Topic: 5 Games that need to be remade

I can't be the only one who has a list of kick ass games that we remember from what I consider some of the best in PC gaming history. Every one of these I remember playing hours on end and loving every moment of it and yet none of these has had a recient addition and doesn't seem like there ever will be.

Blood
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8967/bloodim.jpg

Every FPS fan should remember this if they were gaming back in the day. This still remains my most favorite shooter yet and even today is hard as a mother f***er to finish on harder difficulties. Caleb's black humor and array of various weapons were perfectly suited to the style of the game. You had Duke who was a smart ass, and Caleb who was a brutal psychopath. Being able to kick zombie heads around, playing mini games at the carnival level, the secret shopping mall level were all just so much fun. Oh and quotes from the Evil Dead series were just the icing on the cake.

Hexen
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/8417/dshexbig.png

One of the few fps games i've never finished due to the frustratingly insane puzzle difficulty. This game is f***ing hard and lets you know it. Fighting through a horde of fire/ice breathing monsters to activate a switch only to get a message of "A door has opened" will drive you nuts. I think this is the first of few FPS games that have a class based main character where you can choose who you want to be. Shame each guy only had 4 weapons and was pretty much exactly the same strength as the others.

Hexen 2
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/2403/hexen2.gif

This could well be in the same space as Heretic but if either of these games gets another title in the series I will be over the moon. I like this one more too. Taking Heretic's puzzles and softening them down just a little made it much more enjoyable for me. Each level having vastly different design and time periods and enemies was so awesome at the time. Not to mention it looked cool as, back when the Quake 2 engine was the s***. Again I never finished this game as the final area was way beyond my skill at the time. I gotta try and get this working on my new system.

Constructor
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/25/constructor.jpg

Not many may know this but god damn this was a fun game. Building neighborhoods and keeping everything running smoothly, while turning a profit was hard work. Having to put up with tenants complaining about bathrooms not being pretty enough and dealing with the roaming biker gangs trashing houses (not to mention jason mask wearing, chainsawing maniacs who destroyed fences) sent by rival players was so much fun. Having to pick the right houses, layouts, house upgrades and then the people who finally live in the house was so damn fun! Almost like The Sims without all the boring s*** added to it.

Dungeon Keeper
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/9711/dungeonkeeper.jpg

Anyone who has played this will agree with me here I think. This is 1 of the greatest games ever IMO and a damn shame it's doomed to never see a third in the series. Playing as the bad guys for once was so refreshing and a pretty big twist on things. Having to carve out dungeons for your minions so they are all happy and content was a ball. Dumping enemies (or even your own people) in your torture chamber was always my favorite. Hearing them scream while your mistresses whipped them was always a good thing. Even better though was killing an enemy invasion and then using the bodies to turn into vampires and skeletons. There NEEDS to be another one of these games... if to be the only game on the list to get 1 final installment.

Any ideas on what you guys would like to see another of?

They need to remake a decent Rainbow Six game.

The original + Rogue Spear were f***ing sick, just needs updated graphics and all the new AI technology and we're good to go.

Rogue Spear had the perfect formula, it's just lacking the AI.

I remember spending ages making maps for Hexen/Heritic2 to play on the computers at School.

One Epic map had a Pig Maze in it (to get 1 part for an unlock to the super weapon. If you made any more then 1-2 wrong turns you would un-Pig in the maze and die :) Was a little bit cheaty I spose, but everyoen that played learned the path pretty quick.

DK (and to a slightly lesser extent DK2) is one of my all time favorite games. Would be absolutly awesome if they could make another one. Is Bullfrog still around?

Syndicate/Syndicate Wars would be awesome too. Even a working copy of the old games would be awesome!

