I read this a couple weeks ago but forgot to post about it; just saw it mentioned in an email newsletter I get and it reminded me about it:

The Register have a neat article looking at snipers and sniping:
It might be because there's another side to snipers and sniping after all. In particular, even though a sniper will often be personally responsible for huge numbers of deaths - body counts in the hundreds for an individual shooter are far from unheard of - as a class snipers kill relatively few people compared to the effects they achieve. Furthermore, when a sniper kills someone, it is almost always a person they meant to kill, not just someone standing around in the wrong place and time. These are not things that most branches of the military can say.

It is a little disgusting though not actually fighting just extinguishing peoples lives from a distance without giving them a chance. Campers.

The current distance sniping record is generally credited to Corporal Rob Furlong of the 3rd battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry sniper section. In 2002, working in support of US soldiers in Afghanistan's Shah-i-Kot Valley, Furlong hit and killed an al-Qaeda machine gunner at a range of 2,430m

The idea of .50cal rifles destroying engine blocks from range gives me a romantic explosion

I wonder if its physically possible to shoot down a plane with one of those

YOu could probably cause the pilots some problems at least. They get pissy about laser pointers.

Was Shooter that good? It and The Contractor seem to have just about the same plot (from watching the trailers).

Piss off, if they didn't want it in the game they'd have done something to stop it!

The weird thing was it made me want to shoot myself. I did try but then realised the world would be a better place without me and so I stopped myself.

Find the story behind that longest shot. Its awesome. He hit a target that was half exposed on the upper storeys of a building, and is only visible through a window. With wind speed and ambient temperatures quite high, he aims 75ft above the target and aligns with wind and fires. One shot, One kill. Fantastic skill.

apparently a .50 cal can go through 6 inches of concrete.

considering planes are made from alfoil and glue i can imagine it'd do some damage.

Shooting an Aeroplane with a rifle is easy.. hitting something vital is not. Turbofan engines are the easiest like what 747's use, but military aircraft armour plate their engines to stop casual fire getting to them.

That candian did the long range shot with a McMillan Tac50 not the barret, But he took 3 shots at his target.

At the moment in QLD you can buy a Steyr HS .460Cal Single Shot bolted long range system. How ever there under review and sales have halted for them for now. There basically a .50cal Cartridge necked down with the same projectile.

If i recall correctly, some anti-air guns use the same calibre rounds. So it's definately possible if you could hit the plane (or chopper).

apparently a .50 cal can go through 6 inches of concrete.
and this depends on distance and the angle of impact.

The Steyr is chambered in the .416 barrett cartridge which is the .50 BMG shortened 5/8's of an inch and necked down to .416 calibre. They use a monolithic projectile that is CNC machined for super accuracy.

Incorrect, the Steyr is chambered in .460 Steyr ($48 per round)the Barret M99 is available in .416 Barrett. These are totally patented by each other. Interesting Vid non the less.

As opposed to say.. being in front of it when its being fired which i'd imagine also feels like a kick to the head, stomach and groin all at once but with the added bonus of you ending up DEAD
