Topic: Internode talks up PPC-1

Yeah yeah, its going to be awesome, we get it.

Internode said the connection would carry as much as one third of its international data traffic when launched on October 8.

The bit I thought you might be interested about is this...

He added that Internode intended to "significantly increase download quotas" with the launch of PPC-1 on October 8.

Enjoy...

hope so, if they do others will be forced to match. I just chose iinet over internode, but if internode do so I could very well switch since I only did a monthly contract.

I'd change to Internode in a heartbeat if their quotas were as good as TPG. Here's hoping they do even better.

They probably wont. They don't believe in off-peak data (which is fine with me) and they offer far better international connectivity than TPG (which is why you pay more per GB.)

I'd expect my 55GB plan to go up to 70GB maybe (or maybe 65)

I chose Internode over iiNet because they didn't service Diamond Creek.

I was rapt with iiNet (before moving house) and I'm rapt with Internode. Both are great ISPs.

On Internode I like how you can login to their website and buy extra quota which is available in <10min. They must make a s***eload of cash from that I reckon.

Yea that is very handy, although I still haven't managed to hit my cap.

The plans came out, they're awesome if you're on an Agile exchange, terrible if not. The Telstra stuff is so expensive so they must really hate Optus to get rid of all the plans.

They grandfathered all the Ultra/Naked Ultra (Optus) plans (which I am on). I cannot believe that they cancelled their plans for a Coorparoo exchange.

Here they are

All Internode customers were sent this link today

Ok, so help me out. I currently have "HOME-NakedUltra-40" - it's a leased server (Optus). They told me when I signed up I couldn't get ADSL2+ Naked Extreme (or any 'Extreme' plan).

So now the NakedUltra plans have disappeared, what's the equiv? Can I get Extreme plans now? If I could, it looks to me that basically they have added 10GB to every plan, which is pretty decent.

that link was live yesterday; I still haven't been sent the email about it though. I found that URL sorta useless though. I just want to know what'll happen to my plan; will I get more bandwidth or not?

Ok, I've read a bit. This is my understanding.

You won't get anything automatically. You have to request a plan change.

NakedUltra is end of sale, they want you to move to NodeLine + EasyBroadband. EasyBroadband is 50GB ADSL1/ADSL2+ plan for $49.95 (! awesome on its own). NodeLine is $29.95 (! s***house). So for $80/mth on NodeLine and EasyBroadband you get 10GB extra than a NakedUltra-40 plan for the same price.

You're not wrong about it being talked up, none of the naked DSL plans are that attractive compared to my current iiNet plan.

how so, ticman? I reckon $69/mth for 35gb of naked goodness is pretty good

I'm paying $79.95/mth for 60gb and equivalent Internode (on pricing) is 50Gb.

Edit: can't find any more guff on their VoIP service but with iiNet it's unlimited local/national calls and other call rates are pretty decent.

They're putting a big emphasis on the fact that it's just for that one family-friendly plan (for people leaving Optus/Telstra):

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1240052#r2

I wouldn't be worried about it propagating to all the Naked plans.

The point here is simple: With more than 75% of the total retail market currently consisting of customers on up+down assessed plans (with BigPond, Optus, and several others), to date Internode has never had a fair comparison made between plans from those providers and our own.

Thats because, in the real world, customers compare plans like this:

"BigPond $xx for $yy Gb" vs "Internode $xx for $yy Gb"

Thats it; If we lose out on that initial comparison, we usually don't get a second look-in. But if our comparison is using the same units (up+down) as BigPond (and others), then we're being fairly compared on that basis.

makes perfect sense to me

lol. I know you're trolling but aren't the "cheap" high-end TPG plans split into peak/offpeak?

We were struggling to use our old TPG offpeak quota (140GB) as the speeds went s***house when offpeak kicked in. While we could pull 1MB/s consistently during the day, we were lucky to break 400kB/s during offpeak due to network congestion.

I can't say I've noticed network congestion on Internode ever - plus last month I pulled 150GB in unmetered traffic (on a 25GB plan). You get the quality of service you pay for :)

I've never had any problems using my 100+gb tpg quota
I've got a $1200 modem hooked up to it and the service is completely flawless

I *smash* my offpeak every month, its quite a simple combination of utorrent + scheduler and when I'm on peak its always fast, always reliable

you do get what you +pay for to an extent, I would never want to have to call the tpg helpdesk because they're useless without question, but I don't need them because my service works all the time

If you measure better by quota alone, yeah. But if you want game servers, support and awesome service reliability iiNet and Node have that s*** nailed, yo.

Amongst other changes to those tables:

The most popular plans, those operating at $49.95 for 10Gb, have been replaced by new plans with double the quota (20Gb at $49.95).

So the majority of customers have got access to a substantial quota boost (doubling quota meets my definition of 'substantial'...) available to them.

And Easy Broadband kicks up to 50Gb (with existing customers getting that upgrade automatically at rollover, for that specific plan only)

Changes have been made to various (but not all) other plans, bringing them into alignment with underlying costs and boosting quota where its been possible to boost it.

In some cases no change has been made because the underlying economics of the plan concerned have not made a change possible; These are not a general increase of 'x' Gb across the board. Thats because each active plan has been analysed and new plans provided where possible.

So basically there were no real quota increases for high use plans? Instead they took the cheese route and "doubled!" low use plans so they can claim "significant increases" to media sources.

