I think Killing Floor is a fairly misunderstood game, so I figured I'd write up a micro review.

A friend of mine bought and downloaded it on Steam and fired it up. I knew nothing about it prior to this. First impressions? Like a combination of L4D Survival and Counter-strike (in regards to weapon purchases) on the Unreal engine, but .. "what a load of crap!".

Compared to the uber-polished L4D, it seemed like an amateur designed mod. My friend kept dying within 30 seconds, couldn't really kill much without being overwhelmed by mutants/zombies. Got frustrated and quit, then tried again later. Here's what we learned:

1. You really have to use the iron sights (COD-style)
2. Absolutely, positively do not let zombies within arm's reach like you can in L4D. You will die.
3. Aim for heads, they explode
4. Use the welder to close off zombie entry-points
5. Aim to level up your skills - you do/have way more damage/accuracy from Level 1 onwards.

Once we figured this out and played it for several hours, we found it a pretty good replacement for L4D (a game which I'm now bored with after playing it to death). In fact I haven't touched L4D since buying this - so much fun playing this Co-op with a housemate or 6-player on the net!

Pros:

+ very addictive once you work out the gameplay
+ increasingly difficult attack-waves promote strong Co-op teamplay
+ awesome metal music (first time I've turned up in-game music in ages)
+ skillset leveling ('Perks') are great to work towards
+ absolute mayhem and gibs when you have 100+ zombies charging you
+ good range of difficulty and game length options
+ weapon purchasing/selling is a great feature
+ multiple kills with strategic single shots

Cons:

- gameplay not easy to learn
- slow-mo can be a little annoying
- server browser somewhat annoying
- a few animation/sound bugs here and there
- too many ports to forward to host own internet game (ISP server and LAN games are no trouble)

Summary: Very fun game if you invest the time to learn it. If you treat it like L4D, you will HATE it - you can't play it the same way. For $27AU it's a freaking bargain and I'd be surprised if people didn't enjoy it after giving it a fair go. Loving this: 8/10.

(Just looked on Gamespot and made the observation that the reviews started out poor and after a few days the rating went up significantly as people played more)

Here are a couple of vids I recorded (limited to 30s by Fraps):

Nice work on the micro review Parabol.

I cant see this one making my shopping list however. I hate the cheese pop in avatar messages in games. Also, the gameplay didnt seem to deliver anything new so, meh, it wont be getting my bux.

Kinda interested in this game now that l4d is boring. It is SP only though right?

Nope, can do up to 6-player Co-op over LAN and Internet, that's when the fun begins. Would do SP to start off and get a feel for things. The videos I posted were from a random 2-player LAN game the other day.

Nice review parabol. Don't know how I missed it - only seeing this thread because of latest KF update news post by trog.

Those vids make you realise how good the L4D melee is. So unnatural to have to back off from a zombie while your avatar reloads!
