Work your arse off where ever you go, get straight 7's, establish connections early, and it doesn't matter.

I'm lead to believe that QUT is the one that gts better recognition in the current marketplace, but a good graduate from either is still a good graduate.

Thanks. I've got a GPA of 6.3 in my current degree, just deciding on whether to do the grad law program at QUT or the undergrad law at UQ after I graduate from this degree (just over a year left).
Will probably go to QUT at this point, just was under the impression that UQ was the best place to go to make connections (and hence get the better job at the end...in combination with a good GPA of course).

Also, you're doing it wrong, as in choosing, if you're choosing based on whether you think one uni will give you a greater chance of success. The one factor that will determine whether you get a job at the end is you, not which uni you went to.

Where I will work from Monday, there are law grads from all the schools - Griffith, UQ, QUT, Southern Queensland etc.

The factors which you should use to determine which uni you want to go to are (in my order):

1. Elective subjects.
2. Distance of campus from home.
....
10. "Prestige".

I'm sure you can fill in the blanks.

The uni you go to can absolutely make a difference to your job prospects. One might have lecturers that get to know the students better and have connections with firms. They might have more practical training programs where you actually go and help out professionals in the field and get to know people that way. Even their course could have better lectures, textbooks, better facilities.

I don't disagree with what you're saying in your penultimate sentence, that is what I was talking about.

I did law at QUT, mates did law at UQ. QUT has open book exams, UQ doesn't. QUT has more and broader electives, UQ is fairly oldskool I believe.

Either one doesn't matter, and for a large part grades don't matter that much either - just get yourself into a firm asap as a clerk then paralegal from the get-go. There's a whole bunch of things to apply for but no one tells you about them and you have to apply for them like a year in advance from when they start, so look for them.

My understanding is that Law is essentially UQ's flagship degree, or speciality. So I'd presume it would be better. It's also where all the upper class kids end up apparently so if you're looking to make connections it's the way to go. (back when I was a little newb and knew nothing about universities beyond their names, I thought QUT sounded cool for IT and was locked in, but then the richest guy I knew gave a big speech about how UQ has all the prestige and his parents went there, and their parents etc, and I had to go there. I kind of regretted it in retrospect, QUT seems like it would have been more modern)

Edit: I just remembered that out of the few people I knew doing law at UQ, they are all now well employed. The few I knew who went to QUT are still looking for jobs a year out. Could be an individual thing, but I know one of these unemployed guys was a very hard worker and even worked 30+ hour weeks the whole way through.

UQ is full of twats fo sure, I think doing uni straight out of school isn't necessarily a great idea. I got a lot more out of it when I was older and I'm only 26.

I don't even know what 7 means. Our GPA is out of 4.0 :-/ I think I got 3.5 or something - whatever, it was enough for Honours First Class.

I have heaps of lawyer friends; some went to QUT, some went to UQ. Almost all of them are in top-tier firms regardless of their school, because they're all cainers and worked their asses off.

There is no contest. The TC Beirne School of Law.

I studied there and by the end I was so disgusted with the profession I didn't become one. But I do know the law now so that helps.

I started Law at QUT. It wasn't for me. The lecturers seemed disinterested and boring as f***. It could just be that Law clearly was never for me and I wasn't going to like it anywhere I went. I have some friends who have done it at UQ and they seemed to really enjoy it.

I did science and now med at UQ, in my opinion the atmosphere s***s all over QUT.

I did law at UQ, and dropped out after one semester. I can only assume it sucked balls at QUT as well though

I'm sure you're being faecitious but GPS school (ie BBC, Nudgee, Churchie, TSS et al).

From what I've heard in the profession, it doesn't really matter where you go so much as the individual (as trog said, cainers = win, nonchalants = lose. UQ is a much better theoretical school, however they don't do any compulsory legal research subjects (QUT do 2). QUT also work advocacy into their subjects whereas UQ don't.

So, QUT = practical application of law as it stands
UQ = appreciation of where it's coming from, where it is, and where it's going.

I went to a GPS school, I'm just saying I found a lot more kids with their heads up their asses at UQ compared with the year a spent at Griffith. I also made some awesome friends at UQ while I was doing IT there, but in the year I studied Law there I met some of the biggest twats I've run across. Also I was young and probably placed more emphasis on trying to make friends with other kids or something so I had more inane conversations rather than just head down bum up get the work done attitude.

All the schools have their advantages and disadvantages. I think both are good, if you're really serious about law then the best advice is to pick one of the two and get super involved in extra-curricular law society stuff while you're there. Particularly s*** like mooting, pro-bono advocacy etc law firms lap that s*** up.

While trying to help a law grad find a job last year, I was speaking to my sister-in-law a fair bit, who has worked at two firms since graduating, and another friend from UQ. They both told me being a hard worker doesn't mean too much when it comes to trying to get a start in that industry, it's all about having connections to get you into a firm in the first place. I'm sure it's not an absolute rule, but it seems to be a particularly unfriendly industry if you don't have connections.

they care a whole lot more about work experience in the field and gpa than mooting/law society gayness. nerf is right, connections are king.

At my vacation and eventual grad interview at a certain firm that will remain nameless I was told that "we look at what your existing networks are, what work you can bring into the firm immediately? Those who can attract work will get the job. We don't care that its family connecitons, or old boys associations. Bills are bills."
