Anyone doing anything cool with this stuff?

Just a heads up that all Winplus gear at bunnings is $10
was at two different bunnings today and they both had it all marked down, must be clearing stuff out

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X10_(industry_standard)

X10 is an international and open industry standard for communication among electronic devices used for home automation, also known as domotics. It primarily uses power line wiring for signaling and control, where the signals involve brief radio frequency bursts representing digital information. A wireless radio based protocol transport is also defined.

X10 was developed in 1975 by Pico Electronics of Glenrothes, Scotland, in order to allow remote control of home devices and appliances. It was the first general purpose domotic network technology and remains the most widely available.[citation needed]

Although a number of higher bandwidth alternatives exist including KNX, INSTEON, BACnet, and LonWorks, X10 remains popular in the home environment with millions of units in use worldwide, and inexpensive availability of new components.

a normal single unit usually costs anywhere from $50 - $80
but they also have the kits and what not, which are $80-$160+ (starter kits)

and cameras etc, everything is $10 - I'd say they're not stocking it anymore and just want to get rid of it

I bought a few things, I got an alarm clock that will turn on the heater in the bathroom when it wakes me up
so by the time I've hit snooze once or twice, I can walk straight into my bathroom at the right temp

not bad for 20 bucks imo

my friends who done it can turn all the lights/aircon units in his house on/off using his iphone from anywhere in the world
open/close his garage door etc (again, from anywhere)

I'd like to open and start my car with my phone. Also if I could summon it via some sort of radio pilot thing that would seal the deal.

I've had this for years.

$30 Kambrook timer.
Clicks the coffee pot over so I wake up to the smell off coffee and in Winter (provided I remember to add coffee etc)

Other than that, it just controls the lights on my fish tank and when the lights are on, turns on the 8,000 litre per hour powerhead so my big fish can get some exercise.

Its pretty cool until you cant open the roller door because you I phone is flat and it is raining outside and the sprinklers a still on so you will get socked when you get out of the car. Then you get to the front door and cant remember the pin number to get in the house because you change it every two weeks. Then whilst breaking in the back window you cut yourself on some broken glass and set the alarm off which alerts the security company. The security person happens to be in the neighborhood. How long will it take to explain this to the police when they get there?

I looked at this s*** around 2000. I got a few catalogues but with a s*** pay and a rental I didn't buy anything. was keen on setting up a cctv setup with their products.

he still has the normal remote control for his garage, the other controller is an SMS based one

so he can send an SMS to a phone in his house and it tells the garage door to open/close

I've made a contextual sensor that works out if I wake up (as opposed to my wife) and if so it turns my computer on. She won't let me use it though, because she is worried that I could post naked pictures of her on the internet

Edit: Wow. I out-creeped myself, that post...
