General Electric have unvieled a 500Gb 'micro-holographic disc' that is the same size as a DVD. Cop that blu-ray! ;p
A disc that can store 500 gigabytes of data, equivalent to 100 DVDs, has been unveiled by General Electric. Full Story... though there aren't much details. |

this will be an early draft iteration of the successor to blu-ray, just like blu-ray was to dvd, and dvd was to cd. It'll never end.

I'm kind of hoping that internet bandwidth will get to the point where everyone will stop buying games and movies on discs and just stream/download them anyway. f*** physical media.

Multi-layer Blu-rays (even ones readable with most current technology) approaching this capacity have been shown off for years... |

I'm kind of hoping that internet bandwidth will get to the point where everyone will stop buying games and movies on discs and just stream/download them anyway. f*** physical media. So you think it is safe to be storing all the worlds media physically on servers? People will still need to backup and store data. Especially businesses and the government. The need for physical disc storage/tape storage etc will continue on for quite some time. |

People will still need to backup and store data. Especially businesses and the government. The need for physical disc storage/tape storage etc will continue on for quite some time. I'm not talking about that, I'm just talking about the consumer side. Movies, games, music, etc. Obviously this sort of thing is still has important uses. I want to own a hard copy of an album, has more value, and you cant get the band to sign your digital copy.. Well, that sort of thing doesn't concern me. I'm not worried about the 'value' of my music, nor do I care about getting a band to sign it. I want it to be fast to acquire, and convenient to access. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that I (and apparently a lot of other people) are more than willing to do away with (what I see as) useless clutter. |
