Topic: iexplore.exe process keeps running (vista)

Does anyone else have a problem with IE8 where if it gets started by another process it won't close iexplore.exe in the process list?

It doesn't cause any system instability, it's running from c:\program files\internet explorer so it's the real deal, sfc says there's no code irregularities in any system files and I can close it just fine using task manager and it doesn't prevent shutdowns.

It only seems to happen if something else starts it like if I click the button in MSN to check email and it launches IE. If I click on IE in the start menu and close it then it usually closes the process off as well.

Done a virus scan & avast/spybot says there's nothing found, it's a recent format & windows update is on and all updates/service packs are installed.

Running Vista32 Ultimate, IE8 with none of those stupid toolbars installed (yahoo, google, ask.com, etc). It's not causing any problems and there's no popups asking me to scan my pc using dodgyvirusprograms'r'us.com so I'm just wondering if anyone else has come across this before, most of the results on google seem to be for xp with service pack 2.

Before anyone says don't use IE, I don't. I use firefox & safari but some programs seem intent on starting IE to do stuff.

Kinda off the side and of no use to you what so ever but win 7 has finally fixed the issue of other programs not using your browser default. ie: clicking MSN to check your email. Only took them.. years.

CSIRAC: They've also fixed it in vista for most MS programs anyway. You can choose to make MSN use firefox, just that every time I tried to use firefox for some reaosn I could log into hotmail but my inbox and all the folders wouldn't show up and I cbf fixing it so I left it set to use IE because until now I'd never had any issues with it.

The weird thing is it doesn't happen all the time. Right after I posted this thread I tried a bunch of times to replicate the never ending ie process and couldn't.

- reference to swine flu +5 points.
- reference to squealing which is a reference to pigs +2 points.
- tying it all together with a mum joke +100 points.