Ah your right fpot. My bad. Fixed it now though. Since I have both Hexen's in the list though mabye I should of added another old game instead. Bah oh well too lazy to fix it now. Far as I know bullfrog aint around anymore but they sold the rights to someone before they did. Same with blood, Atari have the rights to it. And it's the only game using the Build engine that doesn't have a port of it like Duke3d and Shadow Warrior do because monolith lost the source code to it somehow. At least thats what I read somewhere.

Didnt bullfrog also make a strategy game called Populous? aim of the game was to build up your tribe and eventually turn your shaman into god or something.

Bullfrog made quite a few of the games people ITT are reminising about.
They made 3 Populous games.

Some quick googleing tells me that EA bought them out, well there goes any hope of that.

i agree whol heartedly with constructor and dungeon keeper... those games were f***ing awesome, i spent hours with constructor, the humour was f***ing awesome and the animations and graphics were lulz.

dungeon keeper 2 was pretty f***ing sick, i played it again about a year ago and had a hoot, was good for some lan battles aswell.

id like to see theme hospitol remade but they would probably f*** it up and turn it into something stupid.

Abso-f***ing-lutely... this! Apparently it's on some European developers list of things to write, but I think it's gone back onto the backburner. I'd track down the website, but I'm behind the work firewall atm.

Also, a prettier version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe. I still play this regularly with using OpenTTD. It's the only game that has stayed on my HDD ever since I er... had a HDD. Easily the most re-playable yet simple game I've ever played. I think with a boost in the graphics department, some smarter AI, and this would be another huge hit.

Also the DK games definitely. Another example of simple mechanics and tons of re-playability.

never liked duke 1 & 2 side scrollers, i think by that time i'd played side scrollers to death on nearly every platform. Duke3D was one of the finest early FPSes, and i would argue the best DOS game ever.

Gargh this thread bought back memories.

Hexen II was a bit beyond me when I was young but I had so much fun with cheats and god mode back in the day, still one of the more imaginative games I've ever played.

I remember loving the Heretic II demo, may have to check it out when I get home
http://www.azt-ev.de/MorphOS_Screens/MorphOS1_4_Screens/heretic2_b.jpg

MatchFixa - Populous the Beginning was the final in the series and the only one I ever played, another oldie that needs to be remade. The same people went on to make the Black and White series which were fun but lacked the comical destruction of summoning an angel of death or volcano in an enemy town...
http://strategygalore.nodblog.com/files/2008/11/populous-3-city.png

Also agree on the Twinsen games, also very epic. I still have the music to the 2nd game which takes me back to the ridiculous amount of time I spent running around on the gas planet.

The other games I'd love to see are Thief 1 & 2 (not so old, and I guess thief 4 has been announced...)
http://ui28.gamespot.com/635/thiefgarrettdt_2.jpg
and The Settlers 2, an amazing economy game (Which was basically remade a few years ago anyway, but I missed the original artistic style).
http://nag.tidemedia.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/settlers2-01.jpg

Edit: Had to throw in Quest for Glory, an epic 5-parter that shared the King's Quest engines, but had combat and leveling up.

EA actually released a new Populous game on the DS, similar in style to the first two games.

I'm a f***ing massive geek, but I'd like to see the original "Gold Box" SSI games like Pool of Radiance remade without radically changing the combat gameplay, just facelift the interface and world etc.

I really liked the turn-based combat and its been missing in the D&D-based titles since - stop-pause doesn't cut it. Stuff like positioning really mattering, being able to properly block a doorway with fighters.

You need to have a certain sort of geek-brain to like that sort of thing though I guess, and it might be just a rose-glasses thing anyway..

Yes to Hexxen, Yes to Dungeon Keeper.

Better games to remake though:
Leisure Suit Larry 2.
Wing Commander 1-2.
Commander Keen 5.
Kings Quest 6.

Games which have had sequals that are really remakes but can still be done better:
Sim City 4.
Warcraft 2.
Dragons Lair :)

Would be absolutly awesome if they could make another one. Is Bullfrog still around?

