hihi,

Ok i know i'm like 6 years behind the 6th season but i just finished watching the 1st season of OZ and i'm already hooked! similarly to how the prisoners are hooked on 'tits' - i.e. drugs.

I've always wondered what happens when you throw in the mafia, muslims, homeboy gangsters, latinos, Nazis, Irish and some fags into a prison block looked down upon by a corrupt higher power. It makes for an interesting but brutal social experiment depicting the epic struggle for respect, power and most important of all: survival.

The series so far goes to show that 'Emerald City' is anything but a rehabilitation center and is more like a breeding ground for hardcore criminals, which is pretty much the case for all prisons if you ask me.

Besides full frontal male nudity, defecation on other inmates, homosexual rape, mutilation (dick in a box) and some intense executions I've seen some messed up s*** in season 1 and i'm sure there's plenty more to come. What's even more disturbing is that all of the above is perhaps just a fraction of what really happens behind the walls of a maximum security prison. Perhaps the events may seem exaggerated and a lil far fetched to add effect, but one thing for sure it is damn entertaining.

Who would've thought that they refer to heroin as 'tits'.. "ima die man gimme some firm round tits maaaaaaaaaaaan!!"

The entire collection should be pretty cheap by now. If you have the stomach for that sort of content check it out if you haven't already done so.

This is the only TV series I've ever had to stop watching because I couldn't handle it.. I got to the end of Season 2 I think and had to give up. Awesome show but too hardcore for me

aw c'mon it's not that hardcore (well not yet anyway). Besides you need to prepare yourself in case one day you do end up somwhere like that, maybe due fraud or tax evasion as a result of all that QGL lewt, or even being setup by Khel in an attempt to topple you over and claim QGL supremacy.

Ive never seen it (( sounds very interesting indeed
They used to show it on SBS. I saw one or two episodes ages ago but only decided to follow up on it recently. I'm not even into watching tv series (i think the only TV series i watched from start to finish was Fresh Prince of Bel Air haha) but I've been more motivated to watch this than Prison Break.

I stopped watching Oz in season 4. Got over it.

+1 for the wire, definitely one of the top series. It didn't drag on for too long either (4 seasons).

Oz is in my top 5 too. It's very good. It struggled near the end with stupid dream sequences, but all up it still gets the awesome tag.

I held off for about 5 months after getting the last 2 seasons of the wire because I knew once they were done it'd be over, cracked them out over the last two weekends, as expected awesome. Have not seen OZ so might give it a go.

Reminds me.. Mad Men is very good, but is a drama.

Damages is also very good for a thriller. It's actually the only thriller I can think of. The ending to season 2 knocks it out of top5 contention, but it is worth your time.

The latest one that just ended, got really really really boring. But they saved it (at least for me) in the last EP. Quite looking forward to the next season now.

^ at the end of the day, tv is an escape....
what are you doing in your life that you need meth amphetamine production, prison rape etc, to escape?

overall feel of these shows is so same same as well......
alright shows that dont require the harping on about.
and i dont think pimping oz is a good look imo.....

I had to take breaks from Oz too, but I got through eventually. It got a bit melodramatic at times but I loved the commentary on prisons and the nature of man.

TV does not need to be an escape and a good story usually needs more than half an hour to conclude properly.

The Wire was the first example I saw of a series which effectively used TV to tell a story which couldn't be told as effectively using another medium.

i get over how people go on about these slow running shows that seem conceded with there intensity.................

There's a space for shows with higher aspirations than Two and a Half Men. If they come across as *conceited* to you well I guess it's on *their* heads.

What do you mean it's not a good look? not a good look for me cause i made a post about it?

I don't believe the show is trying to aimlessly glorify and condone that type of behavior. If anything, most of the time the show actually begins and ends on positive commentary despite all the nasty s*** you see on screen. I personally see the show as potentially being a bit of a wake up call for some. You do bad things then that's where you could end up where lots more bad things could happen to you.

Shows like this aren't science fiction, it portrays a slice of reality and each episode leaves you with different social issues to think about. 'If you were in that situation, what would you do?' question will keep popping up as you come across various scenario's and attempt to rationalize things according to your own ethical and moral judgment.

Plus it doesn't contain your typical good guy bad guy type of characters. Sometimes you're inadvertently left cheering for the murders/rapists/druggos because of the ill treatment the receive by the so called good guys who are coming to terms with their own sicknesses. They are corrupt, cheat on their spouses, have blood on their hands and smoke a blunt at the end of a hard stressful day at the penetionary to help them get through to the next day. It's all just one giant ball of messed up, and it makes for a good watch.

I agree most of the shows mentioned are great. After everyone was talking about how great breaking bad was tho, I decided to give the first season a watch and have to say I was disappointed. Maybe I was expecting too much but I just found it boring.

<3 good cable network dramas.

Oz was terrific and I feel sorry for anyone that isn't able to appreciate this kind of media - you're missing out. Lols at the bulls*** about tv as an escape meaning it should be all happy thoughts.

Sons of Anarchy is definitely the best currently running one imo.

Rome is still my fav of all time though.

to matchfixa,
nah, just how excited i am to watch another episode of said tv shows after watching the 1st couple of eps.....
these shows have that, bloke tv feel about them, which only works sometimes for me.
i like english tv mainly, and comedies i guess.

eastbound and down is a good american 'dark' comedy.
as for yanky dramas :- keen for the rest of 'virtuality' to come out.
others i enjoy are lost, weeds, the riches, nurse jackie, nip/tuck...
as i said, i like escapism without the dry reach thats on offer from oz et al.
and i too found 'breaking bad' a bit boring.

i watch too much downloaded tv content as it is, without suffering gritty hbo dramas.

and i get over shows that are 'cool' amongst the blokesquire.....
if zoo magazine raves about it......meh.....i wait til the hype dies down and smash every ep at once. i.e the sopranos.

diferent strokes for diferent folks. plus i just like winding up groganus for obvious reasons !!!!!!!!!!

so you'll watch an organised crime syndicate that puts on a nice front, but not an organise crime syndicate that is obviously all drugs and violence?

eastbound and down - thumbs up

lost - I still watch that s*** too, only because 'I've come this far!@!@#'
weeds - I am still watching this too (no idea why) it's turned to absolute s***, the first couple of seasons were awesome.

only briefly saw a few eps on tv of nip/tuck and the others I don't watch.

Mate some of the HBO shows are the best going, but as you say each to their own.

Also The Shield is awesome gritty drama/cop show, some episodes are just incredible and leave you hanging for the next ep.

the answer is in the question.
an ocs is expected to be all drugs and/or violence.
an ocs that puts on a nice front, well that sounds like a good idea for a tv show !!!!!

I've just been scoping out The Wire and it sounds like Awesome Town. I might have to checkout it out after i'm done with OZ.

I'm not even big on following TV series but this could be the start of something...

I've got all seasons of Prison Break. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it so far?
