Ok I'll give you a bit of a rough idea what would like to learn and if you could name a course that you think would be relivent and where I could do it please let me know.

Alright firstly I would like to learn about biulding pc's plus basic pc opperations, just to give me some kind of foundation to biuld on when I go to learn other stuff.

Secondly I'd like to learn website design or for that matter anything to do with video editing.

I guess more importantly I need a course that gives me a good starting point and overview of as many different areas as possible, just so I can get a good idea of what I realy want to get into the most.

The other thing is I work so I'd have to do something that would allow me to still continue working. My job is casual so I do have a fair amount of felexiblity.

If you have any ideas I'd realy like to hear them and if I haven't made myself very clear just ask me and I'll try to be more specific.Keep in mind my knowledge on pc's is pretty limited.

Thanx guys.

trial and error seems to work best for me... no fancy courses... play around with stuff.. if it doesnt work, read up about it on the net.. if it does work, well done..

just play around with stuff and you'll find something you like..

you dont need to rush out and spend money on a course... but if you really wanna, you prolly should ask to talk to someone at a TAFE and they'll help you find something that suits you..

Yeah that sounds fair enough, mind you I'm one of those ppl that does better when I can see what a teacher is doing I don't learn very well straight out of books.

It's abit like monkey see monkey do. :)

Once I have the hang of something though I do pretty well.

Well for the basic stuff with web design and basic hardware you can do short or long course at TAFE that should be practical fairly informative. What Splash said is true - trial and error and learning form friends is a great way to learn, thats how I learned everything.

Multimedia course, which should also be offered at TAFE, would be good for the video editing part I would say. Uni would just be annoying for you I think, TAFE is a better and easier option. More advanced stuff that you may want to know when you become proficient you can usually find in tutorials on the net.

WIth computer building, mate it is real simple - I learnt it in like two seconds. If you have troubles read the manual, as there are the odd tricky thing but most is simple as - just stick it where it fits. hope that helps dude.

If u do choose to do a course at a learning company(eg LearnKey(which suck)) make sure they have a good rep, me and a mate did MCP courses at this place which went bankrupt on the 2nd day of our course and took our $800 :( so jus be careful wif them, tafe is a heaps better way to go.

I am studying music performance on trumpet, and will prolly do some education subjects too later on. I was hoping actually to find a place in an Armed Forces band of some sort (preferably not Navy :P).

Taipan if you want a piece of paper and want to learn how to build pcs and that other stuff, interim technology do specialty courses on that sort of thing.

If you just wanna learn how to build pcs, do what i did, buy yourself a 486 or a pentium 100, make sure it's in working order first... and then just pull it to bits.

I mean COMPLETELY disassemble it, unscrew the motherboard, unplug anything that can BE unplugged.

Then you pile all the bits up, and then insert them back into your case one by one until they're all back in place, then switch it on.

If you smell burning, check your cables =)
If it beeps, check video and ram and hdd cables are plugged in right
If it doesn't beep and it doesn't work, check pc speaker is plugged in =)
If it works, hooray

If you get stuck, ask someone why, don't ask them to do it for you, you'll never learn then =)

One thing tho... my 486 cost $2700 and i was messing around with it, yours will probably cost $100 including monitor heh

Cheerio

Yeah that is a pretty good idea man. You learn far more by exploration and trial and error than by reading a text book.

Taipan.
If you want to start out, while getting qualifications, i would recommend the A+ hardware and software course. This course is very good, and would guide you from being completely stupid to knowing your way around a pc. You could do this at tafe (i think) or a learning centre like comtech. Yes i agree that trial and error is ok, but without the proper foundations you end up like that guy who burnt out 3 Athlon processors...
:D
have fun.

Hey Taipan,
I am building a server/p.c./router this saturday, its all in bits mate.. i.e. asus cusl2-c m/board, midi atx case, sony c.d. rom and floppy drive, case fans, cables, hard drive, cel.466 processor( given to me by mate.. it will do for now ), etc,etc..
After building, it's formating and drivers...

I am a electronic tech. by trade( 12 years ).

So i can teach you about switch mode power supplies and all sorts of electronic s***..at the component level.

I will instruct(and drink beer's) while you can do all the hands on stuff, bring your p.c. over if you want to reformat it as well.(plus all your drivers).
Then we can test them both through the new server by using optus cable and sygate...

My p.c. will be on line if we need drivers, etc...

Post me your e-mail address if you are interested..
I live at chermside near the prince charles hospital.
