well if ur having continous probs with it and the file keeps recorrupting, id suggest a format is in order, cause if its only a file its software based, it could be ur PS2 port possibly, try a format first.
Then if it still does it borrow a usb keyboard off someone to test it,
If ur still having probs, time to start saving for a new motherboard.

it could be a virus, but its hard to tell

Can you boot the machine in safe mode (if you dont know how, hit f8 just after the BIOS screen) and then enter your OS. Try removing your keyboard from the device manager or something.

If that doesnt work, plug your drive into another machine and do a virus scan on it.

When your machine boots, does it beep and say 'hit f1 to continue - keyboard error' or your BIOS manufacturers equivalent?

apart from that, i also dont know if you have your HDD set as FAT or NTFS. If its FAT then life is alot easier to you - but if per chance its NTFS, and you can get it to boot, try only allowing read access to system to determine whether its trying to write to the file. If it does try to write to it, you may get a BSOD, but at least you might be able to work out whats going wrong.

I have same sorta troubles, only its not a file..

My Keyboard dies in the arse for no reason if it stays not being used for to long..

If I hit reset button, it will always 100% guaranteed not work... I have to full power down, then power up again for it to work... I think its my PS2 port dying... could very well be the same sorta thing if a format/latest signature virus scan doesnt fix.

Dont know of any virus' that'd just attack ur keyboard tho :/

it's NTFS, and i'd really prefer not to format if possible.

i can boot into windows, my keybaord just doesn't work, so hence i can't get into my admin acc***, just the guest one that requires no password.

I have fixed this once by plugging my HDD into this machine and then copting the file accross, but 3 hours later the file was corupted again, starting to really piss me off.

then try removing 'modify' for that file then and see what happens. (for permissions that is)

I don't think a virus is attacking my keyboard, but possibly corrupting the file in question that just so happens to have something to do with my keyboard.

when i boot up and go into windows guest account and go to control panel and keyboard etc it appers to not rregister a keyboard at all, then i go back in and it says this device is working properl, yet still the keyboard fails to work.

sometimes whn i boot up it llets me in bios by pressing delete and sometimes it doesn't.

yesterday it wouldn't let me boot up at all if my keyboard was plugged in, now its not so picky, but the same prob sill persists.

fireblood: i have formatted about 2 months ago, and formatting does not get rid of viruses at all, you can format all you like you can still have a virus in your system.

trigger wut r u trying to tell us? r u trying to say that formatting wont get rid of viruses? well doing a proper format will most definatly get rid of em.

how can a hdd still hav data on it when its writen everysingle 1 and 0?

how ever if ur backups etc hav been burnt wit viruses in em then there wos no reall point in formatting. scan ur backups etc

or if u hav that email thats got all those pics on it that u love wit lil attachments here and there then there it goes again. scan ur emails etc if ur worried about it all. i dont bother myself, when it starts to fuk up i kno its due for a formatt or when i run out of hdd space :D

I formatted the drive completely, and reinstalled XP.

This fixed the problem for about 12 hours and my machine was running perfet, in fact I was VERY happy with the result.

but NO!! ow I can't f***ing type again, i am not getting the error message about ntoskrnl.exe, but it boots up and won't let me type, in fact it won't even let me into bios anymore!!

so I'm thinking it MUST be my ps2 port thats dying cause none of the keyboards in my house work either.

i don't want to go buy a usb keybaord if i won't solve the problem though. anyone in the toowong are with a usb keybaord they don't mind lending? :P

anyway any help would be appreciated

well I think we have isolated the problem fianlly.

we plugged my keybaord into one of the other machines and they f***jing shat themselves, so its one keybaord tha is f***ed and it must corrupt a file so that no keyboard works.

format and format /mbr should remove just about every virus....especially if you fdisk as well.

Now as for ya problem I dont think Ive ever heard of a keyboard corrupting a file. I cant see how it would!...of course I could be wrong but it seems very weird.
