Just looking to purchase a good 17" LCD monitor for portable lan usage, any suggestions for picking up one in Brisbane? A sleep deprived google search couldn't find a 2ms 17"'er, but they may be out there... |

I'm right thanks Zy, mainly getting it for the portable use of it, then it will probably be a clone for the TV in the lounge room PC
Thanks though :) |

I know there is some BS about LCD latency timings, some mention the times are white to black while the others are white to grey (or something like that) to keep their numbers down, when really they are performing poorly. |

Only other option is maybe finding a secondhand one somehow.another option is just moving on let go of the emotional attachment to the idea that it makes a difference serious suggestion! |

Like I said its not going to be like the monitor / lounge room TV for the next 6+ years etc so Im not too bothered, I was just curious. If I can get a small one for 2ms, great, if not, I'll live.

1)people who claim hot water burns their (instant) coffee and they need milk added first I'll agree with you on 1 and 3, but mp3s and cds sound incredibly different on almost any sound system. Some songs you wont notice the difference, but others it is VERY obvious. The LCD response debate all depends on whether your talking colour-colour or grey to grey response time. If the 5ms/2ms is grey to grey refresh time, the actual colour pixel refresh time of the 5ms might be 16ms or 20ms (ie, 50-60fps). That would definitely be noticeable. edit: by mp3's, im going to assume we're talking 128kbit/s ones.. i assume that the 320kbit/s ones would be better. last edited by Strik3r at 11:16:17 17/Sep/09 |

Do 2ms 17" LCD Monitors Exist? Define "2ms". If you're trying to be an enthusiast and pretending to actually notice the difference in response time, it seems fairly silly that you don't really care about the details? Almost all monitors that claim "2ms" are actually referring to G2G transitions. They are roughly equivalent to LCDs that generically claim "Response Time: 5 ms". So buying a typical low-end 2ms LCD over a 5ms one probably won't actually make any difference since it's the same performance, just one manufacturer chose to publish the lower figure to make their LCD look better on paper. Hell even the same manufacturer will switch from generic "Response Time" to "G2G" between models, depending on who they are trying to target (and fool) with each model. In addition, is the G2G figure an average of all grey transitions or did they cherry-pick the best transition? It'd be difficult justifying one monitor over another without that sort of information, since the manufacturers specs are deliberately dodgy. last edited by parabol at 11:18:33 17/Sep/09 |

it ain't worth arguing with 'em strik3r... coz people like that never bother to actually test thier beliefs coz what they actuall mean is this :-
1) i don't want to change how i make my coffee. 2) i want to be able to tell everyone that my sound system is the shiznits but it's obviously crap coz mp3s n cds sound the same. 3) my sense of taste has matured. 4) my eyes are losing thier speed of focus. :D |

2ms G2G, like I said in the previous thread where everyone emo'd up for their response time opinions, I clearly stated that I tested a 27" monitor that had 5ms G2G while playing Quake Live & said it was good, But I could see a tiny bit of ghosting & a minute feeling of input lag. That is fact for me.
If you don't notice the delay, then good for you. I do. I'm not trying to be some "enthusiast and pretending". Like I said, it's very minute, but its still noticeable. & I had the luxury of purchasing products that didn't have this delay, thus I chose them. All I wanted to know if a portable 17" LCD monitor that came in these response times existed, as product searches on Brisbane Hardware sites & google searches failed me for 5 min while falling asleep last night. |

It takes people 230ms to 450ms to begin to react to the appearance of an image. That just some perspective on the sorts of intervals that are normal to the eye. I think you might be bulls***ting about being bothered by the difference between 2ms and 5ms.
I have been a timekeeper in professional swimming competitions - even when they have electronic timers, there are still two timekeepers with stopwatches per lane. It was normal for the timekeepers' records to be several tenths of a second out from each other. |

maybe it was the ghosting effect I noticed, the bigger thing for me was the input lag.

Go and look at any old LCD panel and try and watch tennis or footy on it. Watch the trails that the ball leaves behind. Then tell me you cant notice 24ms or whatever they were rated to.

Whilst not being 17" have you looked at the Samsung 2233rz? 22" 120hz 2ms monitor, currently going for about $500
Easily the best "FPS" LCD monitor available. |

Viewsonic are coming out with an 120hz LCD as well which may go for a bit cheaper. 120hz lcd would be leet but not for 500-600 bucks.
