HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - The creator of the hit FX cop series "The Shield" has signed a deal to adapt the shoot-'em-up video game "Max Payne" for the big screen.

Max Payne is an incredible character with a rabid fan base," said Shawn Ryan, who will adapt the property for Dimension Films. "As a writer and a gamer, I was ecstatic when (Dimension chief) Bob Weinstein offered me the opportunity to pen this potential franchise."
I just hope this movie is as good and enjoyable as the game was.

At least in Max Payne, they have a *little* more material to work with than say, Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

There are some games that could have potential as movies. Deus Ex and Thief spring to mind.

Why not just play Deus Ex instead?

It is an interactive movie where you are not only the star, but also the director.

Arnie Schwarznegger (sp?) was meant to be the main character in DOOM ages ago ... Turned out to be a flop, so they ditched it...

Max payne actually put on the movies would work quite well if its done correctly, it has a lot of potential to be really good
on the other hand it could be complete and utter ass
Deus Ex would be incredibly sexy if it were done..

Well the game actually has a storyline unlike streetfighter/mortal kombat and we all know that resident evil is getting decent reviews which is probably due to the fact that the director had a story line to work with.

Most game-movie conversions suck ass because the movies are made by people in hollywood who are out to make lots of money and wont let the story be very in depth. Max Payne is a much better base as it borrowed so heavily from film noir and crime movies to get its story as well as its ingame cutscene shots which looked just like a movie. Bullet time would really foul this movie up if it was overused as it has become way too common and the average viewer would sit there saying "ripoff". What should happen is have the games writers contribute to the scriptwriting and have all the storyboards based around those in the game. A prequal to the game would also make a cool movie as it would give the filmmakers poetic licence without taking s*** from the gamers.

Hehe, I was thinking, just the other day about how well Max Payne would translate to the cinema.

I agree with some of that, however I think game<->movie conversions would work better if the movie production team actually consulted with the game dev. team so as to maintain consistency. Of course that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed poetic license, it just means that the film makers should at least try and keep within in the game's "universe".

Personally I didn't give two hoots about the bullet-time in Max Payne. The only thing that interested me was the storyline and the cinematic atmosphere. Those, in my opinion, are among the MOST important things in a game. Deus Ex had both of these qualities in addition to its brilliant design which is why I think its the best single-player game to date.

Lastly, one thing that really annoys me with game to movie conversions is how they always manage to "dumb it down". And as a result we end up with a goofy-looking, cheese and ham corn-dog.

Maybe it's jsut me, but i reckon game movies suck BECAUSE they try and make it like the game, instead of just making a good movie. They get too caught up in having this or that, and just forget to stop and wonder wether it will suck or not.

max payne pretty much was a movie, that you had to click buttons for to make it go from scene to scene.

wow this really is great news. as others above me have said game to movie coversions and vice-versa have usually sucked but in this case i don't know how they could go wrong. I mean its got an excellent story line for one and secondly it has great action.

i can't wait!

Thief would definately make an unreal movie experience.

I hope they pull this off, I'd hate for them to slap Max Payne down from its podeum due to some poorly produced movie flop.

i think over the years they have learnt how to make a decent game movie eg, tomb raider and resident evil, sure tomb raider was cheesy but that was typically expected, i think game movies are just going to get better and better

They should make a movie of Quake and Quake 2 for sure... and it would have to have Arnie in it :) ALl those dark gothic type levels would make for an unreal movie.

itd take a while to get arnie tho
current schedule: T3, total recall2, true lies2.
they should make the movie like i play the game, run in, shoot baby and wife to make sure theyre dead (otherwise, no reason to kill junkies) then break all tvs/windows/brakable things possible, jump around and use bullet time when not needed, eg. to walk down some stairs

I played through all of Max Payne without ever using bullet-time and I didn't die that much, and when I did die it was only because aiming @ 2 fps is quite a task.

Yer I did like doing the open door, jump in, start bullet time, kill everyone with BS head shots before the first hits the ground, end bullet time.

It just got kinda boring the 42nd time I did it and never got better.

they put bullet time in for a reason, trying to act hardcore by saying you didnt use it just proves how stupid you are. and sif watchign bullets fly past your head wasnt the best thing ever, kind like when i actually rid a rocket in q3 generations.. i spooged so hard that day

Not acting hardcore acrylic, I just didn't like it. I liked being able to walk in and waste all of the AI guys in less than 5 seconds without having to use slow-motion to compensate for slow reflexes.

it still would have been pretty cool, just not as cool.

Secondly, just cause the game has a good storyline and s*** doesn't mean the movie will be good.

You can make a good movie out of ANYTHING, it takes talented directing and such. If a movie does not have this, it will suck. So what MP already ahs, will have jack s*** all effect on the movie.

What was so good about the story line for Max Payne, its on about the same par as the plot for Collateral Damage. The over the top dialogue and monologues in Max Payne didn't really help it either.

Goddamn try Eric Mabius from Resident Evil as Max Payne. Deadset if they didn't model Max of him than he must be the guys brother or something. Hmmm maybe he COULD get a colt up the coti to perfect that Max Payne grimace

Indeed, first time I saw Mabius in Resident Evil I thought WTF he looks like Max Paine. And then when they call him Max (that's the character's name) that just pushed it over the edge.

Eric should play Max :p
