Max an industry standard for animation? surely you jest?

Midda is a 3D animator by profession, I'm a 3D Artist by profession, both for a video game studio. Neither of us use Max.

I know, and you have Max proficiency in your CV. If it's not part of your pipeline, that's great, more power to you, but you can't deny its a standard in the field. Maya et al were basically unheard of in game animation until recently and few game-dev diploma mills acknowledge much else either

3ds Max aint bad.. i wouldn't animate in it though, but i love modeling in it.... still i haven't really used anything else besides max for like 4 years so i really don't know how the others are atm.

Man the artists I worked with loved 3d max over XSI.

We never used Maya tho, I guess it was more cinematics and movies and s***.

I wouldnt know whats good and bad about them :D

Back in the day when I was doing gamedev stuff 3dsmax was basically the standard for modeling. That was back in the stone ages tho, but it still seems weird to write them off even now when you consider prolly a massive proportion of the games we've ever played were prolly made with it.

XSI isnt exactly new. Its been around for a long time and has even managed to be bought by autodesk already (that happened last year I believe)

Im also pretty sure a fair few studios have adapted too it and a lot have stuck it out with max.

isn't 1 of the main reasons a lot of people like max is simply because it's so easy to add your own s*** onto it or am i way off base on that 1.

Also i heard some XSI love over the years, wasn't hl2 made in it?
pARODY

XSI has been around for about 5 years, it was previously just called Softimage which had been around for about 8 years prior to the name change to XSI.

XSI and Maya only recently (like the last 2-3 years) got some decent subdivision tools for low poly work which 3DS Max was the prime tool. Previously they were nurbs/splines centric and were great for high detail character work. Now many of the major packages are good enough to do anything from low poly to high poly character animation and visual effects like particles and dynamic simulations.

fail troll is fail.

A standard in modelling perhaps but I think you'll find for 3D animators Maya is the standard. And yes I have used both Max and Maya which is why I lolled.

XSI I haven't tried but I've heard good things.

And lighten up, I prefer maya, I joke about this often at work to the teams that use max and back and forth, it's ford vs holden to us. That said, all of our teams use Maya for animations.

I made the switch from Max to Xsi back when version 4 was first released and haven't looked back. For work flow i find it leagues above max and around the same level as maya.

It's still new in the video game industry, but it's getting some good press.
Half life 2, metal gear solid, project gotham racing all used xsi.
Maya seems to be the real winner now days thoe as most studios i know that were using either max or xsi are switching to it.

Like Dancin already. Leave him alone, you chucklef***s.

The guy who does the modeling for the game I'm working on uses 3D Studio Max. We receive our animated models in .FBX format, which AFAIK most other apps suck at producing, so I guess he uses 3D Studio Max all the way down the production line. I'm not a 3D artist though, just a Autodesk fan who has done some GIS and 3D work in other Autodesk software (i.e. Map 3D/Civil 3D).

Dancin, take a chill pill, bro. I see where you're coming from, but there's no need to be so aggressive. Most people on this forum ARE chuckef***s though.

It is quite a conundrum, had I not posted initially, would you have followed up with your post deriding 3DS Max? and if you had not, would dancin still be so incensed into such rage to call us Chucklef***s?

But on the other hand I did post first, quite the chicken and the egg no?

1. chucklef***

A Wise Ass, usually standing in the opposite corner of a room, shoulders crossed, and chuckling constantly, only moving their shoulders and keeping their fat head still, as their New Orleans Saint's cap slips further and further from their head

Teddy Capous is a chucklef***...
