Read this over on IT Wire

The Pirate Party, which evolved from cultural and legal skirmishes with authorities in Sweden and Germany, last week updated the Australian website it registered last year and advertised for a president, treasurer, secretary and supporting positions.

They need another 200 members to register as a political party and contest the next election. I'll join but when do I get my parrot?

The party, at this point in time, does not intend to develop policy or have official views on any issue or event outside of its primary focus of intellectual property rights and by extension, privacy issues related to current laws.

From their FAQ; http://pirateparty.org.au/faq

Their 1 and only political objective, at this point in time, is:

We seek to halt and deconstruct the digital feudalism which now pervades the market, the reform of legislation that is currently manipulated to protect obsolete business models and feudalistic copyright controls.

feudalistic copyright

This is a bit of an oxymoron isn't it? Pretty sure copyright wasn't really enforced in those times.

**EDIT: infi, I think you are seriously underestimating the stupidity of the population. Like someone I know that voted for Family First because they will put "families first" (I s*** you not, that was their reason). When I asked the person to tell me about the party's policies they couldn't name one. Then I rolled out the usual: are you aware they want to ban internet pornography? Or that they oppose euthanasia, abortion and cloning embryos for research? They are pretty major topics. How you could vote for a party without knowing their stance on such issues is beyond me.

we emerged out feudalism due to the evolution of civil property law. magna carta etc.

now they want property law unwound (or is it just free movies, software and music) so we can return to feudalism?

I would hope they would go after introducing a Net Neutrality Bill in Australia before our networks go the way of the states where providers block each other from access to content.

Their first mistake is their name. Aligning themselves with anarchic and nefarious seafaring groups acting above the law. That's a good move *sarcasm*

You'd do much better to call yourself 'The Communications Party' or something like that.

Oooh, Mass, 666th post.

should start a party called 'boobs party'... you'd probably get 90% of the ignorant party-name-voters! also... whether you won the election or not.. boobs.

when I was 18 I voted for Nigel Freemarijuana - never had heard of him before until I saw the ballot paper, and haven't heard of him since.
