I just saw this tonight at South Bank, and I really enjoyed it. It's really different to anything else I've seen, and wasn't what I was expecting. Anyone who's not sure if they should see this or not, I give you my recommendation. |

I give you my recommendationCan you please verify this recommendation with tickets. I'm keen to see it too. Just a quick recommendation of my own. If you ever get the chance to see Charles Bronson in what was originally called "Street Fighter" now seems to be published as "Hard Times", do so. One of the best films ever. last edited by Some Fat Bastard at 01:35:18 14/Aug/09 |

Yeah, I saw District 9 today too, brilliant movie, not what I was expecting either but it was for the better. I was expecting pretty standard sci-fi fare with a bit of a twist, but its presented really differently, and really intelligently and its just a very polished, engaging movie. And the guy who plays the main character does a f***ing awesome job, never seen him before, but yeah, he rocked it.

Yeah, that movie was great, it defied my expectations.
I was watching the first 45 min's of the movie not quite sure what was going on. Then all of a sudden, the movie kicks off and you left sitting there saying to yourself "Did I just see that? Other people saw that too, right?" Great movie, go see it. |

Yeah the start of the movie is pretty boring and like a south african version of the office, but boy does it suck you in and become f***ing awesome.

I hear we need more D-9 threads :D Yeah, I know we've had a bunch of them, but I reckon now that it's out, we need a post-viewing discussion thread. Spoiler: Did anyone else get reminded of Iron Man every time they showed Wickus' face inside of that powered armour? |

What the f***.
I just went to book a ticket for D-9 at Chermside megaplex and the standard tickets are now SIXTEEN dollars each. The VMAX are EIGHTEEN dollars a pop. Last time I went to VMAX (a few weeks ago), I got the ticket AND pop corn and a smoothie for 19 bucks (pretty s*** price anyway). Now its 28.90 for the same thing. And now its all called "Event Cinemas". f*** that s***. Am I missing some bizarre varying price thing? |

I would say that this is the best alien based movie i've seen since Aliens. Fan-f***ing-tastic. Starts off like an alien doco/episode of Cops, then the real movie kicks in and is just amazing.

if the d-9 director and children of men director got together, they could make a very nice half-life movie...also d-9 was like the office plus half-life...whoever reads this is the female Larry Bird

The lead is like a young De Niro... just goes to show acting is a load of BS when someone out of nowhere does the performance of the year.

He stumbled into the leading role as 'Neill Blomkamp' placed him on-camera during the short film. |

Saw District 9 this afternoon. I thought it was quite good, there were opportunities for a expected happy ending, then it changed, I like that.
I watched The Happening recently and the ending to that was atrocious. Although Zooey Deschanel definately makes up for that. Back to D9 though,I hope there's a sequel, they definately left it open for one. |

I hope they don't do a sequel, it would inevitably end up not being as good as the first one and if its just about the aliens coming back to f*** s*** up then it'll just be a generic Independance Day style sci-fi movie, and theres already plenty of those. Besides, I like how it ended, I like the ambiguity.

Awesome movie. Loved all the district stuff based on apartheid, down to the 'prawn' slur.
Sequel would be good cause even if it wasn't as good as this one it would still be better than 99% of the s*** that gets released. Spoiler: Would you root one of the prawns? How many beers would it take to get your motor running? |

So I saw this last night, thought it was extremely awesome. It reminded me very much of Starship Troopers, but with less suckiness.
For those who haven't yet seen it or plan to though, I'd just like to say two things. 1. There's shaky-cam and other stuff that might make you want to not have dinner right before seeing it. It's not a date movie, unless you like your date throwing up on you ;P 2. SSPLAAAAATT. That's all. 8.5/10 |

As a little side thing, I only thought about it afterwards, but am I the only one who took away from it the implication that Spoiler:
it was basically Jews doing to Aliens exactly what happened to them in WW2? (JHB has a 1.1% Jewish population - it's not stated but there's a few things that imply it). I know (well, I'm pretty sure) it's not trying to imply anything against them, but I'm wondering if that's how the undertone that was intended. Either way, when I thought about it after it was kinda like, "you know, now that I think about it... that was actually a lot like Spoiler: Anne Frank re-told". |

Spoiler:
the prawns were an analogy for the zimbabwean refuges. it's also sort of ironic that the blacks fought so long to remove apartheid and then quickly enough sides on it being re-instituted once the zimbabweans/prawns arrived. |

especially the whole Spoiler: prawns make prawn only weapons, they should have used that shockwave gun more than the lightning gun - would have been much more excitement. kinda made me sick with how many comparisons you can make to rl- it did make it a better movie because of that though |

Probably one of the most original and action packed Sci-Fi movies in yrs. However, I thought I'd better post a bit of warning to those who are yet to see it and aren't fans of shakey-cam. About 20-30mins into the movie I felt very nauseous from the 'shakey-cam' style. I was sitting in the middle of the cinema. Even some of the more pedestrian non-action scenes of the film looked like they were filmed by a drunken eppileptic monkey. Bit of shakey-cam is good in action scenes but having it throughout the whole film is excessive and ruins the enjoyment of unotherwise excellent movie. last edited by sLaps_Forehead at 23:03:18 26/Aug/09 |

The shaky-cam is nothing like Cloverfield. Its a little bit more on the shaky side but its not bad.

