher with a bit more tweaking - but I'm lazy). When my friend bought the 1GHz the 1.5GHz hadn't even been released and the 1.4GHz were more than twice the price of his 1GHz. So for the cost of five minutes and a pencil he got 50% more speed out of his CPU.

The XPs are harder to unlock, but not hugely so. Bit of superglue and some conductive paint and about 1.2 an hour of your time. Most of us already have superglue lying around so it'd just the paint - and you can buy "Car De-mister Touchup Paint" from Carsound for about $8 and it does the job.

skrybe is right, not all CPUs are created equal. Due to flaws in the manufacturing process which I'm sure you've all heard about, no two CPUs are EXACTLY the same. Hell, a CPU might be marked far lower than what it can do because it failed the high-speed test by a fraction. I'm not sure what the tolerances of both AMD and Intel are though.