Bullfrog is basically Lionhead these days, Peter Molyneux was the guy behind Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Syndicate, Magic Carpet etc. Now he's just f***ing around with Natal and Fable.

Final Fantasy 7 really needs to get remade, they would make a killing out of it. Also battletoads as long as they turn the difficulty down a bit.

i would love to see a longer twinsen's odyssey with updated graphics. everything else about the game (open 3d world, 3rd person) doesn't really need to be changed that much to still be considered a good game.

Yeah two actually, though I heard the second wasn't as good. Also an original series using the same engine which I need to check out if I can handle the early 90s first person graphics... Eventually there were 3 books based on the games which were retroactively added to the series, but I skipped them on the way through.

+1 to all of the above, however today's ADD kids just don't like turn based games so it would most likely bomb. About the best you can do is try to source all the awesome turn based games that were made around 20 years ago.

IIRC there was also a Pool of Radiance namesake game made into 3D as an attempt to bring the series up to date gameplay wise but it was ended up as utter s***e.

as far as made_for_pc games go i'll have to throw my vote in for the dungeon keeper series also

also dk2 for best song in a game ever with disco inferno when someone hit the jackpot in the casino.

was black and white (sort of) meant to be a continuation of the dk stuff? they were ok games, but molyneaux really s***s me and made me think theyll never be as good as he'd lead you to believe

This is gonna sound wierd and it's not particular old school, but I don't reckon they've made a better jedi game than jedi knight 2, the multiplayer experience was fantastic, I would really like to play a game like that again, but I haven't been particularly enthusiastic about any star wars game since.

Agreed on the final two Jedi Knight/Dark Forces games, I was actually playing those last night. The animation and combat is still amazing.

For those interested in the old quest for glory games, it seems a dedicated group has gone to the effort of fully recreating QFG2 (the only one that was never remade in the point-and-click icon engine used in the later king's quest games) and it actually looks incredibly well done, cutscenes and all. There's a trailer available: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFRJAlMg6P0 and you can find it here http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/qfg2/homepage/homepage.html

Rise of the Triad was the game I was thinking of

you know what else was awesome, f***s me if I can remember the name of it but i'll try to describe it
you had an overview of these 4 guys who all had some pretty serious fire power, you could jump in these hover cars and cruise to your next slaughter mission etc

thats about all I remember, it was 3.11/dos6/maybe early 95 days

I was hoping for a remake of Bubble Bobble for PC, HD with proper TCP/IP. That would be a really really cool time-killer. Unfortunately they remade that for the DS recently so you can't just dev out a rip of it and expect to get away with selling it.

Re Dune 2: Apparently Command and Conquer 4's gameplay style will be more reminiscent of Dune 2 (and Generals), than C&C1-3.

And the first Quest for Glory title was remade by Sierra, around the time of QFG3. Features remade 256 colour backgrounds and a full point and click interface.

Game nostalgia is awesome. :)

I'd say "remake Death Track 2000" except that it was remade, and released last year. Unfortunately, it mostly sucked. :(

They really need to make more Roller Coaster Tycoon games. I don't think that series has even come close to it's potential.

I always wanted a sequel to "Fatal Racing / Whiplash"

Was the first car game that blew my mind back in 1995, the stunts & racing was awesome. & the game had so many features it was ridiculous, plus its still the only racing game i've played where team tactics were involved.

Dune 2 didn't have network support *sigh*
Dune 2000 was practically a remake of Dune II, and it added network support. There's also Emperor: Battle for Dune.

The Incredible Machine

This was SO awesome. I finished it back in the day but it took me a while. Your screenshot looks nothing like how I remember the game though. This is the one I clocked:

Every time they try to remake The Incredible Machine it just doesn't turn out as good. There were about 5 sequels and plenty of spin offs like 'Crazy Machines' etc.

The original was and is the best in the genre.

