A big day for the Mozilla Messaging team today with the official release of Thunderbird version 3.0! The new version of this popular open source email client has a bunch of new features, including a new tabbed-based interface, improved search with advanced filtering tools, mail account wizard (very helpful for getting set up quickly with free services like GMail), and stacks more - check the release notes for the full list.

If you're running a 2.x release you can auto-update to the new version, or you can download the full installer for Windows, Mac OS X or Linux now locally from AusGamers.

As always, be warned before you upgrade that some of your add-ons that might stop working - most notably Lightning, the calendar component. If you rely on Lightning you'll need to install the Nightly Updater add-on. The Google Calendar provider also broken for me.

If someone tries this out please let me know how it compares to Postbox.

It's f***ing slowwwwwwwwwwww to index and it really hammers your PC making it almost unusable with all the IO. Pretty lame; they should have done it like Google Desktop and only index when your PC is idle.

I don't have any Windows indexing stuff installed or running - 99.9% sure it's just the new native thunderbird indexer.

It's finished and I'm hating on the new search results page :(

edit: actually I've figured it out already; that default search page only comes up if you're doing an 'everything' search, which is on by default. If you change to sender/subject it operates like it used to.

I stopped using thunderbird ages ago because every so often Microsoft would change something at hotmail/live and Thunderbird wouldn't be able to access my mail until some 3rd party guy updated his webmail plugin.

These days I just use windows live mail to check my ISP/hotmail/gmail boxes and, to use a cliche it "just works"

Thanks for the heads up trog - I tried updating from 2.0 with the menu but got "your Thunderbird is up to date" so I just downloaded it from the web site. Installed over the top of 2.0 seemed to work fine.

If you absolutely like the new interface (as I do), but simply detest the Web 2.0 dumbification that seems to have crept into the capitalisation on the message header bar i.e. reply, forward, archive, junk, delete, 'other actions'
then perhaps leave a comment here complaining about it so that this UI bug is reopened.

In the meantime, it can be fixed by shutting down Thunderbird and following these steps:

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\chrome
2. Find the file 'en-GB.jar' (or en-US.jar if you have the US English version)
3. Make a copy of this file in case it gets screwed up by this process
4. Rename en-GB.jar to en-GB.zip and extract it using 7-Zip or the like
5. Find the two files 'msgHeaderViewOverlay.dtd' and 'multimessageview.dtd' - in my case they were in the folder: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\chrome\en-GB\locale\en-GB\messenger
6. Open these two files up in a half decent text editor (anything other than Notepad)
6. Replace the lower case strings with whatever you want & save the files
7. Use 7-Zip to recreate the en-GB.zip file again using NO COMPRESSION
Also Important: the "locale" folder should be in the root folder of the zip file or Thunderbird won't start correctly!
8. Rename en-GB.zip to en-GB.jar and start Thunderbird

I thought I was the last person hanging on to a mail client, and I got rid of my thunderbird client about 3 years ago. I use gmail... on the web. I can send teh mails, recieve teh mails, and find teh mails.

Aww man, if even crusty old Mantra is on the Gmail I feel REALLY old!

Gmail cant read my employer's email account

If you, like me, were wondering what happens to "Archived" mail and gave up searching the help website, then here's what happens - basically when you click Archive for the first time it makes a new "archive" special folder with a 2009 subfolder.

*sigh* Lightning doesn't work.

+1 to using webmail interfaces. I suppose if you're on the go and need to have all of your mail available offline... but Gmail has an option to do that now too.

Another big advantage of using Thunderbird with Gmail is it backs everything up.

bit of a revival here but what the f*** @ Thunderbird 3
It is leaking memory like a sieve, any time I try to compose a new message it will just keep leaking memory until it eventually crashes and I basically have to reboot
I can start it fresh, open a new message and within 2 minutes it's using 150MB of memory

anyone else experienced problems since 2 -> 3?

I have found 3 to be great. A lot quicker in fact and the new layout.

it just kills my pc

mine's sweet as at home and work
the new account creation wizard/dialogue thingo is pretty gay, but that's the only negative I've had so far

mine does use 170+mb of ram tho, but that seems pretty normal for mozilla software

Right now, while trying to compose a new message
if I click somewhere to type on a different line, it lags out for 3-4 seconds before moving the cursor there

This is beyond a joke, I can't get any work done like this
I've literally had to fire up outlook (I run it with the same IMAP servers just so I can reply to meeting requests) to get anything done

I want my Thunderbird 2 back ;(

maybe mine was still indexing, I did install it back when this thread first popped up but I rebooted for the first time today

I was having issues with mail doubling up. I would get 2 copies of everything in my mailbox from time to time. It was very annoying.

Hehe yeah so did I when I found it too. I was just trawling back in the archives for any old email but finding one with that old list tag line was just a bonus. :D

Actually I just had a resurgence of a problem I've had a couple times - 100% cpu usage out of nowhere. Only way I can fix it is to close tbird and restart it. I assume its related to indexing but it doesn't say "indexing" in the status bar so not really sure what's causing it, but it sure is annoying.

hell yes it is, mines been ok since I left it open all weekend on my work machine though
