Playstation store has been chewing up a fair bit of my peak data usage - with downloading demos and the like.
Would like to have it download in off peak times. You can tell the playstation to turn off automatically when it has finished downloading but you can't tell it to start at a specific time. What i was thinking is using some of the access restriction stuff on my linksys wag54g to deny the playstation store between 7am and midnight (peak). The access restriction currently just blocks lan access completely. Anyone know what ports/ips i can block to just stop it from downloading the files? Ideally it'd be nice if you could still connect to the store/play games etc but just the files wouldn't download. I tried looking at the linksys logs whilst downloading a demo but there was nothing there and the wag doesn't support dd-wrt so tcpdump isn't an option. |

Turn it off during peak hours and on during off-peak hours?

Yeah obviously thats an option. Except i'd prefer to not have to stay up till midnight just to start some downloads if i can do it automagically!

You could use a timer adaptor thingy that people use to turn lights on and off automatically when they go on holiday. Not exactly high tech, but it'd work. That's assuming it won't be downloading while you're playing something else, of course.

Yeah i'm thinking i'll turn the access restriction on before i go to bed and leave the ps3 on. That way it won't download until after midnight and it has net access.
Was hoping for specific ports or ips i could block so that i could play games and not have it download. |

Don't know if it's at all feasible, short of hiring some cheap labour to rock up to your house and kick it off at midnight :P
Even if you could block the specific ports or servers, I'd imagine the download process would just time out reasonably quickly then spit an error on the PS3 - not continually retry like a PC app could be configured to do. I could be wrong though. |

Yeah you're right dan. Looks like the url for downloading is zeus.dl.playstation.net if i block that i get download error. If i unblock it it never retries. So that option won't work. Interestingly enough if i completely block net access to the playstation and then unblock it it starts downloading. I think thats because i've setup playstation network to auto sign-in and it does keep checking and then auto downloads. So the solution seems that i'll just have the downloads paused whilst i'm playing then turn the blocking on when i go to bed. |
