I hate everything apple with a passion but the iphone is simply the superior phone in all aspects right now. It's not even opinion.. just fact.

Maybe you should list what you want to do with the phone, if its just calling then any cheapo nokia, but I assume you want more than just that.

Its not like iPhones are expensive though, the RRP is the same as other smartphones and the cost under a post-paid plan is quite reasonable

Yeah but he has to hate iPhones to stay on the hate bandwagon :P

But seriously, everything you listed? iPhone at the moment. May change but right now, it is reliable, good functionality and practical, considering your N97, HTC and other phones in the same catagory are the same price if not more expensive.

i have dropped my 6110 nav so many times and my staffy even chewed on it for a while put a big ass dint in the aluminium on the back and it still to this day serves me perfectly. The only problem i ever had was when i was getting a massage and the chick put her knee on the sucker and cracked the screen, cost me an extra pineapple but what can you do. An iphone is simply not durable enough to outlast the perils my phone must encounter on a day to day basis and aside to this the touch screen is a real turn off.

Granted, its not like every other touch screen. Apple patented the s*** out of it cause its actually decent. But the glass screen prolly won't be ideal.

They're not that weak. I've dropped mine a few times from about half a metre (obviously not that high) and it just scratched a little bit on the corner or something. They're solid phones, but glass is glass.

It's not like you can get an iphone even if you wanted one anyway. I've been looking for one for weeks now. I've tried 3, Optus and in desperation even telstra and been told every time that they are sold out.

I've thrown my v3 at the wall numerous times, bounced it off the car window causing the battery to go in one direction and the phone in the other, dropped it on the floor, the screen has never broken, there's a dent in the body but it still works. The only problem with it is the interface is s*** and the speaker is full of steel filings. Phone seems indestructible after the insane beatings I've given it. I threw it at the car passenger front window so hard the phone bounced off & landed behind my seat, bastard still works.

Yes, I am trying to kill it.

I really doubt an iPhone would withstand an accidental drop on to a hard floor let alone the abuse my s***ty motorola has. My phone has internet, email, txt, mms, crappy camera (but seriously if you want a camera buy a f***ing camera not a phone) and short video recording. It even makes phone calls on occasion.

I always used nokia but got the 3gs after using a 3G at an apple store. Quite a slick interface and does all I need. 32GB for 100 euros was hard to pass up on a two year 30 euro contract. 150 minutes worth of calls and unlimited Internet. Nokia's are so crappy compared to it I even hated getting an iphone myself.

If you're scared about dropping it why dont you get a neck carry pouch for it and a helmet in case you fall over and crack your skull. Wouldn't help to wear some nappies as well in case you poop yourself when it falls.

But seriously, I've broken 2 nokia phones when they fell on the ground, keyboard cracked inside. It was a 6610 and a n80. These are small consumer electronics, theyre designed to withstand some abuse but theyre not indestructible. The iphone seems much sturdier than the nokias but I dont really want to be finding out if it breaks and if it does I'll suck it up for being a clumsy f***.

man I have dropped my bloody iphone so many times, and the amount of times I put it in the pcoket with the car keys and forget, and I had 1 scratch on it....that was from sliding on a sidewalk.

I dont know where this 1 drop and its toast s*** comes from hey.

As for no stock, it is true there is an international shortage at the moment, but I ordered some for work and one for my GF (telstra and 3) and they all showed up within 2 weeks. Just have too be patient :)

the n97 is working well for me. camera is amazing, great interface for autouploading media. i haven't tried the music player at all yet. even better their price has come down dramatically on ebay.

email is good but doesn't do submailboxes. the mail for exchange free software works great for exchange servers syncing everything.

you can get one for free on a 79 cap plan (unlimited text) through optus. will cost you roughly 800 on ebay.

I tried the keypad on those (E71) and I couldn't help but press about 4 buttons at once. I don't have big fingers too. I think the E51 and 71 have the same style of buttons.

