There's been plenty of 'What do you do for a living' type threads...

But I wonder how many of you, or people in general, are doing what you do because it is REALLY what you want to do, or if you feel what you really want is out of reach/too unrealistic/you're not capable of.

Do you feel stuck in what you're doing? Do you feel it's too late for a change, or too late to pursue what you always wanted to?

I had a petty argument with some douche at work a few weeks ago (it was actually quite amusing), and it just highlighted to me how much people seem to settle for something that they seem they have to... for whatever reason.

I'm 27 atm, and am now just pursuing, finally, what I've truly always wanted to do. s***s me that I felt like there was always a barrier, when there wasn't. Just f***ing do it.

Is what you're doing what you really want?

I actually (mostly) enjoy what I do, I'm too stupid to do anything that involves your mind so working with my hands works out well.

If I had my pick. I'd like my parents to give me a cushy job helping run old peoples homes with the contracts they accuried through their contacts in the government. This would give me all the time in the world to spend my days managing my vast stock portfolios while trolling around in QGL forums.

Research officer who gets to go overseas several times a year for conferences.

By the way bargain, you should really contribute to your own topic a bit more than "im doing what i always wanted to do".

Engineering position in a top line motor racing series. Currently doing well at heading in that direction as I am currently in Malaysia developing a racing car alongside some seriously experience ex F1 engineers.

Higher pay wouldn't go astray though :p
Wouldn't mind Being the Surveyor General for Queensland/Australia.

But as the famous movie goes, I would do nothing.

Well greazy, I've just finished my apprenticeship in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, but I'm now in the process of applying for a RAAF Pilots Course position. I've got interviews in just over a a weeks time, then hopefully off to flight screening.

Ideal job for me? F-35 Fighter Combat Instructor. Many, many years off, and much hard work, but achievable. I just need to make it so.

I guess for me there would be a dream job and a dream career.

Dream job would be a windsurfing instructor or pro-windsurfer, but that is no career and certainly not mentally stimulating.

Dream career is research in terahertz technology and that's where I am right now. While only a research assistant at the moment (doing my masters), I get to play with machines worth more than the average house. I have an awesome advisor, great research group and things are only getting more interesting. Apart from the latest microwave measurement equipment we have floating around, I believe we also have a scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope - not to mention a bunch of lasers with values in the 6 figures. Sure it's not easy being a poor uni student but money isn't everything - I value quality of life a whole lot more. I'll leave the rat race, mortgages and stress for everyone else :)

To be honest... I always kind of dreamed of being an actor. I was pretty good at it in high school, but I always realised the odds of making it are pretty pathetic so I never bothered.

Other than that, I want to be independently wealthy so I don't have to work.

ever since i was a kid i wanted to get into renewable energy.. now i'm in holland i'm thinking of starting a company which can package the hardware a sparky and state and regional rebates into a single package to get people into putting wind/solar generators on there roof

if all goes well holland will turn out like germany where the gov forces utilities to buy back all excess energy at a premium

its the way of the future baby

i also always wanted to be a Ships Captian however as situations change your goals need to change.. if your in a relationship its no good to spend months at sea

I enjoy what I do, work in Motorsport, currently doing the British f3 championship, however my goal in the next two years is f1, then first goal within f1 is a race engineer with a championship winning driver.

I enjoy bookkeeping and think it is an awesome job and would be happy to do it for the rest of my life. The organisational side of things and making sure all the figures match up is more than just data entry. Regardless - the world needs bookkeepers and I enjoy doing it. Win/Win I say!

I'd love to spend all my days reverse engineering malware. I do it for fun and bonus points at work since I can actually explain how half the malware out there actually works but getting paid to solely do that and not have to deal with customers would be a dream.

Nah this is to race in the Asian GT3 championship and Macau this year. The F1 situation is just coincidence, though a nice one since some of these guys might end up in that program.

Good luck with you, with all these new teams popping up it's the perfect time to push hard to work your way into F1!!!

Personally my idea of fun & entertainment does not include entering data off receipts & bank statements into a computer. Maybe if MYOB/Quickbooks made a less cumbersome way to enter s*** in it would be alright.

Nop, only the US I believe.

Get a few simple certifications and you can open carry pistol, taser, OC spray... then when the fugitive jumps bail you have the legal right to enter their house on the bail bond without a warrant to make a rearrest OR if you know they're inside a property (doesn't have to be the fugitives) you're allowed to enter without a warrant to make the rearrest.

You then get 10% of the bail amount for making the arrest.

Sounds :D

there is nothing wrong with conducting a sexual relationship with a 17yo under queensland law. this is lawful sexual activity.

as for the Education Queensland Code of Conduct, a sexual relationship is only a breach of the code if a professional relationship exists, or if the student attends a state school.

Hmm, im sure when i was in high school a mates dad was doing something similar. Tracking down cars / people for money. Maybe he was just a debt collector?

Anyway, i think im doing my ideal job. I love coding and solving problems. Just the company im working for has some people issues.

Other than that, I've been thinking about going back to uni and going pro at poker. I've cashed 10 out of the last 12 times I've been. My bank roll is getting very healthy now.

Yeah, something like that.

Bounty Hunters in the US can enter houses without warrants (something even police can't do), legally carry/use firearms/tasers/OC spray and they're allowed to make the rearrest on the fugitive.

All 100% legal, legit job.

Over here you can't carry a weapon (let alone have the authority to use it), you can't enter houses without warrants (looking at a bunch of criminal charges) and you can't arrest fugitives (only police), all 3 acts are illegal and will end up with you getting arrested by the police and put in jail.

The "idea" or the money?

I really enjoyed my ~6 months as a 1st year chef apprentice, the split shifts @ $5.50/hr though were absolutely brutal.

It's just not enough money to live.

Kat, I understand what you are saying, I like bookkeeping as well. I enjoyed managing my portfolio (now non-existent) which is a similar level of dryness. But there is something to be said about the satisfaction of manipulating numbers.

While I was doing my first degree I was a dishwasher in a cafe. I LOVED washing dishes in this environment. The head chef and other kitchen staff were a never-ending source of entertainment, and washing dishes in a commercial kitchen is a real challenge. You have to be so organised to keep everyone happy. It gives me shivers to think back to that time (10 years now) and how much I loved that job. It was my replacement for a weekend out since I worked every Friday and Saturday night and I had no complaints at all about not going out on the town. My night out on the town was Thursday.

Then i would secretly build an iron-man suit and beat the s*** out of people that piss me off.
