Topic: The Best Download Manager in the World?

We're constantly getting deluded with people who can't figure out how to download files from the Internet.

While this might sound like they're just newbs, the reality is a lot of time it's made quite complicated by poor software. Google Chrome, for example, can't download files greater than 2.1GB (really? aren't we in 2009?), a problem shared by lots of other software that can't deal with the sheer number of bytes that are in files that size. Some people are still running FAT32 so hit file size limits (the biggest file you can have on FAT32 is 4gb). Some download software won't correctly resume downloads for large files, or some won't prompt to resume by default and will overwrite your half-completed file, making you start again from scratch.

I wrote a tutorial for using WackGet with AusGamers which I still think is the easiest way to do it, but I'm wondering what download managers do you hardcore pros use to download files and do they obviate the problems I mentioned above?

(FWIW, I use wget)

Are you cereal?

I use chrome but rarely download large files so I've never come across this limitation. If that is true, then they have a problem on their hands.

I just use Opera. I'm pretty sure I've downloaded files over 4G with it, so I don't think it has any FAT32 style limits.

I use Firefox with FlashGot extension and then FlashGet Classic installed (it'll auto catch downloads from IE7 as well I think).

Sounds like a lot but I have never switched to DownloadThemAll or anything like that yet as I know how to use FlashGet decently (increasing/decreasing threads etc).

From what I've seen DownloadThemAll is alright, as long as you're using Firefox, or does it come stand alone as well?

I still swear by flashget (the classic version, not the one with torrent support) and the flashgot firefox add-on.

The thumbs down for downthemall is that if firefox crashes (for any reason, not even related to your large download) it takes your download with it. Separate application with a firefox control add-on ftw.

I've been using torrents to support/backup big downloads for ages because they're generally easy for people to use, plus they have the added advantage of being able to repair large files.

I don't like BitTorrent as a distribution mechanism (when there's a good HTTP alternative), but sadly most BT software appears better than a lot of regular HTTP software which, amazingly, still can't deal with large files (srsly, Google, what the f***).

We're constantly getting deluded with people who can't figure out how to download files from the Internet.
If by internet you mean ausgamers/bigpond/gamearena then I've found I can't download from any of them without turning off kerio. I can download from any other site on the internet with kerio (before it became sunbelt) running without any problems. If I try from those 3 I get a few kb into the file and the transfer stalls.

as for downloaders, I just downed a 4.2gb file from bigpond with opera, seems to have worked just fine.

Trog, are you sure about the 2.1GB file size limit in Google Chrome? I just searched for some info about it, and the first result was this thread. Didn't really find anything else. Admittedly, I only put about 45 seconds of effort into it, looking at the first two pages of results, but still, I'd have expected it to be well documented.

which thread?
look it's really easy to test - go to a site like bigpond files or any other site which has linux iso dvd's larger than 2gb and try to download one. you'll get an error and when you expand it, you'll see a webkit error explaining that the file was too large

Just tested Chrome beta 2.x and large file downloads work fine in that, so at least it should be fixed in the next release.

The Age of Conan trial client is 14GB , big files are just a natural progression of online distribution.

Just an honourable mention to jDownloader for automating free Rapidshare downloads and those kinds of places.

Who the f*** uses download managers anymore.. that's for dialup kids.

Anything big you just use utorrent at least that's what I use for all my linux distros.

I've got fibre to the node at 30mb/s in my new joint. Hauled down at over a meg a sec last night. Lovin it.

Lots of stuff still isn't distributed by torrents. Also, torrents suck for a pretty long list of reasons that I won't enumerate here, but they're non-optimal for large file distribution if you're trying to keep traffic localised.

Oh, I missed this. Well OS updates are a good example - service packs, patches, etc. iTunes doesn't come from a torrent. I'd say a signfiicant # of the Linux distros I mirror don't have a torrent up for the release still.

+1 aswell for jDownloader

so annoying when u get a download broken up into X peices, with this awesome program copy and paste all links into it, and let it handle it all, it even extracts the archive when finished!!!!

you know if you just let me download a file with 5 threads there would be no reason for flashget to spam retry, so why not just let me have 5 connections? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