I've got a nokia n96, I am pretty anti-iphone/pod. However I am starting to get SICK TO DEATH of it. The music player f***s it self every now and then, and i have to pause / restart (the little remote died within like 1.5 months gg nokia designing a plug that sticks straight out when it's going to be in a pocket etc). It's SLOW AS f***, the 3G is random at times as well.

Apparently the 30.xxxx firmware fixes all my problems - and more! But noooo Vodafone can't be f***ed upgrading their version of the firmware past 12.018!

In short, don't get a nokia on a plan - buy it outright and make sure it's not branded.

Now I have to work out how to hack my phone, without getting my internet cut off.....which is a pain, and i bet theres no such problems with Iphones.

How about a blackberry bold then? They're pretty sturdy and got great keyboard. I doubt you'll like new HTC android/winmo that's coming out because they'll all be touch screen, except for HTC Snap/Touch pro 2 but touch pro 2 heavy and expensive as f***. If you don't mind winmo then HTC Snap might be a winner, it's sort of like a blackberry style phone with full QWERTY.

That's what I said, but i called them up to complain about the software and they knew nothing about when the new version was going to come out (they said to connect and update and I told them I already had).

So I suggested they let me take it down to Nokia and get them to put generic operating system on it, and they said that's fine, but they'd have to block my internet?! Probably due to some settings crap. After spending 30 minutes on the phone with them to get to this point, I told them thanks for nothing and have now decided to hack.

The HTC Dream is sweet. I love mine. Does everything I want and more. The only s*** thing about it is the camera, but I seldom use it anyway. It syncs with your google account. So gmail, googlecalender, youtubes, etc.

It's also fast. I've generally got 3-5 apps running at once and it never slows down.

I've got a HTC Touch HD for the same reason as OP. Works really well, installed quite a few apps, and will probably flash it with winmo 6.5 when it's officially released and cooked by the XDA developers.

Bonuses -
interchangeable microsdhc cards (hotswappable, but you have to take the backplate off)
User replaceable battery
Not dependant on the "App Store" pfft
Cookable Roms

I was also seriously considering Android as well. HTC are coming out with some really nice flavours of Android

Sorta. You have to login/sign up to a gmail (google acc) when you start the phone for the first time. Then all the programs like calender, gmail, etc sync with their respective google sites/apps.

I'm fairly confident that when Android gets a bit more attention it'll start stealing some market from apple. It's a great OS.

One major thing that has turned me off htc and iphone is the lack of ability to group your contacts (eg. send an sms to 'all my hoes' group).

anybody know if either of the phones now have that functionality? if not, i'll stick with a regular nokia

i'm waiting for the Sony Ericsson Satio

Thank you, sir, for finding my new phone. Either this or HTC something. Current is S-E W880i - love it, but under-featured by current standards.
(eg. send an sms to 'all my hoes' group).

I manage a group of 60 soccer players and use floAt's Mobile Agent for doing this. I wrote a macro in Excel to get SMSs from the player DB and delimit them with a semicolon (which is what FMA likes). Bought a $20 Bluetooth dongle. Never looked back. Use it from work and home, FMA has an 'auto detect' option so whenever the mobs is in range it's connected to my computer.

Not as good but nearly as good, since it's resistive it'll never be as sensitive as capacitative one - though HTC has done a great job with tweaking the sensitivity on their new handsets. The only thing that puts me off about the Touch pro 2 is that it's too heavy to be comfortable for day to day use. That and it's exxxxxxxxy. HTC Snap might be a winner if you want full QWERTY and nice and light Winmo phone.

I've had an E71 for about a year and think it is awesome. The first phone I have had that I have actually liked. Has all the crap in a phone they tell you that you need but never use. You wont have a problem with the buttons after a little getting used to unless you have the syndrome. Plus it looks good and every douche isn't rolling round with one like the iphone.

Buttons ftw.

The N97 was slow as hell for me, the feature set is great but symbian can go f*** itself. Nokia spends all this money on R & D for their phones and leave the software the same s***. They havnt caught up.

