Topic: Questions for those that download files

1) When reading AusGamers news posts about new files (patches, demos, videos, etc), do you a) use the AusGamers download link we provide, or b) are you more likely to go to your ISPs gaming site and look for an unmetered mirror?

2) If the latter, would it be useful to you if we made ISP mirror links available on AusGamers file download pages (like, we'd have a list of Aussie ISP file mirrors at the bottom of the pages), or would you just do that yourself?

I use AG. I think most people would unless they have a low cap or torrent a heap of stuff monthly.

That sure would be useful Trog. Good idea.
I use GA for anything I can.

BTW, where is unmetered Xbox live content Telstra!

If I'm looking at an article which says "download the file here", I just follow that link. If that means Ausgamers, then yeah.
Optus doesn't provide free/unmetered bandwidth to anywhere, so it doesn't matter where I get my data from. And if it's really that large, I'll grab it over the nice pipe we have at work.
And for reasons of speed? Give a f*** if it take 30 minutes to leech.

When I was with BigPond I'd hop over to GameArena to find the file. The mob I'm with now don't have unmetered content, so AusGamers it is. But good idea nevertheless.

Instead of going to the trouble of finding the URLs just get AusGamers listed by all ISPs as unmetered! :)

didn't ausgamers used to have a link to the gamearena mirror?

or did i just imagine that..

I prefer torrents, probably because the ease of scheduling. I know there are applications out there that handle your downloads but I've always had trouble with them.

So to answer your questions, no I dont use AG links. Get some torrents up!

If over 150MB I usually go for my ISP's mirror usually. Otherwise I take the small quota hit for convenience (since I'm already there).
would it be useful to you if we made ISP mirror links available on AusGamers file download pages

For largish files, hell yeah.

I'm on borrowed internet.. so yeah i use whatever the providers file dump to get stuff... if only i was on iinet then i'd be able to get all the xbox stuff too but alas node isn't doing that yet :(

regex their hostname to match it with a list of isp mirrors = seemless linking?

then just have a hidden div which expands to reveal all mirrors if they want to see them

edit: oh right, the poll

iinet
1) yes
2) no, i have a huge cap and most patches/etc are pretty insignificant (.iso's are a different story)

I use Ausgamers because it is fast and usually has all the files in a reliably quick time.

Usually I'm in game first before visiting QGL and wondering where all the bloody servers are gone before I realise theres a patch out.

1)iinet. I use my ISP mirror wherever possible. Unless the file is a pissy size.

2)Would be handy I guess... Quite easy to find the link myself - someone on the forums usually links it anyway :P

I hardly ever download any game files because most games I play are on steam. Videos I use your streaming option which I really like.

Trog, I think the idea of trying to negotiate with ISPs to have ausgamers as free content would be easier than trying to link to the mirrors of all of the popular isp's

They'd generally be eager to limit their international traffic, and if you're still hosted by Soul, they probably peer with a lot of the big isps anyway.

1. I use Ausgamers for most stuff because of they are a decent speed and it's reliable. If it is a large download, >500mb's I'll use a mirror depending on my quota.

2. I'd use the mirror if it was an easily available option, on the same page as the Ausgamers download, also if the speed is comparable (which it usually is).

I'm with TPG and as far as I know they don't have unmetered gaming related files.
I use Ausgamers because it offers the best speeds.
Though I would like to see large files (over 1GB) have torrents setup. Even if I'm the only one downloading the file and there are no other seeders except the server, I'm still sucking roughly the same bandwidth from your servers.
Torrents offer that piece of mind that download managers sometimes screw up costing me valuable gigabytes.

ie. I downloaded a 4.66GB file from Ausgamers recently, and the download f***ed up at 90%. Flashget tried and failed to resume.
I was able to open the file and extract most of the data, but had to torrent the remaining files at a slow rate.

1) both .. if I'm at work then I don't care and will use AG. When I'm at home I'll first check the mirror and 99% of the time it won't have what I want and I'll use the AG link.

2) Yeah it'd be handy.

TPG doesn't have unmetered unfortunately which is they gayest thing about it. But I'm flat out burning my cap anyway so who cares. If there was unmetered it just means I could get more stuff during peak rather than waiting til early in the morning.

I try the iiNet mirrors (gamershell) and if I can't find it wait :)

If you could get iiNet to make Ausgamers free quota that would be sweet (ABC did it, easy pickings :p) as, or a mirror :)

What would be good is if the file wasnt on a certain mirror, you had a button to request it be hosted there.

f*** gamershell. stupid hostname for a start, but what really s***s mean is they re-compress files just to include their s***ty .url file. which can me 3 different extractions. unzip, self-extracting exe, then install.

1. I usually follow the link for some more info, and then go to nodes site to download it.
2. If there was a link to nodes mirror straight from ausgamers, that would be awesome!
3. <-- That's a three.

Too right ... it is a terrible site. But other than that it is tough to get hold of lots of game trailers, patches, etc quota free.

Edit: Apparently there's a 3FL download site we're able to use quota free, so I don't have to use Gamershell anymore ;)

1. (a) though I'm with Optus so if I was with an ISP that actually had a decent unmetered mirror I'd probably use that instead for anything bigger than 50-100 MB. (Optus doesn't have one, right?)

2. yes I think it's a great idea.

my net sucks at home, and as of last week it does at work too.

I'd be happier knowing there was a 'all in one' gaming site that gave me the shiz the way I wanted it.
