guys why don't we set up a help desk at the lan for people that are having problems with their computers.
I know how frustrating it is when you have a problem and have NFi what is wrong..
I am not saying people have to spend all day at the desk but if you have a spare moment you may be able to help out a fellow gamer...

2c worth...

We already have a help desk at the lans...

Only it's not called a "help desk"... it's called "Dear StreX"...

And it's not for people with computer problems.... it's for guys who have problems with their boyfriends....

And StreX is always willing to "help out" a fellow gaymer...

haha! :)

Nah, seriously that's not a bad idea, having someone or a couple of people who can easily be identified (maybe trog can supply a couple of bandanas :) if you need somewhere to turn...

might help if i could type properly, but if they were to set one up i would be more than willing to help out fellow ppl.

But there has to be a condition put on it that only ppl that have paid to have their machines there can access it. and also that the help desk is only there to get machines up and running to pla games and nothing more. Coz i would not like it ppl kept coming up and asking how to over clock it.

Oneo ther thing that i would also want to be aware of is if that we do accident damage to a part while trying to fix them we aren't held responsible. i always have the fear of doing that when fixing other ppls machines.

But they r the only things i can think about atm. If there waws some type of cover for the ppl working behind the counter then i am sure that it would be a success.

Yer, QGL already has several 'help desks'. Widely known as Nathan, Saint, Trog and any other admin within reach at the time.

it never seems to amaze me how so many gamers are willing to help. i've never had anyone knock me back for technical advice at a lan.

(obviously interupting someone during a match is suicidal :)

Generally speaking, anyone in an admin t-shirt can help you with anything during the day. Unless you've got a really really hard problem :P

I don't know how well an actual help desk would work cause there would never be someone sitting at the desk, they'll be running around fixing puters.

unless this has been mentioned before, there is helpdesks at QGL lan, and they got legs

look for an admin, club them down and drag them back to your computer and casually explain what's wrong when they regain consciousness

see, simple

get the drift yet?

I would have problems with a help desk, it sounds like a service as apposed to a favour. I woudlnt really want to be held liable for one of your parents $3k computers.

its somthing that we have been doing since day dot, helping people fix s***. Providing its a fault specific to a persons ability to play on our lan we dont mind doing it. Playing help desk for titles like Q3 and cs isnt it though, that is the area of activision and jack of all games, not us :)

So often I have found I'm ending up tweeking or updating someones q3 or cs so it will work as opposed to devoting time to more searious problems like network cards up the s***. One thing though, if your network card isnt working it will always be your pc or the cable, never our network.

If you do have a problem at the lan sing out, if the admin you ask cant fix it he will direct you to someone that can

And if your computer has a problem accessing the network, please check your ip.... even if you are sure its right.... just humour us or something. Cause the last think i like doing is doing an ipconfig to find out that the ip has been set incorrectly after asking about 5 times if the ip is correct.

Ah ha I have that happen quite a bit, its fun. People putting in the wrong subnet mask is good fun too.

I also like the "I can't see anyone in network neighborhood" pseudo-question, to which I inevitably reply "pfft, let's see if you can ping someone".

While I'm on it, here we go... The QGL's TOP 5 REASONS YOUR NETWORK CARD ISNT WORKING:

#5. Dodgy or crossover cable (check your link lights!)
#4. Wrong IP entered
#3. Assigning your IP to two or more adapters (eg network and dialup)
#2. Corrupted drivers (remove and re-install)

And #1... Dodgy cable that gives link light but sends no data at 100mbit!

Jim and various other QGL admin deny the existance of the fabled '10mbit-only' network cable, but I've seen fist hand. Configuring the network card to use 10mbit half-duplex fixes the problem.

Nats, you've got it all wrong - I believe you, really.

Yeah, tis almost a work of art to make a 100mbit cable. If you don't get the wires connected int he right order, you can get too much noise in it to run at 100mbit, but it will run fine at 10mbit.

Well, that's what I've been led to believe and I'm sure someone will say that's a crock of s***. :)