Burried away on an old dvd I cracked out last night looking for some oldies, I found this compilation that has Ultimate doom, Doom 2, Doom 2 TNT, Doom 2 Plutonia, Doom 64, Hexen, Hexen exp pack, Hexen 2, Hexen 2 exp pack, Heretic, Heretic 2 and Strife. All GL versions, all with no errors which runs from a custom game launcher and which works perfectly on windows 7 64bit. f***ing great stuff. This will keep me busy for ages. Trying to finally finish Heretic now. Never have since its a long ass game. Like 8 or so levels per episode and there are around 7 of them.

Crusader: No Remorse and Raptor: Call of the shadows. I used to play Crusader & Raptor for hours when I got home from school and I still play Raptor occasionally through DosBox. I tried to play Crusader a few months ago but the controls just feel wrong & weird, plus the colours kept going all funky :(

edit: Need for Speed SE was good but I always liked NFS2 SE.

Come to think of it, I'd love a remake of the original red alert & red alert 2. Keep the games exactly as they are gameplay wise but update the graphics. I made an awesome LAN multiplayer map for RA & RA2 that would see us building little bases on islands and then taking to the seas for an epic oceanic battle for supremacy.

f*** yeah, so many good titles in here (blood was a really good one). some other games id like to see..

x-wing vs tie fighter
Interstate 76
apache vs havoc (f*** i spent time on this game)
ignition - was good fun (i actually still have this with a 3DFX patch haha)
mechwarrior 2 (even if it was a direct clone game play wise but just had sick crysis style graphics. couldnt think of a better game to come out.. i would pay up to $150 for it)
descent 2 remake
KKND - i enjoyed this for a while.
Total Annilation.

rFactor 2 & homeworld 3 would be nice

That would be nice, but largely impractical since the majority of the development companies that made the games in this thread have either gone out of business or have been swallowed up by Activision or EA.

Running the classics through DOSBox or VMWare usually yields results that are good enough. I've noticed in recent months that this is the way a lot are being packaged for sale on Steam/GOG etc, bundled with DOSBox and a custom tweaked dosbox.conf file.

I hear where you're coming from - but it's one thing to say 'update the graphics' but that means changing all the textures, writing pixel and vertex shaders, memory management, high-poly models (might even be impossible based on their previous technology and file formats) etc, etc.

You'd find that you would have to re-write about 70-80% of the code base at a guess I reckon. Only really generic stuff like AI, path-finding and so on would be spared.

That doesn't even touch on the huge improvements in compiler technology. Even if they stuck to C/C++ portable coding rules it might even be a big task just to compile the original code base for those 15+ yo games.

- Thexder

- LHX Attack Chopper

- Thief 1 and 2 (already mentioned)

- HalfLife 1 (heard there was a remake on the way - haven't seen it yet)

- Quake 1 (yes as in not 2 or 3 or 4 or that ridiculous QW bastardisation). ID remade Doom and Wolfenstein.. that's the idea

- DISCWORLD

- Did someone say that Stunts was remade already yet?

- Deus Ex 1/2

- LSL.. I want to see Leisure Suit Larry in stereo 3D goodness all over again

- Monkey Island - yes I know they remade number one... MORE!

- Team Fortress 1 (yes a remake of the oldschool Quake mod)

Action Quake 2 doesnt need to be remade

Everyone just needs to be forced to play it

I'll agree to disagree. It shat to me to tears to learn the hand that the creator of Counter Strike had in that piece of work. I felt bad hearing he abandoned the project after the haxors got too much to deal with.. kinda

I guess he is a household name now -ish

A remake of Archon.

There is a s*** remake floating around but I think a major developer needs to take Archon to a higher level.

A new version with 3D graphics and team based Multiplayer would be awesome in my opinion.

