ok right now ive got a logitech mouseman wheel and a mechwarrior3 mousepad

im thinking of going to a new mouse, what do you guys think? I dont mean to start a huge debate, but is it worth going to optical yet? old opticals seemed to skip alot but the ms optical 3.0 one hardly ever seems to skip at all and the dual logitech looks alright too

any suggestions for mice/mousepads?

Dans Data did a review, and basically came to the conclusion that even tho the Explorer had more impressive specs, the Logitech mouse felt more responsive. The new Dual Optic should be even better...

I can get the dual optical mouse to skip... But that seems to be a fluke on my mouse pad (Creative Industries, QUT mousepad)... It only skips at one particualr spot when I move it in a particular way. Fixed it by using my desk... Much smoother :P

Oh BTW, speaking of optical mice, does anyone here know how responsive they are to IR? I'm planning to swap out the red LEDs for IR LEDs... So that way everyone will think my optical mouse is borked :P

i used to be pretty anti-optical because i'm a low sens player who does a lot of flicking (with the mouse :) - not to mention a bad experience of a cheap logitech piece of s***.

however the 2 mice you mentioned (intelli explorer v3.0 and dual mouseman optical) eliminate the tracking problem with the optical mice, so (afaic) there is no reason *not* to use them (unless you like to play on a mirror)

in terms of optical tech the intellimouse is best (i believe microsoft finally pissed off agilent and developed their own tech in-house?) and after 2 weeks I haven't been able to make it skip or lose tracking at all (this includes full arm sweeps at top speed)

although the logitech does still skip at high speeds the threshhold is *very* high - higher than most quality ballmice so it isn't exactly a reason not to get an optical :) it makes up for this apparent shortfalling compared to the intelli v3 by having (imo, tho this is mainly subjective) better ergonomics - namely a better shaped case and well placed thumb button (not to mention the thing is actually weighted and can be opened easily)

comparatively the intelli's thumb button (although 2) are harder to press and it's a bit too light for my liking (easy matter to add some coins or something but but it was annoying to open)

i'd recommend either of these mice - but no particular one. seems to me the 'better' mouse is more a matter of personal taste

That's not very descriptive. I have the old explorer and I really like it.

I use a $5.00 mouse, so that when some little campin nancy caps my ass, I can take my frustrations out on the mouse and not worry about the cost involved.

Im very happy with my intelli v3, & the buttons can be bound to any key on the keyboard, which i couldnt do with my old logi mouseman+

I love having 5 buttons on my mouse

Heh, well the mouse that is used with my Wacom tablet (when the need arises... usually I use it just as an extra set of buttons when I'm working) can be physically changed to be a lefty or righty mouse... Though the with way the wacom drivers work, playing fps games with it is just wierd...

Hmmm, interesting idea with the IR leds. I'm not sure about it - i can't remember if its UV or IR that digital cameras are really sensitive to. Probably the only way you're going to find out is to try. The problem is that then YOU won't know when your mouse is borked :)
