Interesting reading here.

Despite the tough competition between AMD and Intel, PC buyers shouldn't expect a speed race this year, Krewell said. It's clear that Intel and the P4 will dominate in the realm of pure megahertz. However, AMD is likely to keep its lead in actual performance for some time, he said. Right now, a PC running a 1.1GHz Athlon with standard PC133 SDRAM will outperform one with a 1.5GHz P4 with RDRAM on most benchmarks, he said.

Heres a thing AMD sux it always will, p4 blows goats (for the meantime) Pentium 3's have come down in price a s***load so, if you want REAL POWER get dual
pentium III 933's and run under win2k and watch it s*** over anything else on the market.

Well, I might go sell my Athlon and waste a s***load of money on dual PIII's now, cause you just put up such a great argument!

Hey EXoDuS, some of us dont have to cash to buy dual processing computers. Actually, most of us don't. So lets be a little realistic shall we?

very respectable in all games atm

WHy get a gay Duron when you can get a Thunderbird for just a little more. For gaming dual CPU's are piss poor from what I have read. Q3 is the only game that supports it and a 1.1 gig T-bird would almost certainly outperform a dual 933 for about a quarter of the money in q3.

I notice that it says Athlon not TBird
y is that?
isn't the Tbird the newer CPU?

which is worth more the Athlon or the Tbird?

I got a Athlon 700, I can't push it past 770mghz. go figure plus I had a golden orb on it.

and another thing.
I've got a geforce v6600 deluxe and I can't get past 48fps on CS!!!! Someone help me pls
I wanna atlest get 78fps!!!

EniGma: Tunderbirds are the newer Athlons with on - die cache.. all new Athlons these days are Tbirds..

as for overlocking yours... thats cos you are doing it with the FSB.. you need a GFD for your athlon so you can adjust the multiplier..

PS. Golden Orbs suck

Yeah, fsb overclocking on Athlons (Classics - which yours is - or Tbirds) isn't very good. I think I got to like 105MHz fsb or so, which isn't much. Mind you that was when I had pc100 ram. But still if you get past 110 you're doing really well normally.

But unlike Intel CPU's there's ways to change your multiplier on AMD chips. :)

Oh, and sif Golden Orbs aren't better than the Just Cooler twin-fan hsf I got with my cpu (which promptly died). And in the end the Gorb was the same price! :)

if I bring my comp to QGL
would one of u guys be happy to O/C it for me
and get my frigin FPS to run higher?

If it's a Slot A Athlon there's two ways to o/c:

1) Change a couple of surface mount resistors (very hard way)
2) plug in a gfd (gold finger device) and away you go.

Unfortunately, both methods require opening the casing on your processor, and that can be a risky operation. If you slip, you can easily scratch your pcb which may destroy your processor. I am not willing to do it to my own processor, so I will have to say no, I won't be able to help you.

If you can find someone who has opened a few slot a casings then see if you can persuade them to help you.

For all those Athlon Classic owners out there, check out the serial number explanation article over at AthlonOC.com

Very interesting stuff. Mine's a week 17, 2000, 0.18 core from the Dresden Fab.

Their database used to show what week number ppl's processors were, what they were sold as, what core they actually had in it (a 700 is not necessarily a 700. :) and what speed it was overclocked to.

Week 17's like mine mostly had 800 to 900mhz cores (ie, they had really good yields that week) and have been known to overclock to 1000MHz and above - sometimes near 1.1GHz. =)

Randall C. Kennedy certainly thinks so. Who is he? He's director of research at
Competitive Systems Analysis, and he did work for Intel.

"Basically the benchmarks out there today say what Intel wants said about PC performance," states Kennedy, referring to suites from Ziff-Davis and BAPCo.

Originally, Kennedy was to help create a benchmark to show the advantages of Rambus memory. But after Intel stopped pushing the Rambus wagon so hard, he was to help Intel measure the Pentium 4 performance over the Pentium III.

The work for Intel fell through when Kennedy published a critical article on Pentium performance. Kennedy later decided to go independent and make his work, Benchmark Studio, available currently as a free download.

What makes this benchmark any different from the rest? The creators claim that Benchmark Studio is a more realistic representation of actual performance demands from a user.

While this benchmark was largely developed for Intel, it ironically show's AMD Athlon processors as superior to the Pentium 4 line. In fact, Benchmark Studio shows that even modest dual-Pentium III systems outperforming the top Pentium 4.

So far the tests claim eye-opening results. For instance, they show that an Athlon processor in a system with double-data-rate SDRAMs delivers about 15 percent more performance than a Pentium 4 system with Direct Rambus, Kennedy said. They also show a desktop with two 733-MHz Pentium III chips is almost twice as fast as a PC using the latest 1.5-GHz Pentium 4, a finding that might surprise many in the industry where speed is king and dual-processor desktops never took off. Kennedy's test also showed the 1.5-GHz Pentium 4 significantly outperforms the 1-GHz Pentium III, he said.

More about Benchmark Studio, as well as an interesting parallel between the Pentium 4 and SUVs, can be read in this EETimes article.

Celeron = the mark of a Homosexual :) They have always been s*** and always will be s***. My P2 400 used to thrash Celeron 300a's @ 450, with pretty much equal setups. Now my Athlon thrashs o'clocked Celery 2's that are up to 850 mhz.

Get an Asus or ABit. Generally regarded as the best motherboard makers by far.

I got a Asus K7V
they were good when first released
though the Abit A7T raid ownz the Asus
so for the newer and better mobo get the Abit

FINALLY SOMEONE WITH THE SAME PROb!
I get 50fps max
I use to get 78fps in Direct X mode but that crashes and has a spaz attack now and then.

I think it is the old Athlon CPU's.
they r classics.
I got it the 2nd week they came out.
I thought I had the perfect setup.
fark I was wrong, something about the Athlon CPU chipset being fixed and not being able to O/C?

Some geek was talking about it, he returned it and bought a Duron.
I just bought a 64mb stick of Ram.
Map changes in CS now take 8secs and under.
sweet
256MB pci 133 Ram kicks ass.
but still stuck with the gay Athlon that won't push any more that 770mhz.
very pissed off.

well i would love a p4 from all reprts (Not early pre relaesed benchmarks - actual comments from real people) the kick ass. But its true that a t-bird will kick pretty much the same amount of ass for alot les $$$. As for u guys with s*** fps go to one of those tweak sites and get the guides they'll help alot. As for the A7T raid ive heard that the raid controller on that board is a absolute f*** to get to work proper though havent done it myself so feel free to contradict.