Many awesome games in this thread, here's my list:

Any of the AD&D Gold Box games from the Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance settings
Any of the Eye of the Beholder series as well
X-COM: UFO Defense (even though it's stupidly hard even on the lower difficulty settings
The Bard's Tale

Thrust (Thrust Deluxe is a pretty good remake)
Lander (Psygnosis) kind of like Descent with proper gravity
Hot Rod (from the C64) wiki
Frontier: Elite II or First Encounters
Ultima Underword I or II (Arx Fatalis is pretty close reimagining, but a bit glitchy)
Any of the old Infocom text adventure settings in a more modern style like they did with 'Return to Zork'
The Elder Scrolls: Redguard!
Virtua Tennis wiki
Hidden and Dangerous
Super Bomberman - multitap optional :D
Midtown Madness
Desert Strike/Jungle Strike/Urban Strike were pretty cool
Rock 'n Roll Racing was indeed awesome (one of the early Blizzard games too!) ...the stage is set, the green flag drops!...*BLACK SABBATH INTRO*

Pfft, Research Laser Rifles ASAP. Then make 10 or so. After that start the Laser Pistol Trade. The sale of hundreds of Laser Pistols funded all my bases haah. Get Flying Power Armour when you can too, Then the Blaster Bomber for busting holes in UFO walls/roof Taking out the Command center where those pesky psychic aliens are ftw!

EDIT: O you have to make sure your Blaster Bomb carrier has excellent Will power and only carries 1 shot and has the to pick up the rest. Those are nasty when the Enemy take over...

Awesome! Bomberman Live looks like the most faithful adaptation so I'll have to give that one a try.

Yep, I got into the Laser Rifles and after that it's a tad easier. The first few missions seem to be really hard as your squad are complete noobs with s*** guns but as they advance in rank the sorties get better.
Ta for the tip on the laster pistols, guides say medkits are good to sell as well. The psychic aliens are annoying!!

Have they released anything yet? Still waiting...

From the FAQ:
Q. When will Black Mesa be released?
A. We have always gone for a "when it's done" approach. We have however commited to releasing in the year 2009.

Not like the devs are getting paid for it. Do you have to buy it to play it? No. If they prefer to release a complete mod when it's done, I will respect that, especially since it looks amazing from the screenshots and videos.

Nothing wrong with a "when it's done" approach if it's not their day job. I was amused that since 2009 has come and gone it doesn't look like they were as committed as they thought they were. :)

imo quake doesn't need a remake... it's been remade a few times... glquake, proquake, equake, tenebrae quake. the latest fuhquake has 32bit textures n coloured lighting n shaders n bs.

as for ufo-enemy unknown... i doubt a modern remake would be able to match the eerie feel of the original.. the horror of seeing a half-lit beanhead (sectoid) by a unit that's at the end of it's time units ;p i still have a game of xcom going ;p

i made a forced evolution where i would hit my max-soldiers count n get them all psi tested. anyone who ranked below 90 for psionic strength is killed & eventually i ended up with an 'a' team consisting of 30units all with 100 psionic strength & over 100 psionic skill. these guys never leave the dropcraft.. they just take control of all the aliens minds... march the controlled aliens upto the dropcraft n 1 soldier mows em all down :D

i could have destroyed the brain ages ago... but that ends the game! :P

guys most of the games u list have been kept going in sequels, and some sequels were better than the originals.
or like UFO/xcom series have been made to run on new systems. ..
"In September 2008, UFO Defense, Apocalypse, Interceptor, and Enforcer were re-released with support for Windows XP and Windows Vista"

Rock and Roll racing should be remade.
Crusader series needs to be ressurected.
Chaos Engine also could be redone.

Not all games that need remakes/revivals, some just need good sequels!

- Final Fantasy VIII
My fave game of all time. Square should do a VII/VIII/IX re-release trilogy!
- Sheep, Dog n' Wolf
Cool looney tunes game for PS1. A sequel would (probably not) be awesome!
- Twisted Metal
'nuff said.
- Timesplitters
They'd better release TS4. And in the same style as 2/3. No next-gen brown bull.
- Theme Park/Theme Park World
Or even another Rollercoaster Tycoon. But Theme Park had more style.
