Next week at the Australian Psychology Society's conference in Darwin, Dr Peer Forster will release his paper on people who play MMORPG and how they become part of a virtual community.

Here's the article from today's NT News:

It seems MMORPG players form 'clear social dimensions', and talk about stuff.

ex boyfriends brother is a loner. plays WoW non stop.. reckons that playing metalcore music, having vent on and raiding at the same time is "totally epic"

Oh wow, how bad do I feel because I can relate to this, haha.

I got sick of wow a long long long time before I actually quit, I think the only thing that prolonged it was some of the friendships I'd made along the way, and as most of them lived interestate the only way I'd really be able to interact was through the game.

Now that I've quit it all seems like a big joke/massive crock of s***, but I've been there so I know it's not. I don't think I would ever play it again though; someone recently bought me gametime trying to coax me back into it. I think I spent more time downloading and installing recent patches than actually playing, boring useless s*** is boring & s***.

Haha yep sounds like me, but I'd usually be s***faced at the same time, early last year I was so sick of the actual raiding but enjoyed hanging out with the guys drunk on vent that I'd drink most of a bottle of rum pretty much every raid night. And nights off raiding were few and far between.

These days most of them have quit as well, but we still get on vent of a night and talk s***, which suits me fine while I work. You never realise how much time you spent playing until you quit, and do lots of work & other activities and still find yourself bored trying to fill in that time. Last couple of weeks I've managed to finish most of the rest of this semesters work when I otherwise would've been raiding.

the thing is, you think you're enjoying the time you spend playing the game, then when u take a break and screw around with mates u realise how much better you are not playing the game. I had so much time on my hands i'd actively call people and be like bored.. lets do something instead of just waiting for people to call me every time.

Most people who I have seen get deep into a WoW addiction are actually pretty depressed people. They are most certainly not what I would consider happy. They get the social interaction, but the social interaction is bland and non-fulfilling. They get the feeling of achievement, but that again is non-fulfilling.

If they weren't addicted to WoW it would just be something else. It's an underlying problem that causes them to fall into the MMO world so heavily and only when they start to fix that will they come out of it.

Now I play Aion! WHEEEEEEEEE
