Meanwhile, please accept our offer of an ex-demo HP-Compaq desktop with 2.8 Ghz P4 CPU and 512Mb RAM - plus a 40gig HD - for basically pocket change and whatever you find tucked into the couch cushions

Honestly by ex-demo I am going to guess they are ex-lease.

HP SFFs are nice enough, but be aware the PSU is not standard (and if it goes will cost almost as much as you paid for it) only accepts half height video cards, and the PSU won't be up to driving much anyways.

With out the model number you really can't tell how old it is.

only accepts half height video cards
Incorrect. They utilise riser cards so the expansion cards run parallel to the motherboard. See pic on site. But you're right, these most certainly aren't ex-demo. There's been 5 models of HP SFF Desktop since then (DC7100-DC7600-DC7700-DC7800-DC7900).
I can confirm that the DC7100s are good machines. They are about 4-4.5years old now, they finished making them in about December 05, when they switched to the DC7600s. Also, it's not a slimline CD-ROM drive, its normal size. IIRC there is a bay for another hard drive if you like.

We had a lot of trouble with these initially, power supply wise. The power supply connector is an odd design, having more similarity to the old AT power supply connector (remember those?) and were rather squished and this bent the wires out of the plug, causing the power light to flash red and a warranty call was needed. These were replaced with a lower height plug so they weren't so squished, and we never had a problem again. Other than that, never a problem.

it'd do as a media center or a home file server.. gawd I still have an old Celery 667 system sitting under the house for the same job :/

scrap the box and build it into a drawer in your TV cabinet if the video card height is an 'issue'..

nice find Spook

Damn, missed it by 20 minutes.
You snooze you lose!

Although today's cheap crap they're getting rid of is a 'Car All-in-One Ionizer and Air Purifier' that looks like a mini light saber.

wasnt actually that great a deal. Plenty of ex lease dell and HP around... I buy a lot of these units from a refurb outlet for customers that need a bit of tech refresh without the huge expense, I get HP P4 (not celeron), 1gb ram, 17" LCD, XP Pro for $189 inc GST.
