I have a real urge to play a mech game, like mech 3 or heavy gear. Anything come out in the last 5 years that rivals these?

cheers

You know that they are remaking Mech Warrior?
There was a link to it a while back on here somewhere.

the best part of mech 3 was incorporating salvaging items. It meant when you came up against a big ass mech you didnt just blow it up, u took out the cockpit alone. or if you liked a gun, u shot off the arm etc. I hope they incorporate that and the mobile field base into the new mech game

Mech Assault on xbox was; although pretty lame was okay for a quick fix.

I too love Mech 3 and games alike, they're also making a crysis mod in the mech universe, you can check it out here

The Armored Core games perhaps? Any of the relatively few half decent Gundam games if you don't mind the Japanese style mechs.

MechAssault was more arcade-y, if you're after something like that you could try War World.

Mechwarrior 4 was meant to be getting a free re-release, but at last glance some Microsoft related nonsense was holding it up.. Here's hoping they get it sorted out, as Mech4: mercs was hell fun.

They seem like such a terrible weapons platform.

It seems like they would suffer in maneuverability against aircraft

if they were real

So why do we still have warships and tanks in theatres today?

Sorry to revive this almost dead thread (dont hurt me trogzor) but i wanted to bring to everyones attention the AWSOME mechs that appear in the firm AVATAR... im not sure the movie will be good (typical sci-fi movie ruined by romance, sigh) but the mechs and shiz look awsome.

I agree that mechs from mechwarrior 2 would have been a bit lol in battle. A mech should be a suite someone wears, that gives you bonus movement and ability to your normal stuff... eg jump higher, do ground rolls, jumpboots/jetpack etc etc etc

f*** that was an awesome game. Twas awesome running around in a mech and then changing in to a tank. Plus the FPS side of it was also very good indeed.

i think mechs would be a good weapons platform... as long as they aren't like they are in mech warrior games! ;p if they were able to :-
* strafe!!!!
* use multiple targeting for weapons mounted on independently controlled sections (ie: left arm, right arm, head & chest). (obviously hard to emulate in a pc games).
* had a wheeled mode for speed when there are roads about.
* could pickup heavy objects to use as mobile shields.
& other cool stuff that having legs & arms lets you! :P

also props to the district9 mech. it ruled. :D

You could strafe, the legs moved independantly of the body iirc.

Of course i havn't played the games since like 2000

Someone posted a video of a new mech type game here a while ago? It was 2 mechs battling in a city...

I reckon anyone trying to pitch a tank force against the US these days would get smoked by their air superiority.

Did any of the old mech games have aircraft? can't ' remember.

That's not what I was saying at all.

Air superiority is probably the single greatest asset in the modern battlefield but you still need to put troops and armour on the ground to win wars take and hold territory. They call it 'air support' for a reason.

heh I'd actually written that in my post but I thought it was a bit too obvious to bother saying so deleted it :P

Then I had flashbacks to Harpoon and started Googling the latest Harpoon game to see if it looked cool... but it doesn't :(

Terrible weapons platform as depicted in the games, too short a range for their size and far too big to adequately use cover.

Maybe there is a reason in the games as to why they don't get spotted and destroyed by long range missiles fired from aircraft.

Slow, boring.

the mech series was about piloting and strategy, you couldnt just jump in and mash buttons like console boys.

Its just a game. It would be a pretty boring game if you had to wallow in setting up anti-air placements and space platforms before you got to drive around in your big robots and rip s*** up!

Macross ftw; air superiority AND mech action. There's the xbox game Robotech: Battlecry, though it's full of cheese it's pretty fun.

Yeah, you could even hire an Aerospace Fighter to join your lance in MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries.

As quite a few of the mechs had missile batteries, i assume that out ranges the missiles mounted on planes in that "universe". And wouldn't be too hard to back up either.
