Topic: Recommend me a 24-bit LCD (24")

After having done a lot of graphic design and web development lately, its become apparent I need a better monitor. Current one is an LG 22" which is a mediocre 18-bit TN panel and I need something that will display full 24-bit natively and also be better for doing CMYK stuff. and a few more pixels wouldnt go astray too :D

I don't want to spend too much (for the kind of monitor I want) so anyone have any recommendations for 24" monitors for semi-frequent graphic design etc?

Atomic Magazine

Check out that link dudette. They did a nice test of some 24" monitors that might help ya out.

f***, that link is to an older 22" review. They did a 24" one in the August edition which was pretty cool. Sorry.

Looks pretty good Eds, though I can't find any results on Google. Is it absolutely brand spanking new model?

I was looking for a couple of non tn pannel monitors myself, ended up picking up some old 20" cina displays for 150 each. You could always just get a second hand ezio off someone. Saw a couple of lacie 24"'s on greys about 6 weeks ago which where pretty cheap for what they are

Definitely go Dell IMO. The graphics guys at my work use them and they're awesome. Plus their service is good too.

Dell for sure, I still have my 2407 going strong and it's still better than any other new 24" lcd I've seen since.

I've had my a dell 24" for over 3 years. The screen stopped working just before the 3 year warranty ran out and it only took 3 days to replace...

Took a few months to convince them that I actually ordered the monitor from dell though. They are like "whats the service tag?" This monitor doesn't have a service tag sigh. After many phone calls and frustration I got one of India's finest on the other end of the line and he finally found my order details after asking for my mobile phone number.

Anyway good monitor and turn around time but if you lose your proof of purchase receipt make sure you give them every detail you can think of if they don't believe you.

Isn't that how pretty much every retail business operates though?

Dell keeps all orders on their side but for some reason when I gave them my name they didn't have a record until I gave them my mobile phone number? Not the only thing I have ordered from dell either.

I've got a 2407, its good, great monitor for the price, but the colours really don't get close to my cinema display. If your not too worried about colours, then yeah Dell is great, but yeah, I'd say cinema display or higher if your doing pro GD stuff (this being said the only reason I notice is cause I have them set up as dual montiors).

I have a 2408 myself at the moment, considering the 2410 or an apple display for photo editing soon.
Undecided yet.

The biggest thing I dont like about my 2408 is that the anti glare coating seems to give a shimmering effect, expecially bad on white but in photos and what not if you look closely.

I am hoping the 2410 has fixed that. I would love a 30" display but the jump is soo much money.

HP LP2475w is supposed to be the best 24" on the market at the moment (except for their 30bit tri-colour LED backlight model - but its nearly $5K). Beats Dell hands down in all the reviews.

Yeah I think a Dell is the go. That U2401 looks quite nice (110% colour gamut, high contrast and most of all true 24-bit panel). The main thing is that I want something under a grand. The Applle Cinema Displays are very expensive (for what I want).

pfft. i got a dell 24" at work.. dunno what model... but it's crap. contrast ratio is weak... very hard to tell close pastel colours apart. it's only just over a year old n the colours seem very faded. i just got a new lg l246whx a few months ago & it's colour & contrast is so much better than the dell. coz i run them both side by side it's really obvious that the dell has a more faded look about it.

it probably is a s***ty model dell tho... cant see a model # on it anywhere.

I'm not sold on the whole Dell thing either.

I'm far from any expert but I use a Dell 20" wide (only a few months old) and a 17" Acer (I suspect a few years old) and the Acer has the better picture.

The Dell isn't bad but when it's beside the Acer it's colours etc aren't as good.

This may not really apply to their more expensive models though, I suspect mine is a more budget office model.

Dell uses several different panels between their models and sizes also. So if your 20" is crap (which I would definatly believe if its the cheap one) it doesnt meant the 24" is s*** (I have one of these as well, so I dont believe it :D)

yeh dell have 2-3 versions in each or most of their sizes, I know there's at least 2 in 24", one cheap and doesn't look so great and the 2408WFP which does look good imo. the cheapy is about $300-$400 and the ultrasharp/2408WFP is about $635-$800 depending on whether they have a special running or not. the rrp in the website is often even dearer

The difference between TN panels and decent IPS panels is quite significant so I'd say yours would consumer TN panel models if they don't look that great. My LG 22" is a TN and its looks pretty poor really. It has a shimmer effect when display moving or changing gradients between frames, its strange. The other thing is that it does dithering to make is s***ty 18-bit 256K colour panel look "like" 24-bit, but it doesn't come close...

Oh man there's a 27" IPS panel that is around the same quality as the U2410 for $1050. DOES WANT
