I'm about ready to launch this @#$% D-Link 504t heap of s*** into orbit.
Randomly drops port forward settings etc. Menu is a slow heap of s*** that sometimes just fails to respond/only resolve is to manually pull the power on the router and plug back in. Preferably a router with wireless capability for use with my laptop around the house. But otherwise PC connected via CAT5. Trying to set up port forwards again (that would only take 10 seconds if it didn't crash itself/menu take 10 minutes to update ONE change) has taken me nearly 2 hours just because D-Link routers are useless as s***. Cheers. |

Are these recommendations from you guys who frequently do port forwarding and such?
- Is the menu responsive? - Does the router reset quickly ? - Does the router randomly soft reset? - Randomly drop port forward settings etc? - Wireless capability? Y/N Just a few of the things I'm sort of looking for. Cheers again. |

Yeah, I still have an Optus cable modem (motorola I think) so I would need it to operate as a router.

7300g is less powerful... if you use torrents a lot, lots of connections will get it bogged down.
I use the 7800N. Its a beast. Is the OP actually looking for modem inbuilt? If not - I'd have a look at the Apple Airport Extreme. Very sexy, works really well, and isn't too expensive. |

we use an airport extreme. it's amazing having a router that doesn't screw up - no dropping wireless, no random screw-ups requiring a power cycle! and -N wireless is sexy fast / range, and of course gigabit.
I've been through netgear, belkin, linksys, and I know what you mean.. it sucks how flaky most routers are. I haven't tried billion though - so it sounds like that'd be my next attempt/recommendation - but I just looked up a comparable router and it is $70 more than this one - so they'd be the budget choice for people happy with 802.11g. Another thing to note is there's no http interface for admin - instead you use a windows/os x app. Unconventional, but very sexy to use. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/148219/airport-utility.png |

there's no http interface for admin - instead you use a windows/os x app That would be the kind of reason I'd avoid it myself. Routers should be able to be accessed from any device with a TCP stack and a browser, regardless of platform and without needing anything extra. The Billion 7404 range is pretty damn good. Good for novices, but has enough features to keep the more advanced users happy. |

Billion is the way to go!
I have 7404VN So it does Voip 3g and Wireless N and its awesome doesnt miss a beat and i have around 6 wireless devices and 4 LAN connections I just bought for small company the Billion 7300N and its awesome as well... Easy to setup does wireless N and it costs $150. took 2mins to setup and i didnt have to do any restarts to it... with 7300N i had to also change a few settings change the IP address and disable DHCP. When i have tired doing this on Dlinks and Netgrears and belkins i would always have problems with this and would have to factory restart cause would always get confused... with this router i change the ip address then type in the new ip address and it was there no reboot at all! last edited by TiT at 13:13:45 13/Jan/10 |

Sounds like a 7404 is overkill for me.
All I want is something to plug in that supports at least 2 LAN and 2 wireless) and forget about. The wireless is mainly just internet so not high traffic/volume stuff. 7300g might get the nod. |

Sounds like a 7404 is overkill for me. When Moses climbed to the top of Mount Sinai (fact) did God give him three commandments? Or five commandments? No, he gave that motherf***er TEN commandments on a massive marble tablet that he had to carry the f*** back down the mountain. 7404. Do it. Wow. I should be in advertising. |

What's the benefit? I don't get this. Is this like a router in a PCI card or what? How does it handle nailed-up connections? |

Yeah I was running a an rta1320 which was a temp measure until I got my 877, the viking was used in a cpe fixup. But I bet it will spark your curiosity, beside the manual explains it in detail, actually would have to be the best manual for a dsl product I have ever read

I know what you mean with the 504T. Probably the least cooperative router in the world. I have one of those at home along with a DI-524 for wireless. The 524 isn't as bad as the 504t but still has its moments. For work we use the Billion 7300N at all our office installs. It has a great interface that is very responsive, it's great with port forwarding, has the least troubles with wireless dropouts so far... basically no issues with it.

I gave my dlink router to my mate, he used it for about a year and then gave it back :( I now use it as nothing more than a 4 port switch. I love my WRT54G with tomato firmware, there's more options than you can poke a stick at and the content filtering is awesomesauce.

I got a linksys wrt320n, maybe should have gotten the model up for dual simultaneous radio but was double the price. The cable modem feeds 90Mbit internet to the linksys, the ethernet can handle it, mixed mode wireless including N maxes at ~30Mbits, n only in 5ghz maxes at 50Mbits. Performance ok'ish but lately it has been freezing being unresponsive so cant recomend it at all for reliability.

I've had 2 x Netgear routers, 1 linksys and 1 D-Link. The first netgear was awesome but 4 port switch packed up after 7 years of use. 2nd netgear router only still kickin on after 5 years very reliable Linksys router is around 6 years old as well works great only had wireless drop out once that required a reboot. Only problem with it is had a little querk of needing to be rebooted twice if phone line gets DC and then reconnected. Still using it now. The D-Link lasted less then one day and im not joking. Print server on the thing never worked and after a few hours the 4-port switch was completely dead. When I returned it there was another guy there doing the same with the same router. I switched it for the 2nd netgear router i have. As far as im concerned you should be happy with anything as long as its not a D-Link :) |

I use a Cisco 877 and they're great little units. Very reliable, easy to configure, lots of debugging functionality and they don't need to be rebooted for config changes. If you need wireless there is a Cisco 877w model but AFAIK it's a little flakey. Though I haven't really played with them at all. Only issue I've had with my 877 (and I wouldn't believe it if someone told me) was that it literally lost its config one day. We had a power outage and the thing had a default startup config when it was powered back up. It reconfigured ok and I've never had it happen again. |

If you need wireless there is a Cisco 877w model but AFAIK it's a little flakey. Though I haven't really played with them at all. I've got 3 x 877's and 1 x 877w+m all of them are rock solid, the 877w is an 877 with an extra dot11radio interface basically, it's no more or less reliable than the non-W model there is also the Cisco 527W which is coming out very shortly, more of a residential grade unit than the 877 which is aimed at small business (but they'll tell you the 527W is for small business and the 877 is for medium sized, whatevs) I can't find much on the tubes about it but my dudes at Cisco assure me it's coming to Australia within the next quarter http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=8872 |
