Topic: What new phone should I get?

I lost my phone last week. I loved it and would have been happy to keep using it for another 4 years, but it is gone. I have accepted that.
My ipod touch was also stolen about 2 months ago.

My question is this:
What new phone should I get?

I am inherently lazy, so while I realise I could research this myself, I also realise you all love having opinions on things, and occasionally those opinions are also worth something.

Previously I have been against combining my media device with my phone device, but since I've lost both, I figure I might as well give in, considering all phones seem to do both these days anyway.

What I would want in this all-in-one magical device is:
Phone (sms, calls, alarm, those basics)
mp3 (any particular differences here that I should be aware of between phones?)
Ability to read books (preferably stanza cause its AWESOME)
LONG BATTERY LIFE
I guess internet search would be handy too - so ease of internet browser use - preferably NOT IE
I also enjoy shiny things - I probably wouldn't buy the perfect device if it looks like a horses ass.

I'm not very opposed to the iPhone trend, except that I hate jumping on bandwagons that are years old. I am highly intrigued by the nokia N900 which is supposed to come out soon, however the bf is obsessed with having one, and I'm not the 'matching-couple' type.

iPhone fits all those categories. Just because something is popular it doesn't mean it's a bandwagon. Sure, plenty of people might own one because they thought it was fashionable at some point, but most of us just chose it because it was the best option (many of us in spite of our loathe for Apple's business practises).

Shame hero is so damn slow, was really looking forward to it. Think the Cliq is the next potential "a good android device".

iPhone clearly the best phone for what you want (except for battery). Android is getting closer, but not as polished and battery life is very average. Nokia have some nice devices coming out, but they aren't out yet, and Nokia seems to a constant disappointment lately.

Hero is apparently much better with new firmware.

I will try and confirm with my mate who has one.

Latest firmware for the Hero apparently fixes the sluggishness. I haven't used one myself though, so I don't know for sure. And yeah, the Cliq looks hella awesome.

iPhone fits 'long battery life'? I thought you had to charge it daily?

For all those saying X android phone runs sluggish, it will all be in the firmware, not the hardware, as all the android phones are coming out with exactly the same physical specs. Only difference is the G1 (and the vodafone Magic) had 192meg of ram instead of the 256 standard.

I charge my iphone once or twice a week and use it often, not sure what the tears are flowing about. Also just have a charger next to your bed and download the nightstand app.

My next phone will be HTC something-or-other. It's going to be tough migrating away from the Sony Ericsson W880i which is small and light and has an awesome screen (can read it perfectly in bright sunlight).

Hey sparrow, how do you go with the book reading? Do you find it hard on your eyes?

im used to plugging mine in every night when i sleep anyway, regardless of whether or not it actually needs charging - it usually lasts about 3 days without a charge on mild use (a few calls each day, regular email reading via wifi & 3g + a few sms)

iPhone batteries life is fine people just expected too much when they're using for internet, emails, games, music and f*** knows what. I don't understand why you expected it last for ages if you're using for all that stuff.... if you're a fairly light user it should last.

Reckon. Mine would last more than a week if just idling. Playing full 3D games though, you won't get more than a few hours - but you wouldn't get that on a PSP either.

I'm pretty sure my housemate said that since OS 3.0 came out, he only gets about a day out of his iPhone charge, that's with daily net browsing and the use of some apps. I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong though.

Are the touch screens on these phones anything like the one on the iPhone? ie. heat sensoring not old school push the screen down type fashion?

I don't think I could go back after using the iPhone touchscreen.

Just found this Australian site that's selling the HTC Hero for $630 AUD.

http://www.einfotech.com.au/shop/product_info.php?products_id=6988

My missus is probably going to be ordering one in the next week or so. Everything I've read about the recent firmware update for it has said that the performance increase is nothing short of amazing. Everything is perfectly smooth, not a dropped frame in sight. Very comforting news for anyone looking at getting one.

Hey sparrow, how do you go with the book reading? Do you find it hard on your eyes?

It actually doesn't bother me at all anymore, reading on a small screen (both the touch and now a borrowed ipaq). At the start of last year I couldn't even handle reading articles for uni on my computer screen, but thesis changed that, and now I actually find reading proper books kind of a hassel!

I currently have a phone like that that cost me 4 pounds. It's great, but it doesn't let me read my books, so your suggestion has been duly noted and ignored.

As for the rest of you, while I appreciate the responses, you're really just rehashing old arguments or opinions about HTC, iPhones and android. Noone has really said why I should get one over the other.
Also teq, I could be gay.

I'd recommend an android phone. I got the HTC Dream, while the battery life isn't exactly huge, the phone runs just awesome. I generally have 2-5 apps running at the same time without any lag and since the latest firmware update the phones been running a lot smoother.

The only real drawback from the Android phones, is that we don't have paid apps yet. But apprently Google are working on releasing them here soon.

The Android platform is also really awesome if you use a lot of gmail and other google products.

Yep, it's pretty much like that. Off charge in the morning, ~30% in the evening.