Sweet movie, I didn't think there was a lot of shaky camera movement going on at all. Perhaps I'm just use to it |

Saw it last night. I kinda enjoyed it.. did anyone else feel they could have done a bit more with it?
Spoiler: The first hour or so was really great... but once they had to go back and get the fluid, and it turned into a shoot 'em up action flick, I kinda lost interest a bit. Just felt they could have done something more 'epic' than the direction they took. |

I think the back story of the aliens will be further explored in the sequel, District 10.
Spoiler: There is absolutely no explanation as to why the aliens were all malnourished and why the command module was disconnected. The only thing I can think of that makes somewhat sense is that the Ship had run out of power (and power is used to make food and everything) and needed 20 or so years to recharge. Perhaps there ship was damaged on route to somewhere? |

No it did not need 20 years to "recharge". It took them 20 years to gather enough alien foreign material to make the fluid required to power the ship. They must have gathered many different types of ingredients which had been scattered around by the aliens once the ship became stranded.

south african accent is f***ing excellent. agreed, fooking excellent Not many south african accents in movies, probably because the cultural head spin would cause critics like Armond White to write things like "they talked like fags and their s*** was all retarded" |

The actor is actually South African... Well, yeah. I didn't mean it was a fake accent, just that your typical sci-fi flick isn't set in Johannesburg. :D |

PS Spoilers:
Hrm, i liked the movie as something different, i wouldn't rave about it though. Here's what I didn't like about it: The movie didn't know what it was. It wasn't sure if it was a fake docco, a political satirical piece or an action film. What it did well? It set a huge scene, filmed it in a "the office" kind of amusing and easily watchable way. The main character wasn't even really a character until the last 30 minutes, he was just the subject which was being followed by the camera crew. I really liked that, it brought to light some really disturbing situations. There were multiple "factions", regular humans, the gang, the government and the aliens. None of them seemed to be "right" or "wrong" each just having their own agenda. There was some clever entertainment just using my brian a tiny bit to consider the relevance of this situation to the actual situation in south africa. What it didn't do well? It decided in the last 1/3rd of the movie to have this weird conflict which needed a hero. To be fair, i wasn't sure if the main character was supposed to be the good guy, the bad guy or just some guy. The rival, that army dude, they made him out to be a bad guy for some reason. God knows why. It was like the people funding the movie said "wait this is too boring, you are supposed to be using our money to CG explosions and mecha's which look cool" and honestly it was unnecessary. The movie was fine without some kind of weird plot explaining how one man could help a alien because he had to. In real life, that hasn't happened. I didn't need to feel good when walking out. Overall I've got to say it was the best movie since batman, I was just a little confused about the end being so needlessly explosive, when everything else was so tense. |

You mean it had a beginning, a middle and an end don’t you. I don’t have a problem with the way the story progressed. It was way out there and worth the price of admission. Its goal of the production was obviously to be entertaining (leave the $ out of this). To me, it achieved the goal.

You mean it had a beginning, a middle and an end don’t you. Nope, I'm meaning the end was unrelated to the beginning or middle. I'm saying the plot went off on a tangent. Like the ran out of social issues to cover after an hour and a bit, and went onto some kind of unrelated "good vs evil" plot where neither side was right. It felt as if i had gone to a satirical documentary and walked out of die hard. |

I thought the story changed because the main guy finally cracked the s***s with his father-in-law and that army guy talking down to him. Plus he was turning into an alien, he made one explode in the test chamber, and he saw the experiments they were doing.
And yeah agreed - every movie has to have a bad guy that has no reason to really be a bad guy. Power tripping vendetta c***s for no reason. Also Inglourious Basterds and district-9 were f***ing awesome, lewd doesn't know what he is talking about. |

bit of a thread resurrect... but i thought this movie was worth it :D just saw it on the weekend & was very impressed with the originality of the story & the acting of the main character... 9/10 for me... fkn excellent! :D i'm of 2 minds regarding a possible (inevitable?) sequel... on one hand it would be awesome to see the prawns return with the upper echelon of aliens intact. on the other hand i rekn hollywood would f*** it up with their economic requirements for cliched roles.
totally loved the prawn weapons... best alien weapons evah. :D |

ctd, i was relaying a general opinion.
i havent seen basterds, i was just talking about the general excitement of district 9 amongst my peers, and the lack of kudos regarding mr tarantinos' effort. again, only on qgl do i hear good things about inglorious basterds. im sure its a good movie, tarantino has never let me down before, but im not hanging to see it still. and ive watched district 9 half a dozen times so far. |

and also that its essentialy 4 scenes that build up similary in a row. i may of heard wrong. |

again, only on qgl do i hear good things about inglorious basterds. You didn't hear anything brilliant from me about it; I thought it was the typical Tarantino steaming turd. It could have been an epic 2 hour long movie featuring Brad Pitt slaughtering Nazis and instead of was a stupid boring dumb pile of crap. |