Omnia i900 if you're into customising things like your firmware. The standard s***ty widget bar makes the phone a piece of arse but if you dump on a clean custom firmware with pagepool then the phone is very fast. Especially since they integrate the latest model firmware for the hardware which increases both battery life and speed of the device.

Custom firmware runs windows mobile 5.

Omnia has a GPS receiver with ability to manually allow it to download the file which helps it search GPS's faster (updates weekly, finds 4-9 satelites in 10-30seconds when standing outside).
Omnia has standard things like wifi, bluetooth.
Omnia has 8 or 16gb standard internal memory with additional options to expand that with a micro sd card.
Omnia has a 5 megapixel camera which is fairly intelligent
Omnia has a screen which is roughly 82mm corner to corner

Thats about it really, I want to update with pictures of the layout of the UI for mine maybe you might like it, but i have to take a screenshot and upload it from my phone because i can't upload from the work PC's. Data security rules.

The touch screen is balls, the interface is awful because trying to use an app that was designed for a stylus is awful, the OS itself is clunky and slow as anything, even the girl in the 3 store couldnt believe how slow it was. The nokia is faster than it and thats saying something.

Im sure its great if you havnt used an iphone but I had and well, it was like going from a BMW to a mazda.

I use a iphone daily, i prefer the omnia with my custom firmware and better ui for being able to use more then one application at a time.

The default settings on that phone are s***, the start menu pulls down dropdowns where your fingernails have to be filed to points to press, the widget bar is slow and packed with s*** apps and the phone has nothing special about it.

Hence custom firmware:
http://mysamsungomnia.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/screen01.png?w=240&h=400http://mysamsungomnia.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/screen021.png?w=240&h=400
Thats just one of the many improved omnia interfaces. not the one i'm running, but you can see how at least starting an application isn't a matter of holding a stylus (which i threw away the day i got the phone).

What i'd compare this is more a Ferrari from 2009 is more the iPhone - and the Omnia is more a Ferrari from 1965 where you tweak it and it actually still has a soul. You can be proud and unique with it as the interface is what you want.

edit:
the touch screen is balls
Can't deny that the touch screen isn't good compared to the iphone, but its not balls compared to other touch screens.

the OS itself is clunky and slow as anything,
Its not clunky or slow. For example i went to see a car in the goldcoast yesterday. I got a call while i was running my GPS, i answered it on my headset and pulled over, they asked me a question so i alt tabbed to Opera and googled the answer for them, realised someone had msn'd me so i replied to them while i was pulled over on the phone with opera and gps in the background..

Of course with CFW you can add a 'pagepool' which is like your virtual memory page on windows. This plus removing all the s*** apps which are default on the system, plus removing windows6.1 and upgrading to 6.5 PLUS upgrading the omnia's hardware firmware to the latest firmware from samsung... etc etc.

Its not a phone to pick up and play and expect it to work like the iphone. I wouldnt suggest it unless you are a geek or a tinkerer. It suits people who overclock their PC wind up the boost on their car and play with linux in their spare time.

PS: you do know it has a finger mouse so you don't actually need the stylus, you can just move your finger over the black square to bring up the mouse pointer and select what you need..

Thats the problem, I did my tinkering with 4 different HTC devices. Im over tinkering, which is why i just want a phone that does what I want out of the box without the community having to make home brews so I can spend hours customizing it.

As for runing more than one app at a time? I dont really need too. I have a laptop and a PC for multitasking.

Im glad you enjoy it but for me stock it was completly retarded.

Apparently yes :) But the iPhone is closer for me personally.

I suppose if Jailbreaking got better (more stable and faster) it would almost be that way.

The "hours" is a bit of an exaggeration - it took me maybe an hour to read, download and install the prepackaged custom homebrew firmware which contained the latest hardware firmware and basic interface which i liked. Its as simple as looking for the screenshot of what you like, clicking that makers homebrew and on XP clicking the installer with your phone plugged in, turning your phone off and on again and the rest is automatic.
