OSX has a great feature called Expose which shrinks all windows on your screen so they're all visible at once (for the legends that don't know about it).

So what's a good expose program for windows?

Do you mean like when you right click the task bar & hit tile horizontally/vertically? I've never used OSX so not really sure what you mean.

Similar to the tile horizontally but you can then click on any of the windows and it will return it to normal size and bring it into view.

Yeah I was just about to post that too, after I followed the google link to see what expose was. It doesn't show you the full window, more like slides but I've actually started using it a bit more lately after hating it at first. Seems like it'd be just as quick to click a button on the task bar if you want another window?

more like tired of using windows key + tab. It's easier to select a specific window with expose than alt tabing to it when you have 5+ windows open

While randomly pressing buttons I've also discovered you can press win+3 and it'll bring up that fancypants thing and leave it up without any buttons being pressed and you can scroll like f*** through 10000 open windows with your mouse wheel. I'm on vista, not sure if it's something I've somehow enabled or something enabled by default. Give it a go.

edit: ahh I just figured out what win+number does, it launches the corresponding item on your quicklaunch menu, I remember hearing about that in windows 7, didn't know it existed in vista too, I don't bother much with keyboard shortcuts.

It's a single exe file and a lot faster than that other one. I'm using about 80% CPU on something else and win+tab is fluid in its motion while that dexpose2 thing is choppy and this switcher thing is also fluid in motion.

I gave both of those suggested a try, as I was actually looking for something similar a little while ago but lost hope... But they seemed a bit too clunky for my liking. Although I just stumbled across this one which I'm really liking: http://www.codeplex.com/vdm

It also has the ability to drag windows to the other desktops which is the other feature I really enjoyed about the mac version.

You can just get a decent mouse then there are no clicks involved. My Logitech MX Revolution has a thumb scroll wheel on the side that performs the win+tab function just by rolling it forward or backward

sounds like too much effort, i just use the task bar.

but it would have a great "oooh, look everybody! i am multi-tasking like on the youtube video" effect.

I use the Ubuntu version a lot and it makes finding windows easier.. I also have about 15 different windows open at once (email, SSH, rdesktop, firefox, etc)

in win7 winkey + number loads the icon in that position (left to right) on your dock.

Vista does the same thing - it loads whatever is in the quicklaunch toolbar

maybe i'm missing something here but i've been able to do this always on Win XP by clicking the scroll wheel on my mouse. it's a pretty standard MS wireless optical.
or does this feature have something else?

Seetings on mouse "wheel button" are "Instant viewer"

Yeah that comes standard if you install intellipoint morton, I usually swap it back to "middle click" for games & auto scroll in firefox. Plus on my main PC I use a logitech mouse.

Something in 7 that I found out the other day - hit Windows Key and any of the arrows keys to move windows around. Can be useful to get windows side by side easily (code view & browser etc)

Expose is quite a big more than just some popup menu with the window captions and their icons... I have it setup so I flick up to the left corner and all my windows fly out into a loose grid, then I see instantly which window I want, click it and all flies back into with that window on top. WIn+Tab still requires you to do the right amount of tabs to get to the window you want and often you can overshoot the window you want and have to tab tab tab tab tab tab back to the start.

The new 7 taskbar is a lot better but comparing Alt/Win+Tab to Expose is like comparing juicy oranges with sour bananas.

Oh look, 3dee is here to proclaim Apple as the next coming.

Expose is a pretty cool idea, but I find the new Windows 7 Taskbar to be laid-out well enough that something like Expose wouldn't really save me any time.

To be fair, both Windows and Mac OS have alt+tab and they're pretty much the same. Windows 7 taskbar glass expose type thing is pretty cool and probably just as effective as Expose once you get use to it. Expose is the same deal. That being said, I wish I had Expose on my XP computer at work. Crappy XP window management is cumbersome.

What the hell does shift-insert and shift-delete do?

Shift-delete bypasses the Recycle Bin. It's how I delete everything. I think shift-insert is just like paste.

Everyone knows about alt + tab, but alt tabbing through several (ie 10+ windows) to get to the wanted window is a lot of work when compared to button + mouse click (Expose).

In Windows 7, the Windows Key + Left/Right/Up/Down I find handy from time to time. Alternative to dragging with your mouse. Works with dual screens too for moving windows between screens without using the mouse.

I mean docking the windows, like Windows+right arrow will dock the window on the right side of the screen. Left will do it on the left. Up maximizes and Down minimizes.

explaining what expose actually is, is waving an apple flag? Really need to get off your I-hate-apple high horse it's quite lame. How many other people have praised expose in this thread? Flame them for a while.

Yeah I have to say expose is nothing close to win+tab except for the fact its cross window switching. Its much more like the thumbnail stuff that comes up in windows 7 (cept it takes the full screen) when you hover on the taskbar, but you can activate it across all apps rather than just 1. As for Windows apps, I am not really sure, but not sure how well it would actually work in day 2 day in the Win interface (although 7 it would be okay).