I kinda feel a bit annoyed about the plan changes.

I was on 55GB for $90
I could either get... 50GB for $70 or 75GB for $100.

I chose the latter, but I'm pissed off I couldn't get anything at my current price point.

Why did you change at all then? You could have just kept going on what you had.

If you purchase data blocks from 'node in the back-end it costs $30 for 20GB so you still have a sweet deal.

Optus hosted services are EOL. Prices and quota have not changed.

Easy Broadband includes uploads, I don't think any other plans do.

hahahaa.

TPG's "best plan" is 120GB for $130.

For that, you get higher contention ratios, tech support in the Phillipines, and a network full of leechers.

Please stay away from Internode, I don't want people like you f***ing it up for me.

Data block pricing is "under review"... but I hit my quota fairly regularly at the moment... so I'd rather pay an initial $10 more for the extra 20GB than buy a data block every month and pay $30 for it.

You tell me... Considering the majority of TPG's users are on plans with large off peak data allowances...

Super Fast Standard /80GB - $49.99 - 80GB (40GB+40GB)
Super Fast Medium /100GB - $59.99 - 100GB(50GB+50GB)
Super Fast Heavy /150GB - $69.99 - 150GB(65GB+85GB)

What sort of internet users do you think they're going to attract?

Leechers.

I draw your attention to this article, written about Exetel.

Its common practice for ISP's to release good plans, gain a lot of business and then let their network go to s***, ruining it for the existing customers.

I don't want that happening to my beloved Internode. So I say again... Please stay away from Internode, I don't want people like you f***ing it up for me.

That is not 150GB.

Thats 65GB between 8am and 3am and 85GB between 3am and 8am. Compared to the internode plan which is 100GB anytime.

TPG's most expensive plan is 120GB anytime ($130).

Wow, way to completely neglect the plan with 65GB+85GB-offpeak for $80/month

Also, a few TPG peeps here are on the old 60GB+140GB-offpeak .

I don't get why Internode don't believe in offpeak. Personally, I much prefer higher overall quotas and don't mind having to schedule some larger downloads for the middle of the night for that privalage. Node don't even offer that choice.

Sure they win points for simplicity and I applaud them for that - it makes it easier for people to see what they're getting at face value. But for people that know enough to properly compare plans it really is bit fail.

I've been on TPG for the better part of this year and admit that I was hugely hesitant about signing up because of the bad rep they used to have. I really can't fault the connection though, it's every bit as solid as our old iinet link was and pings are fine.

I can't speak for how hammered it gets during offpeak period, because I'm never up at 4am browsing or playing online games.

Pinky: I'm in the exact position you're in (nakedultra-40, with no option to go for the extreme packages). Are there any of the new plans that we can sign up to that gets me extra value?

From what I gather, if I was a new customer, would node deny me service if i wanted to go with them? since they said they dont sell the ultra (optus) plans anymore. I want 10gig more :(

@CSIRAC: Nah, I think we are pretty much stuck atm. I won't be changing to NodeLine+EasyBroadband anytime soon because of the upload data being counted, and that's the only option we have.

I'm pretty happy with what I have to be honest. I could max out 40GB pretty easily but normally I probably only use 20-30GB. If I want something more it can always wait until next month. I guess I look at a lot less g4y pr0n and download less Linux ISOs than parabol and his household!

You know how it is, though - wait another 6 months and anything could happen in this industry.

I'm switching to iiNet from Bigpond. Yes I finally see the light, a convert and various other puns you want to use here :). Am waiting to see how easy it is to churn from Bigpond ADSL2+ to iiNet ? On the online form when I signed up it said there's a port available for ADSL2+ for iiNet so should they just be able to shurn me over from Bigpond, then I just call up Bigpond to cancel my account etc? Or how does it work ? Anyone can share their experience with me please, thanks :)

From my understanding you can't quick-churn between ADSL2+ providers, but I may be wrong. Best to give iiNet a call, tell them your situation and find out what the best way is. If you do it the wrong way, you may end up causing delays of a couple of weeks where you end up with no internet.
I can't speak for how hammered it gets during offpeak period, because I'm never up at 4am browsing or playing online games.

I wasn't up at 4am either. It was a case of waking up in the morning (e.g. 9am) and checking the download graph for the last few hours of scheduled downloads. Disappointing to find out the download didn't complete due to low-speeds/congestion (whereas during the day I'd have no problems getting 2-3x the speed on the same file - definitely not a slow download server!).

I don't get what your problem with TPG is, Mongie. I've been on TPG for 3 years, and the only connection issues I've experienced have been due to having s***ty network hardware. I agree with Dan, sure, it'd be nice to just have one big fat quota, but if I can double my quota and have some of it off-peak for the same price, I don't see the problem.

And besides, looking at Internode's plans, I can see 50GB for $70 per month. For the same price on TPG, you get 150GB. Sure, that's split between on-peak and off-peak, but the on-peak alone is still 15GB more than the Internode plan's total.

I'm aware that Internode includes unmetered content, which is awesome, but I doubt I'd be grabbing more than 100GB of unmetered content a month. And there's nothing wrong with the pings I get either.

From my understanding you can't quick-churn between ADSL2+ providers

I quick shurned out officel ADSL2+ from Internode to Optus last week.

The internet died, and 30 minutes later a man appeared with the new modem and installation details, and we put the net back on with the new name and pwd. Was kind of surreal.
